'The Mare Behind the Mare' Inducted Into The Royal Canterlot Library

I'm honored and humbled to announce that the prestigious curators of the Royal Canterlot Library have decided to feature 'The Mare Behind the Mare' as their most recent inclusion, despite me not making it particularly easy for them to track me down so I could complete the interview portion.

Hard Reset: The Movie: The Netflix Miniseries: The Review

I'm not actually going to subject you to the same shtick as when I reviewed Edge of Tomorrow. That's funny once and only once. But! This past weekend I watched Russian Doll on Netflix, Which is very much a merger between Groundhog Day and, uh, probably Final Destination, but I'll get to that.

Reviews of Games You'll Probably Never Play If you Haven't Already: The Dig

Oh my God, Eakin! You're making blog posts after being away for so long! Does that mean you're going to start updating your stories again?

    What a great question!

    How To: Slice of Life

I wrote this back in 2013 for the site, but it never ended up getting posted anywhere. I fought it again today when I was sifting through my Google Docs folder and I figured that since I haven't had much of a presence on the site for the last couple of months I might as well toss it up in the hopes that somepony somewhere finds it helpful.

3:10 to Write Off! · 9:09pm Aug 16th, 2014

If you aren't already aware, there's a Write Off happening today. So if you think you can crank out 400-750 words in the next 21 hours you can get in on it too! The prompt is 'Famous Last Words,' for those who are interested.

I've already finished my entry, which will be visible in my compilation in the next few minutes when judging is over (apparently it has to stay anonymous until judging ends, so you'll have to wait a bit longer. Sorry!) even if you aren't interested. But if you've wanted to jump into horse words and maybe make a couple bucks at the same time, now's a great chance to do it!

The deadlines at some point tomorrow huh. Quick question. I do have an Idea, but some of it ties into another adventure story that I'm currently writing. Is that okay, or does it have to be original? Also where would I post it (Is it a group contest?)

2375503
It's posted on a third-party site, specifically here. And there's no rule against tying it into another piece of fiction that I know of, but if the judges are lost that's probably going to hurt your final score.

2375491
Too many ideas or not enough?

Huh, this sounds pretty cool. Can't wait to see what you're whipped up, Eakin.

2375527 :yay: Thank you! I'll take steps to prevent that from happening.

2375527 Too many ideas, not enough good ones. Mostly, I'm hung up on the "Famous" part. Should they be famous to us? Famous someday in the future? Famous among cult members? Hmmm, that last one's not bad. :trixieshiftright:

2375533
I kinda fudged the 'famous' part in my entry too. But you can write multiple entries if you want to.

2375542

But you can write multiple entries

This gives me soooooo many ideas. Thanks. :twilightsheepish:

"Famous Last Words" which sense actually. Because I know it as the idiomisn which means: a lie; and as the last word before die.

2375607 Or because there is someone on this website that goes by that name.

Hey Eakins I'm writing a story that will be first of it's kind on this site, but it will require the black censor bar a lot. Could you perhaps show me how to use it?

2375615
Uh, in comments it's done with [spoiler [/spoiler tags with what you want blacked out in between (and closing brackets, obviously) but I don't know if that works in stories.

2375636 well can you tell me how to use it?

2375644 I just did...
Like this
Take out the spaces in the tags and it becomes:

2375647 well I mean describe what button I'm suppose to use. I can't find it.
Like do I type it in or something? Sorry to leave you with a question air, I just need to figure this out. Just leave me a picture of it if you can.

2375662
Oh! Yeah if there's a button I don't know where it is either. I just type it.

2375683
you need the slash on the closing tag

Comment posted by Muggonny deleted Aug 16th, 2014

2375673 ya it ain't working for me thanks anyways.

750 words? I can write a story on that time and with that topic (Probably), but honestly...with 750 words there's not much I can do.

I just submitted mine. Not sure if it fits exactly what they wanted, but did my best. Cutting a story from 1100 words to 750 while still making it flow and make sense is hard stuff.

2375696

make sure its a / slash not a \ slash. and you use the [ not (

2375533 2375717 2375699

Keep in mind that "famous last words" need not be "Famous", meaning that you as the writer give those words, in whatever context they are presented, meaning.

With any story/word prompt, you can and really should – at times – stretch the boundaries of meaning as long as in the end it makes sense to do so. Remember that you'll be judged by readers, not ultimately (I hope) a panel of judges who will force such a strict adherence to literal interpretation of the prompt.

No one wants a carbon copy of each other's stories. I personally hope to see a wide variance in interpretation of that prompt.

I agree, trimming down to 750 words is really tough. My stories didn't do well at all in the last minific writeoff — I've been rocking the full-length ones though.

The good news is that everyone will be dealing with that same problem. My best advice would be, pick a simple story which you can explore in that length, and make sure that every word you write counts. We'll see how well that advice works for me this time! :derpytongue2:

So I just wrote a fic based on the prompt in, like, the last 3 hours.
So of course, only now am I looking at the word length.
>~750 words
>tfw my story is 2462 words
:facehoof:

Oh well. Thanks for getting my creative juices flowing anyway! :rainbowlaugh::rainbowkiss:

Well, the story is supposed to be both unpublished and anonymous. In theory, if it can be easily identified as yours, it can be disqualified.

I never saw that rule being applied, though, so I don't know what the limits are. But I would change names and characterization as to sever the ties to the published story; afterwards you can always restore it to what was intended before submitting to FIMFiction.

Thanks for pointing me in the direction of this contest. Even if I don't win or get any likes, it prompted me to write, and that's always good.

2375696 This text is 8old, this is in italics,
and this text is hidden under a spoiler.
If that doesn't help, I'm not sure what will, 8ut th8re's my two 8its.

Also, if you're wondering how I put those tags in th8re, I just put other tags in the middle, like [b][/b]

Meh, I don't fancy the idea of timed writing. I like to think of words as an art, something you revise and revise until you finally abandon it, because it's never finished. That's just me though. :trixieshiftright:

2376563 Thank you, and remember we still have a date on Friday.:yay:
