"Dino" Deathmatch: Creeps from the Deep, POLL · 4:05am Aug 22nd, 2018
Still working on the next chapter as I work through proofing works for friends and graduate school work (helping teach classes and working in the lab), but doesn't mean I can't vent in one of the best ways I know how. Writing a fight scene. And who doesn't love a good fight?
This time the ring goes out into the depths of the sea to pit two of the most powerful predators to ever swim the seas to tussle in the tides. "Dino" in quotations as, since there are no penguins or Spinosaurids about and since we're talking aquatic animals, there are no dinosaurs to be had here. Instead our contenders are arguably the largest predatory reptile and mammal to ever exist and from opposite sides of the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary.
It's a clash between two very different skill-sets. On one side, the massive gape, maneuverable body, slashing fangs, and multiple jaws of the serpentine Mosasaurus. On the other, the massive fangs, crushing jaws, and sonar of the bulky Livyatan. Would the age of reptiles have a serious challenger amongst the suppressed mammals if their titanic descendant from 50 million years later arrived early? Or would the scaly, ferocious, slithering form with rending teeth carve the mammal to shreds? The winner of this match up takes on Megalodon in a future contest for the crown of Monarch of the Seas!
Butcher of the Cretaceous Seas vs. Terror of the Tertiary Oceans!
Hoffmann's River Reptile vs. Melville's Biblical Beast!
Rending Jaws vs. Crushing Fangs!
Largest Reptilian Predator of All Time vs. The Apex of Mammalian Carnivory!
Species:Mosasaurus hoffmannii ("Hoffmann's Meuse River Lizard")
Family: Aquatic Varanid ("Monitor") lizard
Length: 17 meters (55 feet)
Weight: 20-25 tons
Species: Livyatana melvilli ("Melville's Leviathan")
Family: Toothed Cetacean ("Dolphins" and "Sperm Whales")
Length: 16 meters (52 feet)
Weight: 60 tons
And, as a little tie-in to some popular culture, this will also be the first death match to have two possible rounds. If Livyatan manages to churn out a win against the Mosasaurus, it'll go up against this bruiser!
Species:Mosasaurus ingens ("InGen's Meuse River Lizard")
Family: Aquatic Varanid ("Monitor") lizard, genetically engineered
Length: 25 meters (82 feet)
Weight: 30 tons
I believe this song fits the title:

I was legit right in the middle of loading this remix when you posted that! Ahaha, great minds think alike.

Just one thing I have to ask didn’t levyiatan melvlie grow larger then 52 ,feet sperm whales can reach a maximum of 80 feet just saying.

Lol, I knew the title was in reference to Cryoshell's song, (which btw, was also used in the Barraki Bionicle ads), but in all honesty, it's a great song from an awesome band.

I was using average sizes. Livyatan is actually proportionally shorter length wise than modern sperm whales because it has a shorter, but much more robust snout; but in terms of overall mass it was likely larger. So for instance a 52 foot Livyatan weighs about as much as a 68 foot long modern sperm whale. 80 footers would be a big outlier, but possible. It's just for the sake of ease I'm sticking to averages.

Oh ok my mistake I just got confused I forgot.

Sorry, but I don't think that song is fitting since I seem to not like this... Edgy music genre
Oh underwater fight, i love those. I'm gonna stick to my usual matra of size and mass usually trump speed when its one on one.
I'm betting on the Mosasaurus.
Oh Lord, this promises to be a hell of a match-up!
I'll be rooting for the Mosasaurus, but we shall see...
Tough call. I want both of my bois to win... But ultimately I cast my vote in favor of Mosa for maneuverability, and wider slashing jaws.
I think the livyatana would win the reason is I think it has a more thicker hide than a sperm whale, mososaur would pears the skin but it would have a difficult time just to puncture the skin. I don’t what the outcome is so i just want to see what happens .

This will probably put the title and song in better context.
Honestly, given how the last two match ups have gone, my money's on Melville's Leviathan. I could be wrong, considering I'm not the best at calling these things or DeathBattles, but that's just what i think.
Considering how powerful the sonar of a large whale can be, and how close the opponents are otherwise, I'm going to give my vote to the living sonic canon.
Seriously, modern whales can stun or even kill prey using their sonar. Even if the Mosasaurus is able to survive the Livyatan's sonar, being hit with such an attack from long range will give the whale a definitive edge.

True that, Dolphins have been known to use their sonar to stun sharks that get too close to the pod
Since some cetaceans have been known to use their sonar to stun prey, I'm going to go with Moby Dick's ancestor.
Neat. I voted for the moasasaur, despite knowing that the larger more powerful animal usually winds up winning these things. I'm just a contrarian like that.
