Silly Sandra, you should know those filthy parasite worms always love to bite people. Orange master color!!
Just keep the girl until either A: you leave the area, or B: end slavery here.
Well, the human has been judged and punished as close to the american law as the context allows it, and considering he basically murdered someone without remorse, I don't feel too bad for him.
Unless actually, it was the little girl who accidentally killed the pony, and he's trying to take the blame to protect her.
...Uh, I have to admit I've got mixed feelings on the moral choice of the situation.
On one hand that 'hold energy quite well' bit intrigues me and the girl is literally asking for it.
But on the other, the girl bit muddles the waters quite a lot.
Personally I'd try caring for her and wait long enough so she's certain such a un-reversible life-choice is really what she wants, but I'll freely admit that's my talking from my comfy computer chair without any instinctive urges in the mix.
Speaking as a reader of a story, though, I think the most interesting outcome would be for Sandra to lose control. Something we really haven't seen from the protagonists side yet, and I think it could lead to some interesting questions being raised.
Treats humans as pets/farmanimals/slaves/secondary citizens, but then expect they be held to all accountability for their actions...
6263842 Were slaves ever excused when they lashed out at someone?
O this story just took a new twist and I am liking it.
good work DS.
Harts Fire
6263851 Could you spit on a slave and have them morph into the upperclass? It's the time frame and the phrases such as we are all americans, but then treats the human ones as needing handlers like at a zoo or as if they are all mentally deficient.
It's good story, but implies such negative things that some of us know is exactly how a great many would likely act in such a situation.
p.s.
Write more of this stuff.
Hmm... is this a little insight into why Neon was as rash as she was? Those internal debates with Karen?
Karen is a lot more fiesty than the other one.
6264222 If Will's guest was that kind of guest, this ENTIRE STORY would have been very different.
6264247 indeed.
6263851 Actually, yes, on many accounts (though, not all slaver cultures were the same on this). There were societies that put all the blame for the slave's actions on the slave's master (though, it wasn't better for the slaves themselves, since it also meant no protection from the master for them).
6264423 I'm not sure how that would apply at all when the master is the one that was killed by the slave.
6264494 Same as if the roof of his house falls on his head due to disrepair. Would anyone blame the roof for that?
6264509 The house would be torn down and replaced without a shred of emotion lost for the abused house.
I'm really failing to see the actual difference here.
6264515 And the slave would be sold or inherited with no emotions lost for the reasons why he did what he did. Though his new owner probably will be more careful around him in the future. The difference here is quite fundamental one - of whether the slave is considered something more than property or not.

Well, seeing what Karren is pushing Sandra to do in this situation, it's easy to see how Neon might have become the kind of leader that she did. Clearly, not all Spectra are as benign as Cindy!

Dude, it's a story. Human slave kills master, community punishes him to make an example, justifying their actions with hypocritical rhetoric. Simple.
There isn't really anything to argue about in this situation. Clean, cut and dry.
Hmm. I wonder if a vaccine could be made for the gift. Once you get it, you can't really get it again by touching, even the half humans. If a tiny bit of gift could be given and burned out extremely fast, maybe changing the skin color or giving the person a bit of magical ability, they would effectively be immune to it, right?
6266018 Not a bad theory! The trick would be how to infect someone -just a tiny bit-.
6266085
Sandra could probably finely control how much she put into someone with her tongues.
.... If she can control Karin.
and then suck it out again (although would that also remove the immunity?)
or have a unicorn / windy burn it out.
6266100 The infection happens when something from the energy plane comes into contact with a person on this plane, and the two get tangled together and the change happens. When that energy is expended, the pattern can pop free of the person, clearing up their head, but they're left with whatever physical changes happened during the energy expenditure.
6264858 I'm not arguing about the story.
6266085 Wasn't that exactly what happened back in 78?
6266195 Who was a tiny bit infected?
6266216 The humans in town, no?
6266220 Truth! In theory they could do something with that, if they hadn't fled it in general abject horror.
My Questions 1 Fresh Breeze how can she turn someone if they don't have the gift 2 what up with these ponies thinking slavery OK i know it been some months but if they still know America's rules shouldn't they know better!?!?! Something just shells fishy about all this and it's not just the slavery.
and hear are some reasons why it's wrong to turn the girl she is a child like twelve haven't you show us and the main characters say themselves that it's a bad idea to change them because they can turn into mindless animals easier then adults so i say no don't change her atleast until she adult and makes the choice herself
6267815 I feel bad. Fresh Breeze?
I've always seen emancipation as a way to get us to accept poor working conditions under contrived circumstances that they pretend to call freedom. So, yes it's actually unethical not to be a slave owner, if you are a nice one.
Catching up at the moment, and I noticed a most egregious error:
Unless the ponies are doing some truly disgusting things to their humans, I'd go with "seamstress" here.
6318847 Oops! Those typos get sneakier every day! Welcome back, and fixed.
Irony is when slavery comes back in the North rather than in the South.
6511169 You're making swift progress! I'm pleased to have captured your interest so. :)

Don't agree with their death penalty in how they're doing it, have reservations full stop on death penalty but understand there need for justice for a preconceived murder. This still boils down to an overall bad situational environment.
