As I said in one of my recent blog posts, this is taking place in the same 'multiverse' as A New Equestria. It's expanding further on the chapter in ANE book 2 that focused on Sunset Shimmer, but going back all the way to a bit before Rainbow Dash approached her about helping to combat The Teacher.
Don't worry though, as I said, Chapter 1 will explain that in a bit more detail.
