    River City Equestria Girls?

Seriously, that's Pinkie Pie on the left, and Rainbow Dash on the right. Tell me I'm wrong.

I will not write a fanfic about the two of them getting into all the fights.

    Probably.

An "I don't have livejournal anymore" sort of update.

    It snowed yesterday.

Which just reminded me how much I don't like winter. It wasn't even a bad snow, just enough of a dusting to linger for a little bit. First one of the season. And I even had the day off from work, due to my schedule, so it's not like I had to do anything ...

    So I didn't.

    Happy Halloween!

So yeah. Despite various distractions (Steam had Darkest Dungeon for UNDER FOUR BUCKS), I've managed to hammer out a ridiculously shippy conclusion to the self indulgent Rarijack story I started.

So that's fun? I gave myself a deadline to finish things on Oct 31, so that's what I did, dangit. Hopefully you guys will enjoy.

More ... more pony? · 2:25pm Feb 25th, 2021

Here's the announcement/sneak peek, if you haven't seen it yet.

So that's what G5 looks like! Maybe!

Folks are already up in arms (hooves?) about how the show's premise means that Twilight & Co. screwed up, but ... eh? Honestly, I see this as more as an attempt at a clean break from the FiM juggernaut. I think FanofMostEverything put forth a compelling theory that maybe Twilight's adventures were fictionalized adventures or something. Or, well, they COULD be, and that'd be a handy way to deal with it. Though getting into that kind of metatext makes me think of the Flash Sentry Papers, and how this new pony might cross paths with one George MacDonald Fresian, but that's me just being more self indulgent than usual.

Still, just from the tiny amount of info we've seen so far, it looks ... fine? Like, perfectly cromulent kids entertainment. Which, y'know, toy franchise for little girls and all. And again, much like the superdeformed antics of G4.5 or whatever Pony Life is, I kind of see this as a definite choice on Hasbro's part. The CGI looks ... fairly generic, like a bunch of other kids animation. Moreover, it's decidedly NOT the big anime eyes and palette-swapped designs from FiM. Like, maybe I've got my tinfoil hat on, but it kind of feels like they're trying to make sure a bunch of beardy old weirdos DON'T latch onto the show? I mean, maybe it's just a conspiracy theory, but still. The real telling will be in the casting, I think. If they bring back Tara Strong et al, either as old characters or new ones, then I'll happily admit I'm wrong.

Then again, Hasbro's also happy to make stuff directly targeted at older collectors. With, uh ... mixed success. Seriously, Siege/Earthrise on Netflix is way too dour. And there are even points where Optimus Prime goes "Transform, and roll out!" and then nobody transforms, because they didn't have the budget to model half the characters' car modes. I mean, come on! But that's another rant entirely.

Anyway, just thought I'd share my random thoughts on the matter before I went and got ahead with my day. Important stuff, y'know.

Less a theory and more a hope. But yeah, this is definitely the best attitude for approaching what's to come.

I agree, I don't care that people don’t like it

Man, seriously? I've been trying to tell people for 9 years that Hasbro treats us with kid gloves compared to the sheer hell Transformers fans are subjected to lol.

Guess it's a good thing I stopped watching Transformers with the pilot of RID. Or was it Cyberverse? I don't fucking know, they're all the same these days.

I was looking forward to G5, but the more I hear people talk about it, the less I find myself caring.

It's better than I feared, but this is heavily implying twilight failed spectacularly, not sure how they are gonna swing that.

Depending on how long the timegap between G4 and G5 is, it could be Twilight's successor(s) who mucked everything up. At least, I'm hoping that's how they're going to "swing it".

5461359
I keep forgetting cannon twilight is mortal, still doesn't explain where a certain 2 princess's buggered off to :trollestia:

Honestly, the toys are better than ever, and IDW's delivered solid comics for over a decade now (even if I could talk your ear off about James Roberts being way too precious with his OC's). It's just the TV/movie adaptations that they keep stumbling with.

5461329

I actually watched a random ep of Cyberverse on Netflix a bit ago, and y'know, it was actually pretty fun? It's got a different take on most characters, sure-- but it's got the sense of goofy fun that people try to forget was in the G1 cartoon (Basketball Optimus Prime, anybody?). Whereas the Netflix-only Siege & Earthrise shows are, like, twice the length they need to be, because everyone's talking ... so ... slowly.

I'm going to give it a chance myself.
Sunny looks really cute, and from what I read somewhere earlier (can't remember WHEN, exactly), it's just the MOVIE that's going to be in CGI, and the series itself is going to be in regular 2-D animation.

And as to this:

If they bring back Tara Strong et al

well, Tara herself has ALREADY said that Twilight was NOT going to return to to the new series, because Tara herself was already moving on to other jobs, and such, and Ashleigh said that SHE wouldn't be because she wanted to focus more on her music and her band.
So I seriously doubt that ANY of the FiM voice cast will be returning for Gen5.
I think that the closest that we'll get to any of them is the memorabilia that Sunny has of them in her bedroom.
Be interesting to see just who they DID get to voice Sunny and Friends.

Not sure how I feel about the animation style, but that isn't saying much seeing as I quite disliked the FiM style when it first came out.

As for the story, it's big budget fan fiction. That isn't anything bad in and of itself (there is a LOT of really good fan fiction out there) but would probably help if we went into the show with that mindset. Long running franchises have been doing that for decades (Marvel/DC, I'm looking at you) successfully.

"Twilight is an immortal alicorn" is already confirmed canon, so it being her ancestors is unlikely. If I had to make the decision, I'd leave the question basically unanswered with only a few hints. "She disappeared the same time magic did X years ago. Nopony knows what happened."

Of course there are a minimum of six confirmed immortals and several other possibles. How they end up getting rid of all of them will be interesting.

5461359
Dammit, Luster Dawn!

What did you do?

😜

5461585
This, perhaps?
(Criminally underrated fic, by the by.)

That Twilight did not usher in world harmony forever and ever, friendship without end, amen, doesn't mean she "failed spectacularly".

5461438

, and Ashleigh said that SHE wouldn't be because she wanted to focus more on her music and her band.

Do go see Hey Ocean if you ever get a chance, they’re fucking fantastic, even if I like their older stuff more.

5461710 Okay, I will!
Thanks for the link, hun!

I was doubtful about the "bedsheet" artwork, but the 3D stuff looks very nice! Yes, it's egregiously soft and pastel, but... TARGET AUDIENCE and all that. It's the story that will make or break it, and we won't really know about that until it premiers... or MASSIVE SPOILER.

Show might be good, but the fans are ruining it for you? Gee, that sounds familiar. :facehoof:

There's a G5 fic in the featured box already.

We know nothing about this show.

I don't have enough eyes to roll.

:rainbowlaugh::facehoof: < Because there isn't an icon for hatelaugh.

EDIT: Oh Ghawd, I looked at it, and it's the second G5 story the guy has written! The first one is based on the bedsheets! :facehoof::facehoof::facehoof:

Clearly trying to get ahead of the trend.

I mean, I've done that, but it's only to write exceedingly stupid shit. I'm surprised I've only got three of those to link.

Of course, everyone should be reading this now:

Hey, Cutie Mark Cancer was perfectly logical! I know Cherenkov radiation when I see it, and Rainbow Power would have killed Marie Cutie Curie!

Let's hope, that if G5 sucks, your fic is prophetic. Then we could hate-watch, at least.

I just reread it, and sadly, it is not. :C The one I lucked out on was Rainbow Rocks.

Though I still say Like a G5 is one of the best things I ever wrote. :V
