Computers and Internet

"Hey, welcome back, how was work today?" Twilight says from across the room as her roommate friend entered the house, all cranky and angry.

"Not so good, too many orders in such a short time isn't good for me" He said as he hanged his damp jacket.

"Oh you're kidding, I know you can handle more than that, did something else happened?" She said walking closer to him, she got accustomed to care more about him since he was the only human she really knew.

"Nah, just a bit more rushed day, and I lost my phone in the way back" He said as he pointed behind him with a thumb.

"Well, look at it by the bright side"

"What? bright side? loosing a phone never have a bright side"

"Yes it does, you lost it and all the photos of me and my friends doing... rather wrong things, are gone, bright side!" She said smiling.

"Okay, maybe you're right, but my computer is still there upstairs, and those 'photos' are really drawings that were made in a computer by some other guy that were uploaded to internet"

"What's this internet thing you talk about all the time, where is it?" She asked curiously, wanting to know everything she could.

"Uhh, internet is like... what example can I give you?... Okay, imagine the internet as a cloud"

"Is it in the air?" The guy sighted, feeling like he was explaining a 5 year old how to use a toaster.

"No, imagine that this cloud have a lot of information in it, like... documents, profiles, photos, videos, anything you can imagine" He said spreading his arms to add some emphasis in the word 'imagine'.

"The internet have food in it?"

"Hmm... food photos, you see, internet can hold data, information, not physical things, and it can be sent to anybody that wants them, ok? you understand that?"

"I think so, oh no, the photos still exist? I know your phone haves it, but it still exists somewhere else, in that 'internet' cloud you say?" All he could do was laugh at his friend lack of information about how things work, feeling more than willing to teach her now about how it works.

"Heheh, Twi, you really need to know how things work around here in Earth, come here, I'll show you my computer"

"Yes!" She shouted happily clapping with her forehooves. They went upstairs to the guy's room, a bed, a closet, a clothes pile and a computer was all that was in there, he pointed at the computer and started giving an explanation of the basic things.

"You see, this is a computer, display, cpu, keyboard, mouse"

"I don't see any mouses here, what are you talking about?" He chuckled at this before continuing explaining.

"Nono, not the animal mouse, the mouse is a device to control the computer in some special ways, lemme start it up so you can see it's functions" He booted up the computer and it's fan started doing all kind of noises this old stuff really needs some cleaning, the guy tought.

"What's this giant box for? it's making weird noises!" Twilight said, squinting her eyes and patting it to see if it did something else.

"It's the cpu and it is the main part of a computer, don't touch those buttons please! you rebooted it, thanks" He said this last part with sarcasm, because Twilight had found the restart button in the cpu after so much touching.

"Sorry" She said with a sheepish smile.

"Okay, you see these little boxes, those are users, and see that arrow, the mouse drags this little arrow and when you 'click' it, you tell the computer to use that user, ok?" He said as he moved the mouse all around the desk, Twilight following the arrow in the screen like a cat that follows a laser dot.

"Hmm... how it works, this doesn't even have a connection to the screen, how does this, moves that?" She said pointing at the screen

"Ugh, it just does it, and all those icons in the 'desktop', wich is the main screen of an user, are programs you can use to do stuff, this one opens internet"

"So... this little icon contains internet wich is a cloud that contains information, that sounds just so not true" He stared at her for a moment before shooking his head and praying for his friend to understand how all of this worked.

"Okay, dump the 'cloud' idea, lets just say internet is in every computer, and if some computer changes something inside it, then it changes for everyone, no matter what"

"But, but... why, and how?" He was loosing his patience when the perfect idea ran through his mind to make Twilight understand all of this internet thing that was getting him dizzy.

"Internet is like a library, you can take a book, draw in it, and when someone takes that same book, he will see the draw in it, right?" Twilight's face brightened as she understood perfectly what that meant.

"Yes, now I'm starting to understand"

"Great, then let's continue!"

The hours passed as Twilight learned how almost every feature of the computer worked, software, hardware, and internet, searching and downloading every type of thing that crossed their searchs, until a virus showed up in the computer.

"What is that?" She said pointing at the display.

"That's a virus, don't think of it as a biological disease, but as a computer data modificator"

"And how it got here?"

"Through internet" He sighted because of the bad choice he made downloading all that stuff.

"This internet thing can really send a lot of stuff huh?" Twilight said.

"Yes, and that's why I try to not download many things from it"

"Why is this virus able to do that?"

"You really have a lot of questions, well it's because... I'll explain later ok, it's too deep for you right now, you just have to know they must be erradicated quicly or it can even grant power to someone else in another computer"

"I tought you told me other computers can just connect through internet, but not actually use each other" Twilight said tapping her chin.

"Yes, a normal one, but a virus can decode information in other computer and send it here as if I am using it, when I'm not even at home"

"Wow, internet is really a dangerous thing, but also helpful, and sometimes a waste of time" She said and yawned "Hey what time is it?"

"Hmm, midnight" He said without much concern.

"Midnight!" Twilight shouted, completely freaking out.

"Oh yes, another thing internet passively does is sticking you to the computer for a loong time, it's dangerous some times"

"Well then" she yawned "let's go to sleep" She said as she dropped into the guy's bed.

"Hey but...Oh-kay, g'night"

And they both fell asleep hoping to have a better tomorrow

Author's Note:
