I love the idea It turns an old trope up on the head they were not smart enough to figure out what the trigger was but they were smart enough to trick Twilight in rainbow into giving them basically everything they wanted.

In a way, they figured what the trigger was, either their names or the mind controlling thing. Twilight left it ambiguous and they didn't want to find what exactly the trigger was due to obvious reasons.
