When I logged onto Fimfiction after work, I wasn't expecting to see this kind of comment on my user page.
Every 'hater' and 'troll' flag in my head set off at once. But I have had misunderstandings before. This being on my user page, I had no idea what story they were talking about, or if they just hated all of them.
Believing I had a hater on my hands who would most likely be blocked within a few posts, I traveled to his user page and told him how to properly give me criticism on my stories.
Ahh, now we were getting somewhere. Yet another Brony who believes Cupcakes is an unforgivable sin on the fandom and that shipping Appledash is bad and I should feel bad. Nevertheless, I pushed on.
I simply told him that a single opinion would not sway what I write about or how I write it.
Here's where he began to lose me. Yes, Cupcakes in and of itself is not an opinion. It is a story. But hating Cupcakes is an opinion.
I quickly grew weary of this, still thinking hater, and told him to make his point and threatened him with this blog entry. Which was going up anyways, it was just too interesting.
Thank you Twow443 for reading Cupcake Chronicles and trying to pass it on to others. But do try and make sure that they like that kind of stuff first.
I reiterated where comments and opinions for specific stories go, and how they differ from actual criticism.
Aaaand the infamous list of all ships better than Appledash!
I now realize that he wasn't really a hater, just rather outspoken, and tried to caution him about making such comments in the future.
He didn't take kindly to that.
So I once again told him how one opinion wasn't going to sway things, and made another attempt at wrapping things up civilly.
Good and bad, especially in the case of fanfiction, is in the eyes of the reader.
After telling him that I had no further plans for romance outside Appledash, I then recalled the Jakedash in the possible Tale of Two Ponies, and told him of that.
Ouch. I guess not. I guess I have too much bad shipping choices and unoriginal premises.
I gave him a final farewell, wrote this blog, and went back to writing more of my bad shipping.
So not a hater, but definitely a picky reader. Not a great quality when you're dealing with fanfiction; especially if you want your opinions taken seriously.
Less 'picky' than 'brain damaged'.

This person that you had this argument is one of my biggest fans (God knows why). On my page I have your story as one of my top favorites, it being one of the first clop I'd read and pretty damn good. I don't know what got into him to look at it and then jump down your throat, but I can assure you that I didn't clue him in to it.
For what it's worth, I'm sorry about all of this.
I mean, I hate Appledash, but your story was fantastic. To refuse to give a story a chance based on who the main character is, or what the main shipping pair is is completely ridiculous. I gave it a chance because of the like/dislike ratio, and hey, it was fantastic.

Well then, that was weird.
And I don't know how to respond to the shipping argument. Everybody has their favorite’s pairings and those that they dislike, but they really shouldn't go judging others. For example, I'm not the biggest Appledash shipper myself but I don't go around bashing it. I can see its potential. I like TwiPie. Yes its underrated shipping, so what. I wish people could come to except others opinions. It’s a great way for this race to learn in the end.
And no, you’re not a bad writer. I enjoy your stories immensely.

Quite a few people seem to have gotten the idea that this guy is some sort of idiot, and that wouldn't be as bad if he was just some anonymous commenter.
I'm aware people could just look up the comments on your userpage, but let's be honest, most people couldn't be bothered.
That being said, I'm not sure why people are calling this guy an idiot. He dislikes a pairing.

Sure, it was a bit rude to go bothering authors who write that pairing, but he clearly wasn't being a troll or a hater. Just... vocally opinionated.
One last note: You should be careful about using the like/dislike ratio to defend your work.
There's a huge difference between something being likable, and something being technically good.
Of course, you are actually a good writer.
But the point still stands. Someday, someone might reply with another story that has lots of likes, but is clearly not well written.
That's just my two bits.
Just to reiterate, good job dealing with someone who doesn't care for your work.

Some of my favourite stories are Fallout crossovers, and that's about as unoriginal as you can get.
