State of the Writer, April 2024!

    It's another boring one! I ain't wrote nothin'! :B

It actually feels lately like I've been crawling out of a pit? So maybe there's a light ahead? But it's also blocked by Balatro lol somepony save me D:

The only other thing relevant to this blog is that I've had notes for a vs. post sitting in my notes document for probably the entire month now, what is wrong with me? D:

Fic recs, April 22nd: Jordan179 edition

Once again, though a good bit late, I bring it upon myself to memorialize an author via reviews of their stories. Though this time, it's different, as I had no connection to Jordan179 and only learned of his passing (three years ago this month, coincidentally), from this post

Another post about video games and Youtube and stuff

If I'm going to waste time watching shit on Youtube, the least I can do is tell people about it. :P

Ceave is a crazy Austrian with a love of video games and a head for philosophizing about them. Plus he really, really hates coins, no matter how tasty they may look.

Do you like video games? How about philosophy?

I like one of those things for sure, but no one combines the two better than a Youtuber named InfernalRamblings, a former professional game developer who now creates hour and a half long video essays about the meanings of video games and how they relate to the world today. Here's a few highlights, since this is now basically my only

Unicorn Drivers, No Survivors [episode spoilers!] · 6:28pm Apr 22nd, 2017

Just a quick reminder, I no longer can watch pony on TV, so instead of my usual "re-reaction to previous episodes" intro to these posts, I am posting in the middle of the week. Look for blogs titled "Pipe Land" to see what I think of episodes on a second watch-through! (Spoilers: that one, at least, is more positive than my original first take on either!)

As for this week, well, my prediction that All Bottled Up might herald a season of entertaining slice of life episodes seems to hold true.

I was nursing a shot of Buckshot Whiskey while watching this episode (spoilers: it's awful, don't drink it), so I might not be able to say whether this episode was good or not. But I definitely enjoyed it. Maybe not as exciting as ABU, lacking the shipping angle and all (though Poneo and Fillyet is totally canon now, gj Aegle), but definitely fun for all that it was, as I put it, "Just a pile of words."

I loved Shining Armor in the season 6 premiere, and it turns out, I love Beleaguered Parent!Cadence just as much.

Oh yeah, I'm kind of drunk now, this may be less than coherent. Is it just what I watched this episode on, or was the animation kind of, I dunno, jerky? Odd somehow?

So Twilight trying to be the bae Best Aunt Ever! is a pretty standard "Twilight being dumb" trope for her. Flurry, with her god-tier magic powers and foalish lack of self-control, turns out to be a good foil for her. Most of the madcap sitcom-style gags at least had one thing going for them that made me laugh. And when they didn't? Putting words in a baby's mouth is always funny.

The art show was amusing, thanks entirely to Spearhead. (Oh god, the gag about all the guards having similar names. So good!) My friend recommends shipping him with Tree Hugger. I approve, though TreeBreeze remains superior.

OKAY BUT SHE READ A STORYBOOK ABOUT GUSTY FIGHTING GROGAR I CANNOT EVEN

NO SERIOUSLY THIS GETS TWO LINES SHE WAS LITERALLY READING ABOUT G1 THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST REFERENCES EVER I AM SO HAPPY

Ugh man what else happened. We're watching some kind of review of Party of One and Lesson Zero and today's episode is fading away from my mind already. It's with no amount of malice that I say Flurry of Emotions is ultimately substanceless; it was a good time, and again, if season seven is just this kind of episode, consistently entertaining if ultimately vapid, it will at least be better than season six. :B I guess that's it.

OH YES AND PONY LATIN, THAT IS A THING NOW

I think we answered the corollary: Where the crap was Starlight?

Frequently not in episodes otherwise featuring Twilight. :B It's a good place for her to be.

What am I saying, the real answer is "Trixie's trailer, making it rock". :V

4506117

Notice this might be both figurative and literal: I suspect that this episode is best positioned in the timeline sometime during the fabled, but never observed Trixie’s apology tour where Starlight would have to accompany her…

I am understandably jazzed about this episode and I can't wait for more :pinkiehappy:

All That:

Art show stuff can only mean that the writing staff is reading Bad Horse's blog. :scootangel:

Mike

Best Aunt Ever = Twilight is BAE. There is no way I am accepting that as a coincidence.

I hate babies. That I didn't hate this episode is probably a testament to its charm.

4506117 If I was Sunburst, that rockin' trailer is exactly where I'd be.

Two really important things happened at the toy store.

1) Huge front-and-center shot of Carrot Top. Chris will be so happy. She even got another appearance earlier on.

2) Right after that, when Flurry Heart knocked down the pile of stuffed animals, Twilight rushed over. Who was standing right there? Bon Bon and Lyra! Best friends. Why was Flurry Heart the only kid in a toy store? All those adults going around. Carrot Top, Cherry Berry. I wonder if Bon Bon and Lyra mistakenly went in the wrong type of toy store. :B Either that, or Lyra was buying materials for her own ball pit. That way, the debacle shown in that comic strip won't happen again. You know the one.

Step away from the whisky it's making you talk in all capes.

MORE GENERALLY WHY DON"T THEY HAVE PEOPLE? NOT IN THE META_SENSE< WHICH IS OBVIOUS< IN THE IN_UNIVERSE SENSE>

DON"T RULING ROYALTY NORMALLY HAVE PEOPLE FOR THINGS?

In some ways frustrating, but that's the way it was set up. Funny, sometimes cute. Spike was great again. Taking none of this shit. :D Pinkie was at about the right level, and incorporated well.

Oh, they should figure out a way to have Spike do letters to Cadence (and Luna) as well as Celestia. That's another lesson of the day. Or actually use mail instead of having Shining and Cadence show up as a surprise half the time. :V

I've been waiting for Grogar to make his big comeback, like Tirek did. I guess this was good too, but still... :ajsleepy:

Was a surpisingly good episode for threatining to be a rehash of baby cakes. We can't even be mad about twilight being dumb, because she's never been dumb about being an aunt before! And she was doing a great job otherwise of being a princess.

There were a ton of funny gags in this one, too. Who would have predicted ahead of time this would be an episode we'd want to rewatch?

I can't say no to this.

4506917
If the writers put in some effort (a hard request, I know), they could easily get a whole episode's worth of comedy out of Spike trying to fine-tune his new ability to send letters to more than one princess.

4506954
Like FOME said, it could always be foreshadowing, but I'm not holding my breath. :B
