The battle of the Hoof ended 9 years ago. For some ponies, the scars are still fresh in the mind. As Threnody, a young heartmender working with the Followers of the Apocalypse will find, sometimes the hardest step is getting a Patient to speak.

A good chapter, as always Heart! Here's hoping Threnody gets back to Sandalwood and Slate, closest thing she's had to a good family so far.
9794666
I don't think she had any sort of condition like that in the original. By the end of Project Horizons (as in the epilogue, which is 200 years later), she's confined to the SPP hub because of a worry that she'll catch some disease and die from it. You might be thinking of that.
Oh wow did this chapter make me dislike Bubblegum a lot. Yeah, I figure he probably has a good reason for hating Blackjack (actually, considering what he said I'm gonna guess that he's probably friends with... um, that filly that Blackjack broke spine off back when she was delirious from the lack of sleep, don't remember her name), and that he was very high on drugs, but nobody, but NOBODY harms my favorite pony! (Though admittedly, as I lately began another read of Project Horizon, I began to wonder if I like Glory more than Blackjack... still, she's then favorite by a proxy, or something!) You think that's weird, unfair and kinda selfish? Ha! I was pissed at P-21 for strapping an explosive collar on Blackjack and he had MUCH better reason (I assume) for doing that (though I was far less pissed at him than at Bubblegum).
Hm, interesting. It reminds me of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II - The Sith Lords game, where the Jedi Exile (the protagonist) had lost her connection to the Force after a battle years prior as a massive weapon killed thousand of her comrades. She had a curious ability you see, she was able to form connections through the Force with people. Hence she went through a massive trauma when so many people died around her and she instinctively cut herself off from the Force in order to survive. Anyway, I am curious to see what happens to Threnody next, will she regain her ability and if this had happened to any heartmender in the past (like, if this is purely traume related, I would have thought that it would had happened during the war at the very least), or is there some other reason behind it...
Excellent chapter as always^^
That bear thing gave me the same chills as a bear from the movie Annihilation. I’m excited to see this side of Threnody that’s coming out and where it will lead her. Well done.
Yaa new chapter, it's was a great pleasure to meet you at Bronycon. Keep up the good work!

Poor anxiety pega
Excellent work as always Heartshine. Super excited to see some stable shenanigans.
i think this is the best chapter jet. the amount of time you and the others put into this story is worth every hour.
i am not surprised threnody finally snapped, there are horrific places in the wasteland and that forest is one of them.
not even considering her other traumas. but losing her heartmender sense was the final straw maybee ?
This was...something. I'd say "the plot thickens" but I don't like to, since I'd say that for like, every other chapter at least, but
cdn.vox-cdn.com/thumbor/9zK1UzW5nBmaMLtpF0u2NpFpOI4=/38x0:1230x671/1600x900/cdn.vox-cdn.com/uploads/chorus_image/image/49362917/Screen_Shot_2016-04-20_at_4.22.55_PM.0.0.png
I mean that really got out of hand fast.
Also, did you mean to have it start out with "Wait, wtf is going on? Who's she talking to? Wasn't she just in the forest?," cus that's what I was like until she said her name, and then things made more sense.
9797453
I LOVE THAT IMAGE. Also yes, it was supposed to be disorienting. The entire chapter is supposed to feel... confusing. It's partially a flashback, it's partially Threnody in therapy with Sandalwood, and all of it is supposed to be like 'what in the goddamned heck is going on?"

Cool stuff. Thank you for your service. Blame Obsidian since I'm 90% sure that it's a grenade machine gun (I shit you not, that's a thing in the game Fallout NV. There's even a 40mm one, but that's unique)

Personally, I'd shoot him in the head, throw the body in a wood chipper. Then pour gas all over the mush and set it on fire. Then pour hydrochloric acid on the ashes. Then mix the ashes in with Brahmin Shit for fertilizer.

Man, those kind of people lies me the hell off. It's like Now most Vegans go it for a class sense of moral superiority so that they can act all "Holier-Than-Thou" rather than actually caring about the environment, animals, workers, or corporations. Now keep in mind, I disagree with you, at least somewhat, but you're not a bad person for owning a gun, (major duh there) and I'll respect your opinion on the matter long as you respect mine. I see it as "People kill people, but guns, especially an AR-15 with a 100 round drum magazine, make it a lot easier to kill a bunch of people, and God Damnit, there's got to be a way to keep them out of the wrong hands (and not more guns, since, while they don't nearly get enough coverage, like 55% of gun deaths are suicides, and more guns makes it easier for someone to get a gun and kill themselves with it, rather than something far less deadly like purposefully ODing on something, which I'm sure doesn't have a 92%...success rate? That feels like a fucked up way to put it. Anyway,) while also keep in them in the hands of people who won't kill someone with it."
Please don't be mad at me for bringing up politics in the comments of your story.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaay!!!! I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU MEAN AND I DIDN'T HAVE TO CLICK ON THE LINK
You had me in the first half with Puddle, not gonna lie. I'm glad it worked out though.
That bear makes me uncomfortable still.
9797038
Tato is a vegetable in Fallout 4 game, it's hybrid of potato and tomato
Good lord, the business with Puddle nearly broke me. An outstanding chapter (as usual). The Family just keeps getting creepier, Threnody's companions keep getting more worked over, and of course poor Thren is blaming herself for everything.
I fully expect that if a butterfly ran into a wall, Thren would blame herself for it. There's a point past which I do feel like she should realize that some of it's unreasonable, but then again she really was thrust into the position of responsibility here, and responsibility for the lives of others is a terrible pressure indeed.
Can't wait to see what happens next.
It sounds like that bear is made of prions... Prionesti?
gotta wait till tomarrow to read new chapter =(
this is gonna be a loooooong day at work T.T

Yeah... I... have some regrets about going straight to the UNICORN SUPREMECY route with the Family. I think it would have worked better if I made them more like the Nietzscheans from Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda than... what they are. I have a feeling this story won't age well if the cultural zeitgeist in the US changes dramatically in the next few years. Honestly, they originally were modelled after the way that the Vory V Zakone worked in Shadowrun, which is why I made some references to crime families, and have continued to use them as more... psychological antagonists. They're dangerous, but more insidious, which I've found fits better for a non-fighter MC.
Side note: referencing that I know what the Vory are to the Russian translators was a bit of a trip for them. XD
Loved the chapter, loved how you managed to convey the tension until the end!
Wonder what happened to Silvia in the end of that. Also poor meIRL macPanicpega having a breakdown, at least she'll finally get to rest!
Great chapter, I am happy to see an update on this story. Poor Thren though she is still a child but has gone through so much. May she stay strong and get better soon.

That was a neat chapter.
9796953
That was the first thing I thought of as well
This was another fantastic chapter, that forest was creepy as all seven hells... Nobody really got out of that unscathed, and I'm really curious wtf is up with Silvia?
Hoping that BJ isn't too fucked up, but then again what else is new. I'm also a little more than worried for Thren about her new title of Phoenix, unless it's referring to her past. I certainly hope it's not her future, but that's the direction I'm leaning.
Cheers!
I think maybe there should be '...' or a '-' at the 'him' instead of a period
need a comma after pipbuck
I think this should be 'in to'
I like that Threnody has the self-awareness to recognise in the act of it that she's stepping up when it's something even she considers out of character, and I like it further since it makes sense that she'd be the one forced to take the leadership role because their immediate situation was medical.
Making that vocalisation was probably still just the natural defence mechanism of the annihilation-bear (since I'm sure Sweetness isn't the first pony it's eaten/assimilated), but I can't help but feel like a nemesis battle has just been set up for the future.
Often times in stories I don't much enjoy situations of characters having their thought patterns and behaviours messed with by the environment, but the Red Forest and Peculiar's earlier mind trap were done really well. In the Red Forest, when Bubblegum beat Blackjack in a fight, I was surprised, but considering what Blackjack was saying, I can believe her not fighting at her best against an opponent with that kind of mass advantage, and it’s not like Blackjack has won every fight in the past either.
When Threnody made that deal with the Guardian however, I do have to admit I forgot I wasn't reading Homelands, and shouted to myself "OMC Threnody don't make spirit deals without a shaman mask holy crap!!"
I really hope the Wasteland gives Threnody at least some time to work through these incidents both internally and with the others (in particular Threnody's reaction to Blackjack telekinetically shutting her up); and I'm also very interested in seeing how Blackjack manages to not be a vegetable, if those bandages and Blackjack's energy blade really did save Bubblegum from going cordyceps or something, if Silvia is some sort of synth or blank or something and is going to join the team (or turn out to have been planned as a contingency mole the whole time), and how this telepathy Threnody’s gotten is going to interact with the loss of her heartmending senses
This chapter is just excellent- it didn't feel like the group's just been faffing about in the Forest since those X chapters in themselves I feel are fine breaks to discover more about the characters. If they were smoothly worked into the main quest that’d be fine too but since I’m invested in the characters’ pasts and their emergence already I appreciate seeing them in a more focused manner.

I've always liked the racism in Equestria. (Or any story really.) That role usually goes to two groups, the Nazis and the KKK. I imagine The Family closer to being the Nazis with how they're going for genetic purity.
Unicorns are the superior race. The only set back with them is they need time, training, and most importantly, the proper spells. Whereas the other races can do what they can naturally.
I'm excited to see where all this "genetic perfection" ties in with Threnody.
Was a little disappointed in Sweetness' death. Had expected a major payback scene with her and Threnody. Almost forgot she was the one who's face got melted by Threnody!
EDIT. unless I missed it. The Family is like the Unicorn version of Red Eye's stable. Either Red Eye or his stable as a whole (I think Stable 101 was only Earth Ponies) believed that the Earth Ponies were superior through their hard work and technological advancement. Whereas the family sees superiority through magic and these new "mind powers". (Idk what word includes all mind powers)
I finally managed to catch up. Now how to best sum up this story?
It’s a story about tiny horses that cry a lot. Sometimes the tiny horses are also confused about their sexuality. Other times the tiny horses turn other tiny horses into death horses.
No seriously, I like this story a lot. Lots of good world building with The Family, Fold and Stable 9.
Threnody is an interesting protagonist. What makes her so appealing is the fact, that she’s not a hardened Wastlander who takes out Raiders left and right. After 19 Chapters the only things she killed was a mutated Antlion. Sure Blackjack and Littlepip were the same when they left their stable, but I didn’t take long until they killed their first raiders and eventually they blew up goddesses or killed eldritch abominations on the moon. I’m not saying that they are bad protagonists, but once in a while it’s nice to have protagonist who’s not a fighter.
Speaking of Blackjack, she’s such a great character with so many facets: A shameless sex-addicted , a hardened warrior who can kill with her mind, a deeply traumatized mare who is desperately looking for a purpose in life and a wise mentor with insightful thoughts. I can see why people enjoyed following her story in Project Horizons.
The Red Forest part felt like it came straight out of a horror movie. Never watched Annihilation, but I’ve played S.T.A.L.K.E.R. so that what comes to mind when I think about the Red Forest. And like most places in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. the Red Forest is a real place – except that there are no mutants who want to eat your face – who got its name after the Chernobyl explosion when the trees turned red and died.
Seeing Blackjack going down in the fight with Bubblegum was scary. In combat she was portrayed as four-legged killing machine who wasn’t even bothered by a hit in the face. She also was a safety net for Threnody. Our protagonist could always rely on her support and experience and when things went wrong Blackjack could deal with it.
Peculiar is back and he’s still a creep. Also The Family wants to go all Mad Scientst on Thren because of her linage. No sure what’s the deal with Silvia. I hope she’s a Blank or a Robot. Because the alternative would be that The Family took an Earth Pony and turned her into a mindless slave. That said, everything about her screams future party member, so she could be the new Rampage.
And Sweetness survived the face melting only to get eaten by a mutated bear. Talk about a bad week.
9809915
Oh yeah. I did research on the Red Forest outside of Chernobyl when I learned that there was a herd of Przewalski's horses living in the exclusion zone, specifically the Red Forest. It sounded really neat, and after a friend had me watch Annihilation with him, I decided I really wanted to combine the feeling of the Red Forest from Chernobyl with aspects of Annihilation and the Hedge from Changeling the Lost.
That said, I am really glad you've enjoyed the story! It's been lovely to see new comments come up, and I am always happy when I hear from people who have never wanted to touch Fallout Equestria start with Speak. I... admit that Speak is a very atypical story for what most writers do with FO:E, but the fact that you stuck it out and enjoyed it makes me happy! Hopefully you'll keep enjoying the ride as we go!
~Heartshine~
Thanks for the chapter. Its awesome as always.

Wait, elephant ears are a real thing?

You learn something new every day. 😁

If the schools ever start teaching history again there wont be a need to worry about the story alignment with the cultural zeitgeist because readers will be educated enough to comprehend the character motivations.
Thats assuming the world is still here in 5 years and there are any survivors capable of accessing whatever servers the story is stored on. O.o
9845242
Aye yeah, there's that too... @.@
My guess is Sylvia has been a slave her whole life (possibly even bred or created for the purpose) and being abandoned by her master was like being a puppet with it's strings cut. I feel sorry for her.
Sweetness however I hope enjoys a nice warm spot in Hell!
Look forward to chapter 20!

They were vaguelly referenced in Horizons
That can be misunderstood.
Oh, his name Opportunity? I wasn't far with my Change... one related to another..
Well that was interesting.
Unpopular opinion: Blackjack needed her ass kicked.
Also she just can't die, can she?
9936965
That fight, despite the outcome, may have been the best thing to allow her to face a dark disease in her mind that festered ever since she got to know P-21. That she was the Monster the Knight couldn't slay because he developed feelings for her.
So theres a Super Metroid Romhack called
Super Metroid: Ascent.
In zone 3, area 2, theres a.... Reddish flesh cave/jungle? With wierd flowers, creatures and eerie music that the Red forrest of this story really reminds me of....
10365562
The inspiration was a mad fusion between the actual Red Forest in Chernobyl, the movie Annihilation, and Uncle Lovecraft's Happy Fun Time Murder Hole from Made in Abyss, with bits of my own insanity included.
You know I can't help but feel a little bit of worry reading this. What are you planning heart I'm scared
Because this is either just for the chapter or its going to have greater meaning
Ive never heard it worded like that, that's amazing

I'm gonna turn Threnody into A GUNDAM
i.pinimg.com/736x/5d/2e/b3/5d2eb36e060259d3d4c8533d8b1fb67c.jpg
jk, also holy hell am I necroposting in response to this lol
The fact Threnody lost her ability to sense people's emotions is definitely concerning... But also welcome. Cuz now she gets to experience life from a different lens.
And who knows? Maybe she'll learn how to read folks based off body language? Or somehow will regain her ability? Regardless of how things turn out, i look forward to reading more. This story has been amazing so far.
