Story Spotlight - The Flower Mare

Shh, I didn't totally forget to do these. Nope, not at all...

    *cough*

A-Anyway. It's time to show off what is possibaly my favourite set of stories on the whole site. Hell, these are probably my favourite fanfictions. Period!

    Introducing.

    TThe Flower Mare
One day, the Crusaders happen upon Ponyville’s newest, specialty flower vendor: a young mare from Alemaneia named Schneeblume. They think she’s hiding something. Turns out she is, though not in a way they expected at all.

    Disablling Notifications

Does anyone know if you can disable certain notifications?

Seeing stories you worked so hard on get added to things like 'Crap stories' and 'Dead shelf' is... well its a little disheartening. Maybe my work isn't the best. But if you hate it, don't rub it in my face like that. I know pleasing everyone is impossible... but come on. The whole bookshelf system is... yeh.

Ugg... I’d report it to a dev and ask to have it removed. There needs to be an authors permission system in place, if there’s not one already, to prevent this..

Honestly, I'd just be happy with the ability to hide notifications.

I mostly ignore them or either embrace the hate. The most annoying one I ever had was when I got at least 150 notifications from the same guys spamming the favorite stories going into their dislike folder.

Why would someone have folders like that? If I think a story isn't worth reading, I just take it OFF OF MY SHELVES! Not make a separate one explicitly to not revisit!
Though saying the bookshelf system is broken... I don't quite agree. How else could I have my Super Favorites separate from my other stories, or specify certain crossover types as opposed to others? Though I would like to be able to move those shelves around, some of them are farther away from the top than I would like, due simply to when I first made them.

This is one of those odd topics where we weigh freedom vs common decency. The ability to have multiple folders so you can sort your stories is a good thing. But at the same time, when someone labels one of those folders something insulting then puts someone else's story into it, that’s a bad thing.

I think putting a hard limit on the number of folders that notify the writer would solve the problem. Limiting writer notifications to Favorites and Tracking would remove the abuse, while allowing an author to see who really likes their stories or who is following them. And someone could still have as many custom folders as they need.

Either that, or make it so that when you move something to a folder with notifications turned on, it notifies your entire feed. So if you spam it or are making insultingly named folders, you can expect to lose all your followers or get a nice influx of complaints.

he's talking about personal libraries i think, but yes, having author permission to add a story to a group is very needed.

Ah yeah, I remember someone sticking a story of mine in a folder called Crappy Fics which was labeled Based on Ratings.

So they apparently didn't even bother to read a word of it but just made an assumption based on popular consensus? Never mind that I tend to get downvote bombed within the first minute of posting something sometimes, making it clear other people didn't bother to give the story a slight chance either! Ah well, that's what happens when your niche is often somewhat extreme fetishes...

Anyhow, it would be nice if you could block certain notifications to groups, even if you had to do it individually? Like say you can mark it so any adds to that group won't show up anymore?

Otherwise I'm okay with the system; I try and see why someone doesn't like the work and strive to improve where I can without compromising my identity as a writer. As another writer told me, keep fighting the good fight!

I wouldn't let a bookshelf determine your writing prowess. Let your actual readers decide that for themselves, and I'm sure they more than enjoy your work (I sure as hell do).

And man some of my stories are in some gnarly bookshelves. Wear it with a badge of pride!

Agreed... I just think it is something to do with how “internet culture” is inclined to being disrespectful or mean. Just think about, of how many memes and other stuff are based around that.

Bruh I know exactly how you feel. I know I am not a good storyteller or editor but do you really have put my stuff in bookshelves with titles like “Read, don’t like” just unfavorite or downvoted it, or even make a comment saying what you don’t like about.

Agreed. There's no need to be abusive; I generally try to only comment on stuff I like. Or on stuff I like that is taking a wrong turn. Constructively. Of course, even then sometimes people act super butt-hurt, so I still try to avoid it. Even though then they complain that they're getting downvotes with no explanation of why... damned if I do, damned if I don't, I guess. :derpytongue2:

Dead story shelves on the other hand... don't take those as an insult. I have a couple of those myself for things I want to keep track of in case they come back to life. I move things into them occasionally to shrink the size of my tracking/favorites shelves a little. Being on there means I like the story and want to read more of it, and while it doesn't seem to be coming back... maybe someday! :pinkiegasp:

That said, my bulk "Dead" shelf is set to private. Dead Favorites is public because... hey, maybe the notification will reach the author and they'll remember "OH YEAH! I forgot I was gonna post something on that!" :raritywink:

It's amazing when they magically come back to life a couple days after getting added to a dead shelf--a good thing for everyone!

If you find out, let me know

Honestly, I suspect 90% of the people who make bookshelves just for "crap stories"?

They're deliberately doing it to be assholes. If you actually dislike a story, there's no reason to have it on your bookshelf.

"Dead story shelves" I have a bit of a kinder outlook on, speaking as a person who has one of them. That's all in the titling of the shelf - name it something positive, like "Hoping for Continuation" (which is what mine is named). Not "Dead Stories", which sounds negative right off the bat.

I think if people knew the author can see when you put a story on a shelf (and which shelf it is), it would make a lot of them, the decent ones, reconsider their shelf titles. And subsequently encourage you to ignore anyone who actually uses shelves like "Crap stories".

This is news to me. I knew that the authors were notified when a reader puts a story into his Favorites list, but come on! Why notify the author about EVERY bookshelf that ANY reader decides to sort a story into? That makes no sense to me.

if a story I read or intend to read doesn't have a new chapter for at least a year, I put it in my "Graveyard" shelf, yes, I made this shelf public...
I don't see it as a bad thing having a "Graveyard" shelf since the story may revive one day (lots of stories there already did)...
I also have a "Completed" shelf all complete stories that I've read will go there (good, bad, smut, any story) and this one is also public.
Now "crap" shelves... nope, I don't have a shelf like that and don't intend to have, its just like being salty for something you don't like, if I don't like a story, I may only give a critique or just don't read if its really that bad...

in an unrelated note: some of the stories I call self-sinsert, stories cringey and/or bad that I struggle to read one full chapter of it.

“Dead Stories” usually means the story hasn’t been updated, and generally if it’s in that kind of shelf, it means it’s being tracked in case it ever does update, so it won’t get lost among other updates.

Least that’s what my dead stories shelf is for, and it’s only for stories that haven’t updated in up to two years.

As for the “crap stories” shelves, well, those are just people being assholes.

I know what you mean man, but don't let it get to you. People like that can screw themselves, but it's your choice to continue those stories. You don't have and if they add them to those shelves, who cares, there are soooooo many people who love your work man. And I'm one of them. I added to of them to my top twenty cause they inspired me! I wish I was half as talented as you man! Don't worry about what others think, just keep going! You got this my friend. And if you ever need someone to talk to, PM me.

Dead shelf Is not an insult. Its just a place to put stories that seem to have been abandoned by the writer.
The Princess and the Human is on my "probably dead" shelf since it hasn't updated in over a year and you dont seem to acknowledge it at all.
If you dont want people to add stories to their dead shelves just post a comment on the story and explain that it has not been abandoned.

I don't know if there's a way.
