Molotov cocktail for the win!
How the fuck did he make a good shield strap out of two daggers and cloth? The daggers should have instantly fallen out of the shield. That, and that strap would be very uncomfortable to use. As far as I can tell you've described it as a center-gripped shield without an emboss for the grip. He'd need a solid handle for the shield to be usable with any degree of functionality.
And he didn't grab a sidearm? All he has is a spear? Really? Spear and shield are great if you have a unit, but on your own it sucks major ass. The spear is unwieldy if you only have one arm to use it with, and you really only have one angle of attack that you can put force behind it with.

You're either a time-traveller from Ancient Greece or you're massively talking out of your ass about antiquated weaponry that you've never used. Just let the magical immortal berserker McGuyver up his weapons if he wants to. It's hardly the biggest problem this story could have.

"~And now to see your soul set free,
You need the witchs' cabin key,
Find the Lady of the Light,
Lost in the Night,
That's how you reshape Destiny...~"
Ah, 'Alan Wake' had good songs; and shadowy darkness creatures.
You know, I was never Celestia's biggest fan (even canon Celestia) but the further she keeps up these acts of douche-baggery the more I want to see Twilight see Celestia as she truly is.

I'm a SCAdian, thank you. Neither of your assertions are true. I have used such weapons. I routinely practice with a sword and center-emboss shield. I've used a six, seven, and nine foot spear.
I've fought against thousands, I've been in a shield wall, I've charged lines of pikemen.
I've faced Knights, dukes, and kings in single combat.
7614938
You have pretended to when LARPing. Very different.
7615387
A) The SCA is NOT a LARP group.
B)We teach and use techniques directly from manuals of the various medieval eras, only modified for safety if needed. (Though some techniques have been created by especially talented people such as His Grace Sir Edmund who personally reinvented the fighting style three times)
C) weighed pound for pound, our spears and polearms are about the same weight as their live steel counterparts, with a very similar weight distribution.
In otherwords, I have used something close enough to these weapons (and have handled and own the live steel counterparts, though I haven't fought with them). Thus I have a much better grasp of the effectiveness of these weapons than the average person.
Please, tell me your experiences and how well you've handled the various weaponry. In fact, I dare you to grasp a spear and shield and face me in single combat. I'll even forgo my own shield and use just a sword. Let's see how far you get.
7616297
Yes it is - and you know anything about how to use those weapons in the same way that people leafing through an Army manual 500 years from now and bopping each other with foam bayonets would be GIs.
Twelve months of conscripted service in the German military. We still had that when I was that age.
Oh, wait, you mean at swinging around replica versions of antiquated weaponry, don't you? Well, none in that case, I guess. I killed a deer with a Hirschfänger once, I suppose. That's a kind of ~two-foot-long dagger, by the way. It's kind of an outdated tool for hunting, but I knew this guy and... nevermind, you probably don't actually want to know.
Point is, playing around with wiffle bats, no matter how heavy they are, does not make you an expert on weapon use. It's not a real fight unless someone actually died from it. Just admit it and let it go.
7616297 Hot Damn. Glad to see you know what you're talking about.
I think the blood acted as some sort of binding material -like cement for concrete- or he jammed the dagger all the way in to the hilt.
Either way, I don't think he cares for comfort.
You might still be able to use a spear in close combat, but that seems to be more effective with two hands -meaning he would have to ditch the shield or try to keep his foes at range.
Also he technically has the daggers, but someone who's been in as many battles as he claims, would probably bring a secondary weapon (Like a sword).
~from a man who knows slightly more than nothing about spears and other various weapons
7616328
Really? So if you talk to, say, a participant in Japanese martial sword work, people who follow five hundred year old manuals, despite only ever using the methods on rice pads, would you tell them they don't know how to handle their weapon?
SCA Armored Combat is a registered martial activity, same as the aforementioned art. We have sword masters with such a degree of finesse and prowess with their weapons that history professors have studied their forms for a better understanding of the manuals.
I, myself, have practiced directly from the I-33, which is one of the oldest known sword manuals to date. I won't say that I am a master, nor anywhere near it yet, but I gaurantee you I have a far more intimate grasp on medieval weaponry then you do. And, judging from the descriptions the author has written, far more than the author too.
As for calling us a LARP, you may as well call all forms of martial art a LARP too. Because the only difference between us and them, is we do it for fun more than for self-defense.
And no, our weapons are not foam, nor padded save for a bit on a thrusting tip for safety alone.
7616355
My main concern is more with the fact that a cloth grip like that would provide no support to move the shield. It would hang awkwardly from the hand, impeding moment, and with a long spear in the other hand itd become a major liability in combat.
Even a simple wooden stick set between the daggers would suffice, at least temporarily.
7616371
So you're LARPing and taking it really, really seriously. There's a reason martial arts are considered a sport, not a category of warfare. Get over yourself already.
7616371
7616328
Sorry for entering this conversation, but...
GordonFreebrony has a point.
You wouldn't go up to someone who's trained in the art of karate or jiu jitsu and expect to be able to take them down because they haven't been in a "real fight", no matter how many years you spent fighting on the streets.
Essentially, even if what he is practicing isn't quite the same as X years ago, he still -mostly- knows what he is talking about.
~still the same guy who barely knows about spears.
7616382 That makes more sense. Thanks!
7616425
You'd be surprised how often that kind of thing happens in bar fights, because being able to hold your own in a ring where there are rules and you know what to expect is rather different from actually having someone jump you who's trying to hurt you. I was never big into martial arts, but I did Judo for long enough to at least find that out the hard way.
7616435
The martial arts were supposed to be symbolic....
I see your point, but that seems like it really depends on the person.
Some people might have an easier time transitioning from one to the other,
While others may never be able to switch.
Also don't some people train for different reasons?
Don't Some train for self defense, others train for personal reasons, and everything in-between?
Of course I have minimal knowledge about this, but, to me, it seems like someone who trained for self defense would have an easier time without rules, while someone who wanted to improve themselves would do better with rules.
Although, honesty, I would trust someone who has spent even just a year or two training with older weapons -in a controlled environment, more than someone who had just picked up a spear and had a few ideas on how to wield it.
(The second one wasn't supposed to symbolize you, I'm sorry if that had offended you)
I would rather have the information and have to adjust it, than not have it at all.
However, I don't know much about this, so I might be completely wrong with everything I've said.
7616490
Nah, it's fine. On principle, you're correct there. I was just annoyed by that guy's self-important attitude to what even most SCA members have the good sense to admit is just a silly hobby, not something that gives you a real idea of how to fight with medieval weapons.
7616395
I never said it was a category of warfare you asinine imbecile! I said it was a martial activity, a sport. We use practice the techniques of old and create new ones based on our safety standards in much the same way as any other martial art. Some of our number practice more than the even the black belt level masters do.
We are not a LARP, we are a recreation group. There is a reason we are known for being history purists.
7617118 If this devolves any further into hostility I will delete the argument. If you two are going to resort to name calling please move it to PMs. Thank you.
i want to read this but no post in several months i cant stand a story not finished
7875393 I understand
7875643 are you still writing it or what
7876404 life man. I got a full time job, I just don't have the energy, I've got the next chapter on the back burner.

I'm curious to read about Cadance and her vampony condition.
I just found this and I'm loving it. I look forward to future updates and how this all pans out.
This is an interesting original idea. Thank you author for this delicious slice of beefy content

None of the above honestly, I have a blog post where I paid an artist to render the thing in 3D

Ah K
A very interesting story. I would love to see more! :)
I’m still hoping to see Cadance’s role in all this.
Well, I think it was a wonderful story and that you are doing a great job at writing it.
I'm looking forward to the next chapter
A decent chapter.
You can call it the clawed sword spear
