    Chapter 56 Promo!

In an isolated, abnormally large, hollowed-out tree might not be the typical abode for megalomaniacal n'ere-do-wells. Though, there was a reason both of them had opted for current accommodations over the typical kingdoms and castles, in one form or another. The area was absolutely inundated with dark magic. From the eerie glow that some of the plants gave off, to traces of black aerenth crystals

Character Profiles: Queen Maui and Eno · 10:35pm May 23rd, 2017

Queen Maui

Title: the Queen of Mako
"Welcome to Mako, hehe always wanted to say that!"

Stats:
Species: Mermare
Height: 1.4 meters
Weight: N/A.... (50 kilograms)
Length: 3 meters
Relatives:
Regent Li’ban Tonn - Distant Ancestor
Queen Amatheia Sairíne - Distant Relative
Faction: Mako Island Mermare Queendom, Equestria
Morality: Maui is a naturally good leader and a gifted statesmare. It and her being concerned with her domain as a whole are one of the big reasons she was chosen to become queen aside from her natural magic talent. Unlike most of her predecessors, Maui has been pushing hard for Mako to have more casual relations with Equestria proper and find a way for outsiders to safely travel through The Shroud. Around others, Maui is polite even if her mind works at a mile a minute. Except cats, she's utterly terrified of domestic felines and wants nothing to do with them.
Traits: Typical for a mermare, being extremely agile and nimble underwater, able to breath underwater without issue, resistance to cold, immunity to her species' own song magic, ability to see clearly underwater, and a very high level of magical knowledge and talent.

Bio:

Queen Maui's parentage wasn't miraculous. She is a distant relative of the first queen and her successor, but the relation is so small she wasn't given any special treatment. What she has had going for her as an insatiable curiosity about what's foreign. When she was young she had an extremely common habit of sneaking off and assuming her disguise to board passing ships or mill about port towns. This came to bite her in the tail-fluke when one supposed passenger on a ship saw her leaving and what she turned into upon jumping into the sea. A day later she found a ship parked very close to The Shroud, the perpetual storm and fog bank that surrounds Mako. When she tried to sneak onto it, it turned out to be a pirate vessel and her cover was blown when one crew member ambushed her with a bucket of water. Held captive for days with demands she grant them wishes or luck magic, thankfully spared worse requests due to her young age. Eventually the pirate ship drew the attention of Equestria proper and the Royal Guard managed to ambush them by disguising themselves as a ferry ship. Found in her cell and freed by two guards, Maui helped the small group of guards win the battle by getting into the water and using her magic to create a miniature hurricane that destroyed the pirate vessel and left the criminals on board too dazed to fight arrest.

Despite the terror she endured as a captive, the help she got from the Equestrians helped plant the seeds that encourage Maui to try and establish more formal connections with them. Previous attempts had been tried to be fair, but The Shroud was too powerful for many to break for even a moment; though Maui has been corresponding with Princess Celestia ever since her coronation on finding a way to do so.

Trivia:

-While she is distantly related to both Queen Amatheia Sairíne and Regeant Li'ban, founder of Mako and her successor, Maui gained the title after being chosen thanks to her gifted magical ability and leadership skills rather than blood relation.

-Due to duties as a royal, Maui has never had "shore leave" in years and it's been driving her bat-fishy. She also hasn't had that kind of shore leave in a long time either.

-The two guards who freed a young Maui from her cell were a young Shining Armor and Blueberry Frost, the mission to free her being one of Stalwart Sentry's last as Captain of the Guard before he retired.

-Her name comes from the Maui Dolphin, whose coloration she resembles.

-Queen Maui's ideal is to create a guard-able hole in The Shroud, rather than outright dismantle is. The Shroud still is an important part of Mako and the ocean is a dangerous place for a mermare. Sea dragons lusting for treasure or criminals lusting for what gifts her kind has (or her kind in general) do necessitate the protection remaining.

Eno

"Eee-no ee-no!"

Stats:
Species: Unknown type of evolved theropod dinosaur
Height: 1.5 meters at the hip
Weight: Roughly 140 kilograms
Length: 4.5 meters
Connections:
Two other dinosaurs- Rival species, enemies
Dr. Paleo Search - Met previously
Maia Heart Search - Thinks she smells familiar
Sunflower Orange - Thinks she's made of fruit
Location: Equestria Girls Realm, Lost Land Isle, Abandoned Miner Village
Temperment: Docile towards humans, or at least doesn't consider them food. How smart he is exactly is unknown, but so far he's demonstrated a concept of ownership by trying and later succeeding in returning Maia's necklace.
Traits: Covered from head to heel in feathers of various types, mostly emu-like projections on his body, fanned feathered on his arms, head, and tail, and downy fluff on the underbelly. Scales ranging from small scutes like those found on the feet of birds to tiny pebble-like scales are found on his hands, feet, and snout tip. 10cm long claws on each finger, including an opposable thumb. The claws on the feet are 8-10cm long, with a scythe-shaped 17cm talon on the innermost toe. Gives off a blue eyeshine at night.

Bio:

Eno emerged into the Equestrial Girls world when an earthquake opened up a cavern within the badlands. Chased by two of a rival species, he fled into the forest and ended up taking refuge in an abandoned worker village once used by a mining company. He did so because his pursuers never got close to human structures, thus it was safe. At the same time however, a young woman by the name of Maia Heart Search was going through her missing father's old notebooks and found a sketch of a strange kind of "bird". After encountering Eno himself on accident, she'd realize he was the same entity her father sketched right before he disappeared. What she didn't know was Eno's attackers were stalking her as well, forcing Eno to use some clever tactics to knock them into the river. Safe for the time being, he's since made himself at home in the general goods store of the village, making a nest out of the old pillows and mattresses and eating MREs kept on the shelves. Just what Eno is, where he came from, and how Maia's father knew him is still unknown. One thing is for sure however, whatever Eno; is he is smart. Extremely smart.

Trivia:

-Like crocodilians and birds, Eno can't move his eyes in their sockets and instead has to tilt his head back and forth to look around.

-One can tell his mood based off his feather crest, which lays flat when calm or curious and flicks up when confused or startled. When trying to look bigger he'll puff out or bristle all his feathers at once. These same feathers are why he's frequently mistaken for a big flightless bird, as from a distance he looks very unlike the typical perception of dinosaurs.

-His teeth are very sharp but sport over-sized serrations good for rending through tough plants, suggesting he's omnivorous but hails from a carnivorous species.

-His "name" as Paleo Search and his daughter came to call him by comes from a short barking sound he often makes. This is far from the only noise can produce however, ranging from squawks, to shrieks, hisses, and chirps.

Great Bios as usual.

Love the amazing biographies, especially liked the trivia section of Maui and how she is strong willed enough to become queen and wish for her kind and Equestria to become closer despite having been a pirate prisoner in her childhood.

Awesome! :rainbowdetermined2:

What can i say expect your welcome~
For the sun, the sky, and the breeze~
I'm sailing away away, your welcome~

I can't let it go, let it gooooooo!:trollestia:

Also i know Eno is related to the Troodon family, and i suspect our "diggers" are carnosaurs, primarily Allosaurus.

P.S. did you get my earlier comment on your profile?

Wow, Queen Maui has a lot of hair. Is that like a thing with royals? They all have to contractually have really long hair? Or is that even hair, with a merepony, or is it just a really wavy, shiny head fin thingie?

4544818 I'd have to say relatively normal by Mermare standards.

Hmmm... not sure if troodontid or velociraptorine...

still love the designs, as i told Faith.

4544912 Most likely a Troodontid.

Google Troodon teeth and you'll find a picture of one almost identical to what Tarb showed us earlier.

4544989 I'm aware, i just like idle speculation:twilightsmile:

4544996 It's hardly speculation when the answers are obvious.

4545011 true, but Eno is listed as an "Unknown type of evolved theropod dinosaur", and while his teeth point to a troodontid origin, it's also a possible case of convergent evolution, similar to the terrestrial crocodilians Paleo Search mentioned in his field notes which evolved teeth near-identical to the larger carnivorous theropods. I'm also reminded of the minor confusion caused by the teeth of the Eocene crocodilian Pristichampsus, which caused some paleontologists to believe that some non-avian dinosaurs had survived the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event.

And may i just say that i am enjoying this discussion:twilightsmile:

4545020 That may possibly be so, but there's nothing that i know of in his design or behavior that would disprove me.

Though i wonder if those other two are Allosaurs, Saurophaganax, or perhaps Acrocanthosaurus?(that last one is a bit of a stretch but considering the EG realm is possibly a version of NA, I'm going off of species of carnosaur that have lived in that continent)

Maybe DakotaRaptors? :applejackunsure:

4545021 the other two dinosaurs are... well, I don't want to give spoilers, it depends on how much this is based on the original show.

If we're going by what was in the original Dinosapien show, they're odd ornithischian dinosaurs known as "diggers", resembling a mix of ankylosaur and pachycephalosaurid, with fangs similar to those of a heterodontosaurid. They're mostly subterranean/nocturnal, with sensitive eyes.

Also, looking through the comments on the original artwork on deviantart. Someone was excited because "a dromaeosaur", to which Tarb replied he wasn't, so that clears it up.

And poor Saurophagonax. Until clear evidence comes up, it will always have the tagline "possibly a large Allosaurus"

4545026 He said Eno wasn't a Dromeosaur but he didn't necessarily rule the genus out for the other two.

I don't think it'll be like the original because biologically it makes little sense, and from what little i can remember of their brief description here, it doesn't sound like herbivores.

4545033 I was speaking specifically about Eno, and i suppose we'll simply have to wait and see for the other two. After all, Eno looks a LOT better here than he did in the show

tn.i.uol.com.br/capas/dinosapien-capa.jpg

That said, herbivores can be surprisingly aggressive.

4545034 You know, i just realized that he could have some relation to the small feathered dinosaurs like the ones found in Asia(whose names i can't properly spell)!

I'm aware of how aggressive some herbivores can be but i don't see them behaving like active predators.

4545037 Anchiornis, Mei long, Sinornithosaurus? all troodontids, last i heard (and i'll admit i'm a little behind on paleontology debates. The last new one i was aware of was some controversy over whether the Sauropodomorphs should be included with dinosaurs proper or be considered a sister branch)

Yeah, they acted like that in the show too, and i think it was stated that their diet consisted of insects and fungi. It was odd, but i was reminded of an old (and defunct) theory about ankylosaurids possibly being giant insectivores. They were basically there so the show could have some obvious villains

4545040 Damn, my paleontological knowledge has grown old.:fluttershyouch::facehoof:

4545041 to be more fair, the last i heard before that was about the discovery of Wiehenvenator, and before that it was how Brontosaurus is a valid genus again, and before that it was the debate over the quadrupedal Spinosaurus, and all this is fairly old news.

4545040
4545041

Bravo to the discussion you two! I will say one thing. At some point on the conversation, both groups that at the ancestors of Eno and his adversaries species were mentioned; along with ones that aren't either. Eno and the other two dinosaurs are in the same taxonomic clade, but not the same taxonomic family. While we did keep Eno's design to have hallmarks of the original, with similar coloration but given an updated feather coat and build to both be more accurate as well as reflect his ancestor a bit more; the same is not true with the enemy dinosaurs. While herbivores can be dangerous, the Digger stand-ins are not nor do they look like the show monsters. Namely, they're carnivorous. There is a big hint as to what kind of dinosaur they are (convergent evolution possibilities aside) in the first chapter when we get mention of something Eno has vs. what they have.

Also, yes most mermares have very long "hair"/head fins.

4545044 Thanks for the input and the compliment! this'll give me something to wrack my brain over.

And may i once again say i love how much thought you put into these, and the effort Faith puts into the artwork:twilightsmile:

4545043 Honestly, it's hard to keep track of every little tidbit of news in the scientific community and I've been distracted by other things. Much as i enjoyed our short discussion, i gotta turn in for the night. :ajsleepy:

4545044 Ha! Knew it that they're carnivores, but I'll have to wait on whether or not they're Carnosaurs.

4545047 same here. It's always nice to have a good discussion, goodnight!

4545047 reading over the first chapter, it seems more like the Digger stand-ins are dromaeosaurids, considering they attempt to climb a tree after Eno. At the very least, they aren't as gracile as Eno, considering their combined weight was too much for said tree

4545394 probably not the exact species, but something along the lines of Utahraptor or Dakotaraptor.

Personally, my bet's on them being more like Dakotaraptor due to the geographic timeline. Dakotaraptor's the more recent species. Utahraptor is known from the Barremian stage of the early Cretaceous, while Dakotaraptor's from the Maastrichtian age, right up to the end of the Cretaceous.

Of course, this is just speculation, since Eno's a Troodontid, and Troodon itself is only known definitively from the Campanian age of the Cretaceous period (about 77 mya), with only possible additional species known from later periods. (again, my knowledge may be outdated)

4545430 Looking back on chapter 1, i think i may have called it with DakotaRaptor.

You mentioned that they weren't as gracile due to their combined weight breaking the tree, but Eno mentioned that it was barely holding his weight and it would've eventually fallen regardless of the two, i think this tells us that the diggers here aren't that much bigger than Eno.

Along with the fact that they have sickle claws on the inner toes which is characteristic of Dromeosaurs, this does hint at DakotaRaptor(which is a smaller and more lean version of UtahRaptor yet it's larger than the Asian branch of the family).

4545438 all good and valid points, and all of which i agree with.

4545443 Though there is that odd ability to mimic human vocalizations, and i remember Asia and North America were once connected so i wonder if some of the Asian Dromeosaurs migrated to NA?

But then again, this is the EG realm so i know hardly anything about the geography aside from guessing.

4545447 Paleo Search's Field Notes mention South America and Australia, as well as the Mesozoic continent of Gondwana, so i'm fairly confident the geography matches fairly closely to real geography. After all, there's the theory that Tyrannosaurines were migrants from Asia that moved to North America, eventually displacing the more gracile Albertasaurines

4545457 SA and Australia?

Hmm perhaps we're looking in the wrong continent? :applejackunsure::rainbowderp:

4545466 oh, he mentioned them because he was comparing the tooth to the crocodilians from that area.

There were some type of terrestrial crocodiles in former Gondwana continents like South America and Australia developed serrated teeth for hunting on land, some of which had teeth that looked almost identical to those of theropod dinosaurs. But none of them have ever been found in North America, let alone in the ice age. This is impossible, and yet I'm holding it in my hand.

4545470 Hmm Crocodilians?

Could be making a case of convergent evolution(it has happened before) but maybe it also hints at the genus ancestry of our diggers?

4545478 I'm still gonna say the Digger stand-ins are probably dromaeosaurids of some kind. the mimicking ability is what makes the theory feasible for me.

much as i'd like to continue this discussion now, sadly i have other things to attend to. chores mostly. I hope to continue this later.

Oh, and thanks for the follow!

4545486 Our most likely candidate is a Dromeosaur, particularly DakotaRaptor.

Though i remember a while back reading a news article on a discovery in Australia, a theropod that was larger than Australovenator, hadn't been given a scientific name as far as i know but it was given the moniker of Lightning Claw or something along those lines(was suspected to be a distant relative of Allosaurus if i remember correctly).

Thank you too for the follow. :raritywink:

4545491 If the digger-expies aren't larger than Eno, they're definitely heavier, which again points to them being Dromaeosaurs.

all in all, the most likely candidate is a Dakotaraptor-like dromaeosaur, with two less likely options being some kind of robust troodontid or (even less likely) some type of oviraptorid

4545565 Funny, i never considered Oviraptor. :rainbowlaugh:

Though on the other hand, what do you think will be Maui's role in the Mako incident?

4545586 no idea. and to be honest it's been a while since i read the Bridge

4545591 Well Tarb is hinting that she may be suffering from wanderlust and sexual frustration so perhaps she may put a few moves on Junior and some questions of Equestria and Terra, not much more than that.

4545599 obviously. It'll be kind of funny.

4545600 Maybe Tarb will never tell us what happened at Mako, to screw with us that way. :trollestia:

4545604 It's not screwing with us, it's a legitimate literary device which is used to leave it up to speculation and make the readers think, such as the exact circumstances of a "Noodle Incident"

4545608 I know, am only joking.

4545610 Though it would be hilarious if he hyped us all up and denied us at the last minute! :pinkiecrazy::rainbowlaugh:

4545626 let's be honest, Junior's been pretty blunt with the ladies so far.

4545645 Which considering Mako is a World of Ham, may work against him.

So when's Eno gonna play a part in The Bridge proper?
