Ya know, I think she really benefited from starting out as a bad guy/antagonist, where character design goes: the high saturation, high contrast thing seems harder to pull off for an MLP good guy (except Spike, and he's a different species--no not the same as human/pony difference). Even Rainbow has the cool pale blue body, where Sunset's, though less saturated than her hair colors, is accentuated by them rather than being offset.

4370906 She was sixteen when Twilight was six. She entered Canterlot High when the humane five were freshmen. Assuming they're seniors now, Shimmer is at least 19, and should be more like 26-28 in Equestria.
