So Whisper has found her own way of contributing to the fighting! And it's an extremely Whisper way of contributing.
Also, random thought I wanted to share: I found it amusing and quite satisfying that, after having named one of Serenity's changelings Ocelli, the newest changeling in the show is named Ocellus.
Never change, you amazing bitch.

A very Whisper way indeed. I love it.
"It's stupid!" For once I actually kept up with Whisper. At least, I was ahead of her before she explained this. My mind actually immediately jumped to a scene from a Halo novel. Computer intrusion expert is getting out his gear to get into a computer until his teammate tapped a post-it on the screen. "Password's posted."
Also, I love the new changeling.

I still can't stand Sickle, but I do love her one-liners.
(No post related)
So the hive wants to talk, do they? I wonder if that's true or if it's just a diversion. Either way, it'll be very interesting to hear what they have to say.

Are you aware that while the crew making the show are technically forbidden from reading and watching fanfiction material, it has been concluded that they are, and sometimes let little nods in the show?
Might be one of them.

Overly burdensome password rules are one of my pet peeves, and one that I decided Whisper, being into computer security/intrusion and such, happened to share.
Plus, a good deal of "hacking" is dealing with the people who use the computer, rather than the computer itself. It's why one of her "hacks" involved searching the desk drawers and finding the note containing the password.

Heh! As awesome as that would be, it's a pretty small character in a fairly unknown story. I'm happy enough knowing that we ended up thinking along the same lines for a character name, even if "insect body parts" is a pretty easy theme

The more obscure, the higher the chance. They can't put anything obvious in. Don't fight this...
Just let it happen...
8955006
Stay classy Sickle -salutes her and also slips her some more drugs...never can have enough of that!-

hotmail screwed me by not letting me cycle passwords anymore, I hate stupid password rules. especially when they force me to abandon good strong passwords.

I've always loved this XKCD comic.

Hopefully not for very long.
"several seconds later later he was"
"several seconds later he was"?
"but I could I could filter it down"
"but I could filter it down"?

Oh, wow. Bad enough that I did it once, but I managed to do it twice.
Fixed

It is a bit funny, yeah, but these things happen sometimes. :D
If they had any entomologists in their army, they'd be freaking out right now.
Wasps of the Braconidae family are parasitic in nature; they inject their eggs into caterpillars, which eventually die when dozens of wasp larvae eat them inside out. It's basically a chestburster party.
Whatever Serenity is planning, it's probably all about destroying them from the inside, whether with a literal bomb, or some info that will make them turn on each other.
8955872
Oh, I'm sure it's completely innocent. Just another bug-related name picked for no particular importance. Nothing to worry about here.
sickle and echo have been surprisingly patient with being out of there elements this long.
starlight hasn't had much to do lately.
dusty is not happy becoming an army commander.
and to top it all of whisper is about to go from espionage to diplomat. POLITICS AM I RIGHT.
i know its been a few centuries scene the Apocalypse but madness on this level should be enough to resurrect discord

yeah, I had 4 passwords like the one I posted and I think muscle memory was the only reason I remember them.
The espionage and subterfuge in this chapter hits all the right notes. War is won by information, and misinformation, as much as soldiers, after all.
kudos for another great chapter. I am surprised by your knowledge in IT and military. It makes the reading quite enjoyable.
But now I wonder why they didnt use a public/private key algorithm for updating the passwords instead of a list. xD
8956143
For Serenity, it's mostly because of what Whisper noted: they have good training, but not much experience. Their radio security doesn't assume the possibility of their network being compromised, and even in the unforeseen event that they were somehow compromised, the regular key changes would mitigate any damage. A public/private key setup for updating encryption keys would be better, but it's much more complex to set up, relies on encryption techniques that may not have even been developed or simply not known to this particular group (Fallout and Fallout: Equestria encryption appears to be pretty crude), and would rely on keeping a precise accounting of all lost PipBucks (Otherwise some of those PipBucks would still be getting that information). But possibly more importantly, the information security they already have is already vastly beyond the capabilities of any known faction, so they have no impetus to improve the system further.
And that list really isn't supposed to be in that PipBuck. Just like you're not supposed to write down your passwords, but people still do it.
As for Whisper, she didn't do it because, even if she knows of the technique (And if it exists, she's probably at least aware of the concept), it's a bit much for a single sleep-deprived changeling with modest crypto skills to program all on her own on such short notice.
8956166
hmm interesting. well I am not an expert in cripto but I know the pgp algorithm that is in my opinion easier that a single key encryption.
Just to keep the fangasm, in this scenario a pipbuck could be equipped with a dead-pony switch. In the moment that the medical system detects the death of the user , erase the private keys or lock them...
Congratulations on being the first FO:E story I've come across to have an action scene delivered entirely over radio!
This is such a great story.
A diversion, or an attempt to make them give up by threats of nuking their settlements, could be anything like that.....this is so EXCITING!!!
Hooray for new Chapter! AWESOME!!! xd
That whole dance Whisper keeps doing to pass on captured information without passing on that she's passing on captured information...
You wouldn't happen to have read Cryptonomicon before, have you? That sort of thing actually takes up a surprising amount of the plot in certain plotlines in that book.
8959808
I haven't, but it's one that I've been meaning to read for a long time! It sounded like something I'd probably enjoy.
The 'dance' is mostly inspired by real-world examples, including the same one I understand Cryptonomicon draws on: the concerns in WW2 over how to use decrypted Enigma intercepts to best effect without giving away that the messages were being read. It's an interesting balance, where the more advantage you give yourself, the more likely that advantage goes away. It's surprisingly fun to write.

I read Snow Crash / Diamond Age / Cryptonomicon in that order, seemed to work pretty well. Could probably move Cryptonomicon around that order to some extent (though I think I still slightly prefer that reading order), but Snow Crash / Diamond Age should definitely go in that order.
Tended to notice a lot of "Hey, wait a second, didn't that happen in..." (or in the case of Cryptonomicon, almost like a prequel to what happens in the other two) going on between them when read in that order.
Also funny when you notice a recurring character in Snow Crash, basically *all* interwoven timelines in Cryptonomicon, *and* his Baroque Cycle series (which was less to my liking than his other books). I'll leave it at that for you to discover which character. I'll say that the reading order I suggested will make it more of a neat surprise than if you move Cryptonomicon into what would seem like chronological order, though. (Baroque Cycle series is almost a pre-prequel, and yet I'd read it *after* those others really...)
(On an unrelated side note, I could totally see a crossover between "Reamde" by Stephenson and "For The Win" by Doctorow working out pretty well...)

Which will most likely include the changeling requesting a personal audience with ‘Queen’ Whisper, in full view of as many guards as possible, and using some sort of plan to clearly indicate that Whisper is nota queen, at which point, negotiations may break off. The fact said negotiator no longer has any guards(And said guards didnt seem to even wait to make sure that the negotiator didnt get shot on sight), implies they dont plan on coming back alive, probably being killed in the most likely chaotic reaction to the reveal.
Which means there's no actual benefit to what they are negotiating( They obviously are nonchalant at how this ‘negotiation’ ends), so the hive can write it off as never happening in the first place, and presumably be able to launch an attack when their enemy is arguing with eachother, Whisper likely being locked in a cell of some sort, or detained. At which point Whispers only way out is to alert them that they have Serenity's comms, an attack is on the way, and they need to move.
And however that ends, their entire army, and any advantage they had, is broken, as well as any possibility of trust between them and Whisper.
... I'm gonna stop there as I'm reading a bit much into it.
I think i’ve said too much.

you think the original Fallout equestria is dark, crack open project horizens, that fic twords the end just hammers a spike into your heart and wont let up till its bled all the feels out of you and left you a withered whimpering husk

Wait... those seven lines of 32 characters she found earlier... were those passwords?
...that is what she has, isn't it?
Haaahahaaa! I knew it
Poor Echo will never get the last word
Myeeeeah.... you're not fighting random raiders anymore, Sickle... you're fighting an actual trained army. Might not be as much fun as you think
Bwahahaha.
But of course she has
Hah. General Dusty!
Bwahaha
Oh, true. No need to tell anyone now. If all comms go through Dusty, and he has Whisper tracking the Serenity communications, he can direct everything as needed, with the required subtlety to keep Serenity from catching on.
Ah. They probably want to convey their megaspell threat?
Remarks and corrections:
> But I do, and I did, and its… and I figured out how to repurpose their audio encryption
Would make a lot more sense for that to be "and it's…"
HAHAH ya think?
