After a mugging gone wrong, I wake up in a strange castle after being "saved" by Q from Star Trek. To make matters worse, the local population thinks I'm the lost prince of the Crystal Empire, Shadow Heart. Or to be more accurate: King Sombra.
9644332 "Can I have this priceless new life for absolutely free? It'll be great exposure." "Uh... Answer a couple questions, and agree to help ______ then sure!" "F*** you, you insensitive pr**k! I paid my dues! Plus, I have (insert unimportant detail about themselves)!"
Or:
"Alright, here it is! Your new life as a _____, free of charge! You always loved _____, so you should enjoy this chance!" "But I wanted to be ___________, since it's exactly the same as _____ but much better." "BOI..."
Seriously though, that subreddit is hysterical. Loved listening to youtube vids on it.
Haven't had a chance to read it yet, but could it be? Could this be the story to fill the hole Hail to the King left in my heart?
Edit: Chances are looking good. The introduction is somewhat reminiscent of some of Fallout Equestria's chapter openings, where it begins with philosophical musings that segues into the present situation. I like the whole interaction with Discord, the answers to his three questions and some of the snarky comments allowed us to better acquaint ourselves with this protagonist, and provides a probable justification as to why Discord would pick him out of many others.
Alright, first impression is that it's on the awkward side. Especially the whole questions section. I'll continue for a bit to give this a chance, but that part really came off with a strong vibe of the MC being a "know it all" in the story. And I thought both the questions and answers were particularly awkward.
Overall, this chapter could probably have been skipped and nothing would have been lost. Then again, I've never been a fan of chapters that only describe the transition process between dying and reincarnating with very few exceptions.
Huh. I liked this scene. Does it make our protagonist sound a little uptight, caught in his own philosophies? Definitely. But really, I appreciate how human this made him feel. A good start for losing his humanity.
Interesting premise. Hopefully it doesn't end up like the last similar story I read. It had "Sombra" submitting to ponies that he knew considered him an evil monster despite not having any memories of it and agreeing with them. And the apparently he forswore his actual human identoty for a cutie mark a of "being sombra". Was a good start but ended up going full retarded, please don't let this go the same way...
When one looks back on their life, reminiscing about the past to enjoy the happy moments, they tend to overlook the parts that made them who they are; the pain, the torment, the suffering, and all the other negative things that happened throughout their life. Those moments, as much as we loathe to admit, are what truly make us who we are. One does not become stronger by partying or laughing, nor do they gain a thicker skin by being shielded against what they don't like. To grow as an individual, you cannot run when danger chases you down. You cannot hide when something you fear stares you down. Pain must be familiar to your body, mind, and soul. WIthout that intimate familiarity. When faced with adversity, everything will appear impossible to overcome. Everything will try to bring you down if you try to stand up. And most importantly: Victory will be nothing more than a hopeless dream.
I think I see two capitalization mistakes: 'Without' has a capitalized 'i', and 'Victory' probably shouldn't be capitalized.
Dude I've lived a hard life I understand this and I have done self-reflection many times in fact and I look at all my past time what I have done and all I can say is there is room for improvement
Someone apparently hasn't heard of the r/choosingbeggars subreddit...
