For centuries, Equestria has been lead by an omnipotent regent that knew right from wrong, guilty from innocent, brave from cowardly, truth from lie...

But there was an earth pony settlement, founded only a hundred years ago, which didn't fully accustom to this form of state. They elected a mayor to act in their name, over their own, though bowing to the higher ladies.

With a princess of their own, there no longer was a need to hold elections, choose one of them to represent them, rule them self to a distinctive degree. Democracy had been abandoned.

All this, Twilight Sparkle has put thought into, and she has proposed a letter to the princess, informing her of her plans. Princess Celestia's reaction might be a lot different to Twilight's suggestion than the newly crowned Princess of Friendship had thought.

There is a reason why Celestia is still in charge after so long, and she will explain to Twilight why that is.

The mall. A huge area filled with shops of all kinds. Finding the perfect birthday gift for your own sister, whom you've known your whole life, should be easy in such a place… right?

Yeah, sure. As long as your sister's name isn't Celestia.

Luckily, the mall is also a great place to have fun, even if your big sister has gone to a shop you don't like. Who knows, maybe you'll get to make a star out of her thanks to a guy you met by accident and who claims to be a part of a rock band? They all wear ripped clothes anyway, so there's nothing to worry about, right?

Yeah… sure. As long as your vice principal, feared by pretty much the entire school, doesn't suddenly materialize next to you and yell at you.

But wait. Why does she seem different than at school? Kind of… nicer? What's going on?

This was supposed to be a quick, short comedy (Pinkie Promise!), but ended up as a two-part, somewhat humorous, more than 30 pages long (in Word, at least) slice of life I've written for over a year.

On a dark night filled with even darker magics, an insane cult attempts to give Nightmare Moon a body and life of her own, utterly separate from Princess Luna. But, when the spell is interrupted by Celestia, something unexpected is created.

Now, a little black alicorn filly named Nyx finds herself living under the care of Twilight Sparkle, only to be haunted by memories and emotions from her past. Is she Nightmare Moon reborn or is she simply a doppelganger with a soul and mind of her own? Can Twilight Sparkle protect Nyx from those who refuse to see past her dragon eyes and black coat?

Or, will Nyx be forced to inherit the sins that may not even be hers and become the greatest evil Equestria has ever known?

It's the height of summer in Canterlot, and everything is peaceful for Celestia, sole ruler of Equestria and regent of the sun and moon. Her newest and youngest of pupils is mastering every task set before her, moving through every subject with confidence and skill.

Every subject except for one, that is.

Little Sunset Shimmer can't swim. And Princess Celestia aims to fix that... no matter how difficult it ends up being.

In line with the continuity of A Tale of Two Suns, Book 1: The Two Suns, but it's not particularly necessary to read that first.
