Insanity of the day: Chinese elementary-school kids scale mountain to get to school · 2:44am May 31st, 2016

It's Memorial Day, but I have no Memorial Day-related thoughts, other than playing hippie anti-war songs on the radio on Memorial Day is insulting the war dead, not honoring them. For f**k's sake.

Grumpy old men around the world recollecting walking uphill to school through the snow were upstaged this week by these cute Chinese school-kids who AIEEEE I CAN'T LOOK!!!

That video doesn't even show how terrifying it is, because the camera can't pull far back enough to show you that the cliff these little kids are climbing is a half a mile sheer vertical drop.

This video does. Look at the section starting 22 seconds in:

I don't know how good the school is, but I bet these kids do their homework. See The Guardian for more information.

I was thinking of putting this place on my bucket list.

Then they mentioned that you will lose your life if you're distracted, and I put it at the bottom of the list.

And yet, I can't help but think that a school's proper location would be at the *bottom* of the mountain, next to the village.

3985148 The school is at the bottom and the village is at the top. The kids go down to get to school, and up to get back home.

3985144 Yes, a trip up that trail should conclude your bucket list nicely.

3985171 One way or the other.

Wow. I mean that's really all I have to say. Wow. And American kids complain about education

Wait, at 0:46 in the second video... they're scaling a wall without handles? With a foot ledge that's literally the width of their feet?

Also, insert snipe about safe spaces in educational institutions here.

Holy bejeezus. When these kids turn into crotchety, cantankerous "in my day..." types in their old age, they'll be the exceptional few who have well and truly earned the right.

You sure don't want to become a dropout! :pinkiegasp:

3985195 Stop being so critical! They're perfectly safe. There's a rope in the wall that will probably hold, secured by iron hooks that probably won't come out this time.

The actual reason for this is that the village is both on top of the cliff AND on the bottom of the cliff. There are people who live in both places, and there are less than 100 villagers in total. Makes sense to build one school and for all the kids to go for it; they probably don't have the money to build/support two schools locally.

On the other hand, they have to climb a 100 plus meter tall cliff to go to and from school, which seems mildly insane.

Jeez.
Like... jeez.
Having absent students must be a lot more ominous.

The real question is: Why did they build the village in both places to begin with? I assume it must have made sense at the time, but...

Some people probably work on top of the cliff, some probably work on the bottom of the cliff.

"Pah! But they don't have to do it every day, now do they?" :trixieshiftright:

Actually...
1:06: "villagers are very worried about their children who study at the foot of the cliff"

The school is located at the bottom. It's the village that's at the top. Still means they need to climb up to go back home though :unsuresweetie:

They seem happy.

Did Google put us in the same shard?
Astonishing new footage shows gorilla PROTECTING child and ...

Something or another about Peter Thiel ...

And when they come home at the end of the day, does dad KILL 'em and DANCE ON THEIR GRAVES?

(I'm sorry, Mr. Cleese: I'll never do that again)

This is horrible, but I did appreciate the bit of lighthearted comedy in the Guardian article that balanced it out. Eradicating all poverty in China by 2020. Oh, that President Jinping.

3985679 'Shine on, you crazy diamond' is all I could think.

You kidding me? It's killer location. Pun not intended... :pinkiecrazy:
To think I have to take a week of holiday leave and travel through half of my country to be able to do some hiking myself. :facehoof: Goddamn plains...

Yeah, but they only have to go uphill ONE way. :pinkiecrazy:

OTOH, it looks like the graduates would have good qualifications for scaffolding work on high rise construction. These kids might give the Mohawk construction workers a run for their money.
