What About Discord's Ulterior Motives? Also, Will the CMC Play a Large Role in the Finale? And Would Not Having a Happy Ending Really Be All That Bad? · 12:12am Nov 10th, 2015

Spoiler Alert: I'm going to be talking about episode 22 of season 5 of MLP:FIM, and speculating about the finale. If you are not caught up to the 22nd episode, then catch up before reading this. If you are caught up, read on. Or don't. I don't control you. You have free will. Hopefully.

Reddit Reposting, Episode 5: Ghosts & Funerals · 9:52pm Jul 26th, 2022

As always, I'll probably entirely rewrite the preface to my original Reddit post and replace it with 2022 commentary. In this case, I encourage you all to open up a discussion on unicorn vs. alicorn magic that I shouted out back in 2017 with an easily-buried link in a new tab as

S8 Prediction (minor spoiler) · 7:23pm Sep 9th, 2017

After watching a released animatic on youtube from season eight of My Little Pony, I have decided to come up with a prediction based off it. Since it's about the next season and has major implications, I'm counting it as a spoiler. As such, don't continue if you don't want to know.

“He’s a God, You Fool. It’ll Take More Than One Shot.”: Immortality and Death · 2:14am Sep 20th, 2016

There is one part I always remember about Princess Mononoke. Well, a few parts: that creepy scene with the humans disguised as boars and the tentacle animal monsters, for instance. But one line in particular stuck with me more than any other. At the climax when Lady Eboshi shoots the great forest spirit. A bullet pierces its head, but it calmly continues walking. The men look on in disbelief, and Lady Eboshi chastises them, “He’s a god, you fool. It’ll take more than one shot.”

Vanity Characters vs. Story Characters · 4:57am Sep 27th, 2016

Speculation and Worldbuilding: Immortality and Emotion · 3:41pm Apr 28th, 2015

Immortality—or a functional equivalent—is one of those situations that presents an interesting challenge to writers. It has no real life equivalent, so writers have nothing to reference to give it verisimilitude. Like all unorthodox situations, the freedom available to writers is offset by the need to ground it in reality and consistency. How would one react to situations, how would they act, if they had lived for centuries or millenia? How would it affect their outlook? Or their emotions?

Speculation and Worldbuilding: Magical Pony Sports · 6:49pm Nov 26th, 2014

A major part of worldbuilding is sports and games. Taking something familiar and changing it slightly has multiple uses. It creates verisimilitude by showing that your fictional world still has and plays games. It creates a slight disconnect from the audience, because they can recognize that the mechanics are similar, yet not identical (a smaller version of the Uncanny Valley, if you will). It also gives you a chance to showcase the fantastical elements of your setting and tie them into

Theory: the neurotic behavior of Twilight Sparkle · 12:56am Apr 4th, 2017

Early in My Little Pony, we saw how neurotic and fearful Twilight Sparkle could be. For example, she came up with the idea of Celestia banishing a pony, then locking them in a cage in the place they have been banished to in "A Bird in The Hoof." Also, practically everyone who is familiar with the fandom is also familiar with the "Magic Kindergarten" line from Lesson Zero. Often, it's thought that this neurotic behavior from Twilight is something she had in her childhood.

WARNING: SPOILERS FOR A 'ROYAL PROBLEM' BELOW. DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE EPISODE.

Now that that's out of the way, thinking about the episode I noticed something interesting. Celestias 'evil form of Daybreaker had a very similar style to something else we've seen in the series. Does anybody else remember what?

One more clue. Extreme frustration brought about an extreme physical change.

Like Student like teacher.

Do you ever wonder... · 10:28am Oct 11th, 2015

Sometimes I suspect that DHX/Hasbro/Equestria has spies in the brony community. Look at all these reaction blogs we got after this last episode. You ever wonder if someone from the show's production reads those for the feedback? It's a good place to find it, if you're in the market for it.

They might not be actual spies, per se, but I totally wouldn't be surprised if at least a few FIMfic accounts belonged to canon operators.

Do Earth Ponies have magic teeth? · 7:07pm Oct 25th, 2015

So this was a fun episode. I have some things to say.

Spoilers. Of course. And still no pictures. That ish's hard, yo.

In no particular order,

Now we know for sure that Pinkie is at least a twin. Judging by them all being around the same size in the flashback last time, it's even more likely that they're quadruplets. What an interesting thing for Pinkie Pie to be and never bring up. Maybe it's just really common for ponies (or maybe just for earth ponies?).

I loved it. Not so much because Starlight Glimmer (anything about her, really), but everything else. Really, I like to look at this special as a nod to fanfiction, because I swear the writers were looking at us for this one, maybe even more than #100.

Speculation and Worldbuilding: Pony Playing Cards—Construction and Symbology · 4:29am Aug 10th, 2015

Games are an important form of ancillary worldbuilding. They create verisimilitude by showing that characters do play games, but can also create a fundamental alien-ness. Think of the Dejarik from Star Wars or the 3D chess from Star Trek.

Speculation and Worldbuilding; Unicorn Combat and Weapons · 4:55am Apr 9th, 2015

Unicorns present an interesting combat scenario. Not only do they lack traditional human biometrics, they have telekinesis. This means that traditional single combat applies even less to them than it does to the other ponies, because their options are much greater and varied.

This blog post is a meandering mental exercise about one possible form unicorn combat may take.

Influences include the Shadow Wars Storyverse, the Pony POV verse, Alara J. Speculation and Worldbuilding: Pony Biomechanics and Video Game Controllers · 12:57am Aug 25th, 2016

Those who have been following me for a while know that I find pony kinesiology and biomechanics to be an interesting topic for musing. Because ponies are so physically different from humans, any and all of their technology and day-to-day objects would have to be fundamentally different to work for them. Designing something as simple as a door handle or pair of scissors requires a completely new approach and mindset when dealing with ponies.
