Midnight Choices

Three hooded figures raced through the night as the two in front made their way quickly. The third moved at a slower pace as they made their way to the now bare statue platform void of the once massive stone horse that stood proudly in front of Canterlot High School. Swiftly the first two made it up to the top slab raching down to pull up their slower third. They sat around the small crack in the middle of the stone as faint light shown for a moment as pale multi-colored wisps flew lingering around the girls as they took off their hoods.

Adagio Dazzle sat near reaching out silently pulling a pale red wisp close as she fumbled with it in her shaking hands. Across from her sat her two sisters Aria Blaze and Sonata Dusk who were stairing intently at the small rift that shown dimly this cold night.

"I can't belive that it's still flowing." Sonata cheered softly as she started to hum.

"Let's just make this quick, so we can start back up to where we left off." Aria snipped back joining in her sisters harmony. The rift gave off another set of wisps that floated around them before flying off away from them. "Why won't they hang around? That one Adagio has seems to be for some reason." Aria's mullberry eye's started to flare up.

"It's the same every time we've tried, I think it's 'cus Dagi hasn't joined yet." The youngest siren said placing a worried hand on her sisters shoulder. She didn't look away from the dull ember in her hands that she prodded with her finger occasionally as though trying to shape it.

"She's been useless this last month, and I keep telling you to leave her home. But you never do so we get slowed down and have to deal with her." The middle siren growled leaning back looking with distain at her sister. Unwavering the eldest sat prodding the small red ball of magic that seemed to be connecting with her somehow.

"I just don't want to see anything happen to her. She deserves this as much as we do even if she's being mute for some reason." Sonata retorted flipping her hair. "Besides I know you would feel bad if she just disappeared."

"Look stupid, she's gone brain dead and we don't need her dead wight dragging us down. If the roles were reversed she would have dumped either of us in a heartbeat if it meant getting our powers back." Slamming her fist down tears started to well up in her hardened eyes. "She may be our sister, but she hasn't acted like it for a long time. Always taking lead even if it wasn't the best option. And look where we are now! Trapped here in this horrid world, powerless and trying to syphon any little trace of magic off of a tiny rift of our homeworld." Aria pulled her legs up to her chest as she couldn't hold back the tears anymore.

"I know how you feel Ari. It's been over three months and the last one has sucked big time since we lost her." Sonata jutted a thumb towards her oldest sister who's eyes looked glazed over as she stared deeply into her hands. "But maybe we could forget the whole revenge thing and try to see if the friendship thing might work?" Nervously she nibbled at her pinkie nail waiting for another outburst. "Nothing left for us to lose now." Tears started to well up in her raspberry eyes looking at her sisters and their situation.

"No, Sonata. This anger I have towards them is the last thing driving me to something. Don't take it from me." Aria's pale face rose from her soaked knees as she stifled another crying bout. "If it was a vote then we would wait for fluffy there to break our tie but unless you can get though her vow of silence then we are going to keep at this for a long time."

There was nothing but silence as they sat, waiting for something to happen apart from the occasional flare from the rift. Small orbs of light danced around the sisters as they sad half sobbing half seething. Something clicked in the eldist as her eyes came back to life when she noticed those around her.

Adagio stood up holding up the wisp she roughly formed to resemble her old pendant to her neck. I shone for a moment before fading away from her hand. "I'm sorry." Her soft voice cut through the silence as her two younger sisters eyes fell upon her.

Quickly her pale yellow hand rose stopping both of her sisters from speaking. "I've been thinking non-stop about what we can do. And after all of this time, I feel that revenge would just lead to more punishment. Along with that I've grown tired of not having any kind of love or adoration outside of you two. Also Aria, if this little rift is giving us an inkling of something like magic back, just think what has it done to them sence we saw Shimmer ascend to that form." Crossing her arms, Adagio turned her back to the rift and sat down on the edge of the cold stone platform.

Aria tried to speak but came up silent lost in cursing thought. Sonata moved closer to the rift as another plume of magic released around her hands as she tried to snatch up as many as she could. "Are you saying what I think your saying Adagio." Aria stood after her thoughts faded with a heavy sigh.

"For the first time in a long time I feel Nata has the right idea, and that we should give them a chance. It's far from ideal but i"ve grown tired of just existing and not having something to look back on besides my failures, and how I failed you two." Sadness filled the eldest sirene's voice cracking slightly at the end. "Even if we screw this one up, I don't think they would care if we accualy bonded."

A teal streak was all Aria could make out as her younger sister nearly tackled the other off of her seat.

"Just for the record, I hate both of you and this stupid plan." With a heavy gruff and slight grin Aria joined the hug. The rift shone brighter for a short moment that went unnoticed as the sisters jumped down to the ground.

Author's Note:

Had this idea after watching Legends of Everfree at 3:30 in the morning. This is the first time I've posted anything for writing so please let me know what i could do better. Thank you for your time.

Not bad. Not bad at all. If anything, my biggest critique is that some of the ideas in this story could have been developed a little further. For example, the way you wrote it kind of implied to me that this is the first time that Sonata brought up the whole friendship thing, and it seems a little weird to me that something so small could snap Adagio out of her stupor. You also don't go into a lot of detail as to what siphoning magic from the rift is like. You describe what happens, but you might want to try and give a really vivid description of what feeding on the magic feels like. If that's even what they're doing, that is. It was a little unclear.

That being said, there are some things you did well. It's a little hard to assess the characterization from such a short story, but I think you're definitely headed in the right direction. Things like Aria and Sonata dragging Adagio everywhere show that there's still a bond between them, even if they don't always get along very well. This is a scene that I could see happening in one of the movies. You also did a good job of avoiding a big infodump by explaining the situation through dialogue, and I liked some of the dialogue you used to do that.

Lastly, I'm sorry if this is nitpicky, but you should really go back through this and check again for typos and grammatical errors. I'd be glad to point some out if you'd like.

This is a pretty good start, so I would definitely encourage you to keep writing. I think you could probably expand this scene into a larger story if you wanted to.

7606464 Thanks for the critique Naiad, this something I will probably come back to a bit later on after working some other projects when there's time.

If it's Equestrian magic, then it's the magic of Harmony and can only be truly accessed in a non-self-destructive way through Friendship.

Aside from reading like a prologue (or epilogue) to something bigger, I did enjoy this for the potato chip story it was . . . I am still hungry though. :trixieshiftright:
