Friendship is Card Games: Kenbucky Roller Derby #2 & #3

We return to the cutthroat world of G5 roller derby, where Sunny’s trying her darndest to prove she’s more than just a casual skater… and has assembled one of the most ragtag teams of misfits this side of the Mighty Ducks in the process. Let’s see how the story’s developed from there.

    Swan Song

No, not mine. The Barcast's. The last call is currently under way, and if you want to hear my part in the grand interview lightning round, you can tune in at 4:20 Eastern/1:20 Pacific (about an hour from this posting.)

Yes, 4:20 on 4/20. No, I do not partake. Sorry to disappoint. :derpytongue2:

    Pest List

Just something I whipped together for fun one day, set to a possibly recognizable tune, all intended in good fun. And hey, given that I derived my Fimfic handle from a misremembered detail of the Mikado, it's only appropriate. :derpytongue2:

Friendship is Card Games: d20 Pony, Ch. 9, Pt. 1

Goodness, it’s been almost two years since I last checked in on Trailblazer’s adventures. IDW putting out comics almost as quickly as I could review them will do that, especially given all of the G5 video media coming out concurrently.

Friendship is Card Games: Slice of Life · 12:48pm Jun 14th, 2015

I’m sure you’ve all been inundated with opinions by this point, but I keep to a schedule. In any case, it is at last time for M. A. Larson’s bizarre thank you to us for helping make this the longest running twenty-two-minute toy commercial in television history.

I have to appreciate the irony of, after two weeks of no new pony, having an episode where the plot hinges on something happening earlier than expected.

I know they never would’ve done it, but an alternate theme song would’ve nice.

Derpy appears to be more UPS than USPS, considering how she was undercutting another delivery service. (Also, if anypony is to blame for the misprinted invitations, it’s Featherweight. Dang it, pony Peter Parker…)

I quite like the Doctor’s backstory and his Technological Advancement and Research Dedicated to Investigating Science. (Credit goes to Mr. Horrible for that one.) Honestly, he seems very shippable with Twilight at this point, especially since her lab is now a chandelier. And it’s not like he had much chemistry with Derpy. Unlike a certain pair of best friends, they really do just seem like friends to me.
And, of course, there’s the matter of the Doctor’s centuries of research. It could mean standing on the withers of giants, or it could mean that extreme earth pony longevity is a thing and Granny Smith really is hundreds of years old.

The Doctor traces a circle during the Vinylvision interlude. I have to assume he worked in the wibbly-wobbly model of time into the conversation. One of the more subtle jokes of the episode.

The Dude’s cutie mark is a rug. I think it really ties his character design together.

Sweetie Belle’s meta-awareness amuses me on many levels, as does Octavia’s melodrama.

I was half-right. It was Bonbon who was the secret agent! Who would’ve guessed? Of course, that’s exactly what she wanted us to think. Also, both secret agencies and Celestia’s skill at cover-ups are confirmed. My headcanon is fairly happy with this episode.
And yeah, between the body language and the lovers’ spat, the “best friend” thing feels like the writers protesting too much. Just my opinion; that ship went all Schrodingerian. It both did and didn’t sink, depending on the observer.

Steven Magnet is the worst sassy gay friend ever. I’m sure he was an invaluable adventuring partner, but that is not what you say to a bride on her wedding day. Still, he did come through in the end.

And then Vinyl and Octavia living together was canon. Can’t say I saw that coming, though I do love how they act as creative catalysts for one another. Also, literal shark jumping. It’s nice to see them acknowledging just how ridiculous that whole sequence was. Don’t get me wrong, I loved it, but it was still ridiculous.

I loved the diarchial sibling spat. I can’t help but suspect that Luna was busy making sure the wedding gift was perfect when the changelings attacked.

They really overplayed the Doctor’s catchphrase. And that allons’y was as gratuitous as the Song of Ice and Fire reference in “Tanks for the Memories.” Just the scarf was enough, really.

Derpy didn’t just make up for her mistake, she accidentally made the situation even better than she expected. Fantastic.

Best pony is credited as “Muffins.” I’m okay with that. Many are her names in many countries, Ditzy Doo among the elves, Derpy Hooves mong the dwarves; Stoneface she was in her youth in the west that is forgotten, in the south Bright Eyes, in the north Muffins; to the east she goes not.

One of the many ways this is a love letter to the fandom is the sheer number of story hooks to work with in this episode:
• What was the traumatic experience that put the Doctor on the path of science?
• Where did the Dude pick up the word “man”?
• If Sparkler/Amethyst Star was Ponyville’s best pre-Twilight organizer, how did Winter Wrap-Up still never get done on time?
• What kind of adventures did Steven Magnet and Cranky have?
• What other assignments did secret agent Sweetie Drops carry out?
• What kind of evils did the bugbear do to get sent to Tartarus?
• How long have Vinyl and Octavia been collaborating?
• Has Gummy determined the meaning of life?
• What were Celestia and Luna going to bring as a gift? Furthermore, what’s so special about Cranky and Matilda that every alicorn in existence RSVP’d?
• What was that changeling doing at the wedding?

So yeah, the episode was sometimes a bit too random for its own good, but overall, I loved it. Now then…

My personal theory is that Cranky was in the same business as Bonbon.

Honestly, he seems very shippable with Twilight at this point, especially since her lab is now a chandelier.

Well, there's a sentence I never thought I'd read...

Wubbernaut

:rainbowwild:

JUST. FRIENDS.

Is it bad that I think Luna's bit was the best thing she's done since season 3?

Note that "best organizer in Ponyville" =/= "good organizer".

Gummy's voice was... weird, and almost frightening :twilightoops: I kinda worry he's planning to murder everyone now.

I loved the changeling. Especially since it seemed to be a child changeling, sitting in the children's section... Since when do weddings have childrens's sections anyway?

I missed the shark plush :facehoof: oy.

This was technically a Doctor Who/The Big Lebowsky crossover story, wasn't it? I imagine there are not very many of those.

I had a story idea about Tartarus before, that has been languishing in mental limbo since Tirek. It now has more fuel.

Ponyville Duplex
[...]
T: Add 1 to your mana pool.
T: Add one mana of either chosen color to your mana pool. Ponyville Duplex deals 1 damage to you.

Um, would you mind telling poor newbie me why those would be separate? As far as I can tell, the first (add 1 of any mana) is a superset of the second (add 1 of one of the two chosen mana, take 1 damage), so you'd never have cause to use the second. Unless something beyond my ken is happening...

You are awesome.

This is MUCH more pleasant than the last wedding I went to.

3148607
I do love the idea of adventurer Cranky. Secret agent Cranky is just icing on the cake.

3148624
But it's true! And while I know that there are many names for Vinyl's mobile speakers, that is what it is called in my heart.

3148674
At least no one said they were cousins.

It is nice to see Luna outside of the "wise dream guide" context. She does good work there, but having her let her hair down is nice. Especially when Celestia's in the wrong for once.

Very good point about best ≠ good.

Pets come to resemble their owners. Is it any surprise that Pinkie's is a disturbing font of cosmic wisdom?

I'm honestly not sure if having a kids' section at weddings is a good idea or a horrible one. And the fact that the changeling is a nymph only adds further questions.

I don't think they could've animated that in good conscience without including the plushie.

Well, Sam Elliot may have hitched a ride on the TARDIS to get to modern California...

And hooray for stories from pony hell!

3148693
The first ability adds colorless mana to your mana pool. You can't spend it to meet color requirements. (For example, you couldn't use it to help pay the mana cost of Gummy's Insight.)

3148715
"You cannot pass. I am a servant of the Secret Bubble, wielder of the foam of Anor. You cannot pass. The dark bubble will not avail you, foam of Udûn. Go back to the Shadow! You cannot pass."

3148770 Ah, colourless, not any colour. That explains a lot :rainbowwild:

Apology Basket's flavortext made my day. Or, at least, it would have, but RYU IS IN SMASH BROS OHMYGODYOUGUYS.

The Dude’s cutie mark is a rug. I think it really ties his character design together.

Eh. Should have been a White Russian, IMO, but they very well can't do that, for obvious reasons.

You're in a league of your own, my friend. And it's one that needs its own fandom, stat :raritywink: Seriously, you're a genius.

Target player shuffle all cards from his or her library into his or her graveyard, then put that many cards from the top of that library into that graveyard.

The way this read right now you mill your library then you mill from an empty library.

3148872

*stares at the screen*

Huh. Damn. Can't believe they actually did that.

Wait, so Equestrian bugbears are what they sound like, instead of just bigger goblins? I am OK with this

So, remember that rule where the writers weren't allowed to read fanfic to avoid polluting the series? I think they broke that rule. (So much fanservice)

I was not expecting them to suddenly decide that Bonbon was a secret agent. I guess that's canon now? Not Lyra, Bonbon. (Also, there is no way those two are not a couple).

Seriously, they made one of the background characters a secret agent. This is a thing that is canon now. WTF.

So I've got a new headcanon: Vinyl scratch isn't blind like some people thought before--she's *mute*. That disability is what got her so interested in making loud, attention-hogging (potentially even obnoxious) music. She's mutely saved the day in EG2, and now this one.

I'm not sure which was more gratuitous: The Doctor describing his love of science and shoving in his catchphrase at the end, or Gummy's soliloquy. Probably the latter, because it had no relation to the plot and didn't really make much sense.

Why is the Twilight Scepter back?

Is it me, or did Sparkler not actually do anything? It looked more like Vinyl accidentally organized the whole wedding.

Did you notice that the Doctor grabbed a pony named Rose for his exclamation at the end?

----

Worlds Apart: I love this for both the flavor and the effect. Potentially this could end the game shockingly fast (by white standards), if you have aggressive legendaries and they can't block them. (But I guess it's not like you couldn't just enchant the legendaries to be unblockable more reliably).

Crowd Blending: Another pretty cool one. Not very efficient even in the right deck, but very cool.

Anti-Monster Operative: Stick any aura on it and that is a shockingly powerful creature. It's invincible on defense and unblockable on offense, and has vigilance. Even without an aura it's good.

Gummy’s Insight: So powerful. You're playing blue, so you've got some instants in your hand, right? (Plus you might get to cast it on turn 2 anyways).

Countless Distractions: Mycosynth--Eh, screw it. That's perfectly viable in a normal artifact-heavy deck and balanced in eiither.

Neoclassical Remix: That is a weirdly narrow spell to be charging 3 mana for at sorcery speed.

Stallion of Science: Another card that looks very fun.

Apology Basket: Dat flavor text.

Stressor Serpent: Amusingly, he will always be available to block the targeted creature.

Impossible Vision: If I understand the priority rules correctly, you technically can't use this to force someone to discard immediately after their draw step. So what's it for? I'm not sure I could ever see myself paying that much for such a small discard effect, especially since discard generally isn't scared of counterspells. (Also, I'm not sure where this fits into the episode.)

Insistent Repetition: Actually a very cool variation on Reverberate. Speaking of, you totally need a reprint of Reverberate in your pony set thanks to all the music theme.

Amateur Laboratory: Quick, spend all your cards! You're not spending your cards fast enough!

Wubbernaut: Cute. Kinda weak, but cute.

Klutzy Atoner: Stupdendously powerful if you flicker it. For one thing, if you have two copies of Flicker or Momentary Blink this reads "1W: Destroy target noncreature permanent". Your opponent will have no lands two turns from now.

3148836
Moreso in that it is a call back to Reparations flavor text.

• If Sparkler/Amethyst Star was Ponyville’s best pre-Twilight organizer, how did Winter Wrap-Up still never get done on time?

Off the top of my head: Mayor Mare's worries about being eclipsed predate Twilight's ascension. Even though Sparkler was always a far better organizer, the Mayor insisted on trying to organize Winter Wrap-Up as a sign that she could manage it, she could run an event, she could organize! ...and it crushed her spirit every time Wrap-Up failed. Sparkler did her best with her team, but there was only so much she could do.

What was that changeling doing at the wedding?

That is actually the story hook I was most interested in seeing used when I saw the episode. My guess is he's a former adventuring buddy of Cranky's. That, or changelings can feed on ambient love energy when there's enough around, and he's just there for the buffet.

Your point on the Equestrian monster hunting agency makes me want to make a fusion crossover with Monster Hunter International.

"Most ponies do one of two things when they encounter a monster: they act like prey animals and freeze or flee..." Bon Bon said before pausing for dramatic effect. "Or they become national heroes. You didn't do either of those things. Do you know why?"

My eyes wandered a little farther from center as I looked for a good answer. I think I found one.

"If I froze up and got eaten, who would take care of Dinky? If I flew away, then somepony else would have gotten eaten. As for being a national hero..." I roll my eyes in opposite directions. "I just don't think I have the face for it."

"Celestia could use ponies who think like that," she said with a subtle smirk. "Ponies in general are peaceful creatures and creatures of habit. They prefer to ignore things like monster attacks that keep them from peace and their usual habits.

"How would you like to be a part of making that possible?"

Steven Magnet/Dumb Bell confirmed.
Roid Rage
Snowflake

Unlike a certain pair of best friends, they really do just seem like friends to me.

and 3148674
My roomate, who is not a brony and is not really into FiM, watched this ep with me today and every time Lyra and BonBon interacted with one another is an, ahem, overly familiar fashion, I paused the video and said "Just friends!" to him.
And of course I explained to him why I was doing that.

• If Sparkler/Amethyst Star was Ponyville’s best pre-Twilight organizer, how did Winter Wrap-Up still never get done on time?

My theory on that is that Sparkler was never in Ponyville for winter wrap up but instead spends the winter in either Canterlot (because it's close and that's the 'go to' city when you need someone out of Ponyville for plot reasons) or some other town with extended family.
Unless we saw here at some point in that ep, it's been a while and I don't remember if she was there or not. If she WAS there then 3149036 has a good idea about that.

Onto the cards!

I so want Gummy’s Insight, so bad. It's a great card for your "draw-go" style of blue deck. The Sorcery speed makes it slightly worse but plus two cards for the low cost of two mana is great for that sort of deck. And you really don't cast much on your own turn.

Neoclassical Remix should read "then puts that" ala Living Death and the like. Also an interesting way of dealing with a Dredge deck that's gotten set up.

On Apology Basket; At least they didn't shell the village.

On Time Shift; This seems a bit expensive to me. Time Stop is only one colorless mana more and that straight up ends the turn. I do understand that being able to end a phase anytime you wish is powerful but I think it would be fine at 2UU.
I'm not sure, this is an ability we've never seen before and just how much it should be coasted is iffy, but 3UU seems a bit much when 4UU can end all the phases.

What scene is Impossible Vision based on? Also, slightly expensive for a two cards discard, even with Split Second. I'd say maybe 4B, or 3BB.

My first though on Amateur Laboratory was "It's a better Howling Mine!" but when I was getting the link for the Mine I was reminded it was 2 not 3. Still, the Laboratory is a good cards for decks that empty out their hands fast.

Pair Flameless Fireworks with Grove of the Burnwillows, it's thematic! Well, maybe not, but still fun.

Wubbernaut, just, Wubbernaut. No words.

I don't really see why Rampaging Bugbear is blue other than to give it flying. Red does get flying, mostly only for dragons and phoenixes yes, but Red fits better from the way it was acting (all the anger). It could also be black, have a look at this. Black gets flying AND insects.
Blue just doesn't fit this creature to me.

3148977

Why is the Twilight Scepter back?

I was asking the same thing myself.

From the comprehensive rules

116.3a The active player receives priority at the beginning of most steps and phases, after any turn-based actions (such as drawing a card during the draw step; see rule 703) have been dealt with and abilities that trigger at the beginning of that phase or step have been put on the stack. No player receives priority during the untap step. Players usually don’t get priority during the cleanup step (see rule 514.3).

Emphasis added by me.
So, after they draw their card they have priority, if they pass you then gain priority and can cast Impossible Vision before they move out of their draw step.

3149201 Sparkler was the leader of the animal team in Winter Wrap-Up.

3149701 Wasn't that Twinkleshine?

FoME: You have a typo in Worlds Apart. And did you consider making that legendary permanents, not just legendary creatures?

And, of course, there’s the matter of the Doctor’s centuries of research. It could mean standing on the withers of giants, or it could mean that extreme earth pony longevity is a thing and Granny Smith really is hundreds of years old.

Where in the episode is this?

How long have Vinyl and Octavia been collaborating?

I submitted an answer for how they started months ago.

… and I have a slowly building desire to add another chapter to my version of their escapades, possibly including a 'mares only' summer vacation summer vacation in Ponyville

3149777 Nope. I even checked the wiki.

In the episode Winter Wrap Up, she [Amethyst Star, aka Sparkler] is the leader of the animal team, but she also partakes in the ice-carving scene as part of the weather team.

Twinkleshine isn't in Winter Wrap-Up.

3149809 In the lab scene:

Dr. Hooves: My life's work, decades – centuries, really – of research and experimentation, and I nearly had it cracked! Turns out there's a magic spell for it. Who knew?

3149939 Ah, thanks. Must of missed that.

3148977

Seriously, they made one of the background characters a secret agent. This is a thing that is canon now. WTF.

We'll see just how canon that is in days to come. This episode felt... well, silver-bordered, to put it in card game terms. Technically compatible, but not meant to be taken seriously.

Vinyl's muteness does appear to be the case. On a Doylist level, many believe it's because there's a hugely popular fan voice actress for her, and any other voice in her mouth might lead to fan riots. Not sure if I buy that explanation, but for now, Bespectacled Bass Horse doesn't say anything.

Gummy's soliloquy made perfect sense to me, but Pinkie Pie has a permanent residence in my brain, so there we are. :pinkiecrazy:

Sparkler seemed to have arranged everything at Town Hall offscreen... unless that was all already in place. The episode hasn't the most coherent one at times.

Did you notice that the Doctor grabbed a pony named Rose for his exclamation at the end?

Yup. Remember, she was the one following him when he was seen during "It Ain't Easy Being Breezies."

3149036
Headcanon accepted. The Mayor never could accept that speeches do not a successful equinox make.

3149056
This is a thing of magnificence. There's a new group you may be interested in...

3149201
Time Shift: The problem with making effects that have never been done before is not having any guidelines on how to cost them. Still, bear in mind that this counters every spell and ability on the stack, even the uncounterable ones. And it exiles them.

Impossible Vision: There was a single frame, just as the Wubbernaut was impacting the Town Hall, of several members of the crew in horse masks. Literal case of "blink and you'll miss it."

Rampaging Bugbear: Black may get insects, but blue tends to get the bizarre hybrids, whether biomantic aberrations or Theran chimeras. Plus, it was smart enough to track down Bonbon.

3149777
I'm not seeing the typo. A little help? :applejackunsure:

3149923
Oh, sure, add more to my Read Later list, why don't you? :raritywink:

3150460 Nonlegendary cretures have protection from legendary creatures.

3149934 I checked, and you're right, Amethyst Star is the animal team leader.

But Twinkleshine is in the crowd, and on the animal team. (2:10)

3150531 Huh. Sorry. I must've missed it.

Gonna have to bookmark this post and come back here for readymade ideas for this coming Writeoff. :raritywink:

My new headcanon for why all four alicorns attended the wedding is that the entire world of Equestria is literally small enough that they can go to the wedding of everyone who asks nicely. If you're the princess of a kingdom that's only a few thousand ponies large, each wedding is a big deal. And let's face it, the map of Equestria that we've seen seems more like a small island than a continent.

Apparently Equestria is either a very tiny world, or the pony nation is their world's equivalent of Monaco.

3150448
I do not know what group you are talking about, and I most certainly did not join such a group, in the unlikely event that it existed. :derpytongue2:

It suddenly occurs to me to wonder why Discord wasn't at the wedding :applejackunsure: I guess Ponyville hasn't quite forgiven him for everything yet.

3150460
It's what I'm here to do :rainbowkiss:

3151043
Then again, remember who planned this wedding... Pinkie probably could've squeezed an RSVP out of Ms. Harshwhinny herself if she thought it'd up the fun factor

I'm helpful! :pinkiehappy:

And given that Cranky apparently befriended a sea serpent and traveled the land for years, he seems like an unsung hero of Equestria. I wouldn't be surprised if Celestia felt that this was the least she could do... which makes forgetting the wedding gift all the more embarrassing. (That being said, space seems as slippery as time when it comes to the pony world. Depending on the episode, the trip from Ponyville to Canterlot can take days or hours.)

I can certainly see most of the town being less willing to forgive him than the Mane Six were.

Sure. Best Friends. And while we're at it, the illustrious Michiru Kaioh and Haruka Tennoh are cousins.

Loving the Muffins the Grey soliloquy.

Haruka and Michiru? Of course not. Amara and Michelle? Obviously. They just went to get ice cream. And nothing else.
(Remember, kids, lesbianism is a-okay as long as it's also incest! Sailor Moon Says!)

Also:
"Muffins? Yes... That is what they used to call me. Muffins the Grey."

"I am Muffins the Pink. And I come back to you now, at the turning of the tide."

Ugh, work, so late in responding back... .

Time Shift: The problem with making effects that have never been done before is not having any guidelines on how to cost them. Still, bear in mind that this counters every spell and ability on the stack, even the uncounterable ones. And it exiles them.

Mindbreak Trap exiles only the spells you want exiled from the stack, leaving any of your own there. It does it for 2UU or maybe 0, depending on how things go.
But unknown effects are notoriously hard to cost, even to the actual Wizards R&D people. Ending ANY turn once at instant speed costs 4UU while ending your OWN TURN as many times as you want costs an investment of 2 and an activation of 1 {T}. Not even colored mana!
Being able to end any one phase on command one time could do nothing more than a Fog could or it could be a counter to any cards that couldn't normally be countered.
I'm denying that it's a powerful ability, I just don't think it's 3UU powerful.

Impossible Vision: There was a single frame, just as the Wubbernaut was impacting the Town Hall, of several members of the crew in horse masks. Literal case of "blink and you'll miss it."

Single frame images I have a hard time seeing at your normal frame-rate, I can normally spot something that's two frames long though.

Rampaging Bugbear: Black may get insects, but blue tends to get the bizarre hybrids, whether biomantic aberrations or Theran chimeras. Plus, it was smart enough to track down Bonbon.

Hum, yes, fair enough. I could totally see it tracking down Sweetie Drops and running into Pinkie Pie first. And that was why it was so angry.
Cause Pinkie Pie.
Color commentary withdrawn.

There's another question about Best Pony: "Which idiot will get in her face about accidentally locking them out and what insane lengths will she go to to make up for it?"

:derpyderp1: "Steven Magnet was leaning in an open window. Why didn't you just climb through that?"

3180539 I would read that fanfiction. Heck, I might go on my Deviantart account (pj202718) and write that fanfiction....with your permission, of course.

Go right ahead. Heck, you could even publish it here!

3180758 Okay, then. It's called "Open Windows and Closed Minds."
