I don't know how they would fit in but maybe bring the Caroleans. I mean those guys were insane in their battle tactics, and yet they still beat a numerically superior Russia....sigh.
Edit: Ok I didn't read the AN completely, but really gunpowder was a major player in the 30 Years War despite the Tercios that roamed around. Ah well. If they're not accepted then so be it. Long live Carolus Rex.
Edit 2: Technically this is a viable option since they were implemented a good while before the 18th Century......just saying.
to words that will stop the Equestrian Royal guard in their tracks, GREEK FIRE!
7645357 they dont have greek fire, and dont know how to make it since it was used by the byzantines not the romans
I'd say, a group of about 500 Samurais
consolecreatures.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/09/faction-dawn-hero-main.jpg
500 Vikings
ubistatic9-a.akamaihd.net/resource/en-US/game/forhonor/fh-game/fh_vikings-slide-media-1.jpg
and 500 Knights

I say send in 800 spartans from spartal. Their warriors were some of history's best and didn't use gun powder. That or give them Alexander the great so they can't loss and mabey add 600 of his troops. Why cuse FTW
goddam incent win cheat
7645361 Interesting idea, but i would prefer the same group of warriors cause it will be hard to integrate all their tactics and weapons without easily making mistakes
7645365 yeaaahhh no
Mongolians
or a group of soldiers who fought for/with Alexander the great
7645367 Hmmmm, you may need experienced archers that will assassinate high value targets and be able to defend themselves from attack. Not to mention, Samurais are adept with surprise attacks and like I said, eliminating high value targets. Contrary to belief, they only use swords only when in danger. They mostly use the bow and arrow and during their era, they are probably the best marksman in the world.
I'd say use the Spartans from Sparta. One of the best special military forces of that time besides the Romans, Ottoman Empire and the Mongolians. I could say use a small portion of the Huns of Attila, but they were very much against the Romans in that time. That or maybe the Macedonians. :/
I think it would be interesting if, due to the circumstances of being outnumbered by the Equestrians (as well as any other pro-slavery nation), the Romans are forced to work alongside their enemies, the Celts.
Also, perhaps not some 800 Spartans (considering the damage 300 can do, this would be a little OP), but something along the lines of 50 to 100, perhaps with some Athenians along side them (bringing with them the secrets of Greek fire).
Later on, perhaps they encounter another large group of humans, mostly former-slaves or rebel humans, united under the banner of the Mongol Empire, and lead by a man who claims to be Genghis Khan reborn (whether or not he would be up to debate.) Would the Romans ally themselves with the new Mongol Horde, or would they fight against the barbarians in the name of the Emperor and the Empire?
I wish there were guns, so I could say, "Well, 'Murica of course! Under good ol' George Dubuyuh Bush as the general. Wherever there be oil, it's going to be some freedom in that region; whether they like it or not! Use our warheads of freedom to take out 'dem commies and terrorists!"
Do you have pro archer just aim to the head like headshot multi kill everything .
7645447 Modern weapons would certainly be OP here. I think any form of firearm from during or after the American Revolution would also be OP. Arquebuses and early cannons wouldn't be too out of place, however.
I think a small force of ninja's, maybe 200 or so would be good. They're stealthy, fast and are extremely skilled in taking down stronger opponents.
Also maybe a force of 500 Mamluk Warriors. For those who don't know who they are they were basically slaves that overthrew their masters, defeated the Mongol's and the Crusader's and established an empire that lasted three hundred years. Many were trained as cavalry soldiers and had to follow the dictates of furusiyya, a code that included values such as courage and generosity, and also cavalry tactics, horsemanship, archery and treatment of wounds, etc.
I feel these two would be a great addition to the story given their respective specialties.

I know I know. But, it would've been badass in my opinion. 'Murica.
i say a full tercio
Tercio
How about if you put Knight Templars? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knights_Templar
A small group of spartans or some knights, let's say from england.
500 Knight Templars or english knights
A small chinese army: 500 swordsmen, 300 archers, 100 samurai and 200 artilery consisting of hwachas, canons, and catapults. You can leave out the artilery if you want, but the chinese have excelent war strategies in that time. Thanks
Send in 300 Spartans and END them
I'd say put a Carthage army there because the Romans have already went to war with them once.
7645369 to which? The spartans or Alexander the great?
7646247 Alexander
7646165 three times actually
7645981 china didn't have samurai, that's Japan
7646289 oh, I dun goofed. Leave out the samurai... Or don't your choice.
7646286 why
7646345 because i dont want to explain how he teleported an army n stuff since he was never defeated, i couldnt go with the 'oh they died so magic brought them back in equestria' it would be too hard to bring a real army there. I went with the 9th legion originally cause they dissapeared with no trace.
7646347 well since when has fim/fanfaction ever been on canon?
7646465 that and I know little about alexander's army tactics and makeup of units
7646561 Then we must consult with the all mighty and all knowing google.
meme-lol.com/wp-content/uploads/meme-lol/-HAHA--What-if-there-was-no-Google-MEME-LOL.jpg
7646723 another reason is, i dont wanna
Possible groups of ancient peoples: Persians, Babylonians, byzantines, Greeks, Judah, barbarians, feudal Japan, Crusaders, kitchen sink, the Zulu, Macedonians, a wrench, Aztecs, Nordic Vikings.
All I can think of at the moment.
7646898 well that's all you really need.
How about some crusade era knights?
vikings or beserkers or what about germanic warriors? germanic warriors were really skilled with spear and shield after all and had pretty good tactics an army of still unknown size even managed to complety kill one of romes largest and best legions in just one battle
How about Carthaginians? They are experts at building warships and have elephants in their army. Since the ponies are frightened of horses just think about how they will tremble in fear at those giant beasts rushing into battle. Even the Romans had trouble with facing elephants against both the armies of the King Pyrrhus of Epirus (Pyrrhic War) and later against the Carthaginian general Hannibal (Second Punic War). Alexander the Great and many later Eastern European generals used them well too when he obtained them in India.
So the spell affected multiple 'armies'
