It took weeks for Rainbow Dash to finagle a date with Big Macintosh. But there's something that she couldn't shake when he was around. Why does he always act so distant? As she'll come to find out, he may have a good reason.

I enjoy this. It isn't poorly written smut, and has a solid storyline. I love your writing and can't wait for the next update
How are you this good at writing deep characters and good plot? Spellcheck doesn't even think spellcheck is a word, seriously.
Can't wait for more

I like the sound of that.

Glad to hear you all like the story. It's always great to hear from people that have been hanging around for a while.

Sorry about not replying to this earlier. I'm definitely going to continue this towards some sort of end. I'm just not sure what that is, necessarily, but it's a ways off at least.
4194431
Glad to hear it

Do you feel warm and fuzzy on the inside?
I do ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
I, for one, wouldn't mind a hold on the clop. It's fine if you don't, especially since you're likely to be mobbed if it isn't soon, but I prefer to keep my stories with plot separate from my stories with "plot" in most cases. Either way, I'm looking forward to next chapter!

Well, I'm definitely not rushing things. It'll come when it makes sense, and that's what matters. I'm not going to just throw stuff in where it shouldn't be.
Good to know you like what you're reading, though.
I was expecting Rainbow to call them out on such an unbelievable lie.
I don't exactly know how I feel about the quick resolution of Applejack almost beating the snot out of Rainbow.
Dangit, AJ. Friends don't hurt eachother.
: Ya would've done the same if y'all were in mah horseshoes.
...Umm, no hooves so I'd have a hard time fitting in those horseshoes.
Love the overprotective sister! I am sure you don't get as much s*** for that as I did for the overprotective brother. Keep up the great work!
Gotta say that the explanation of why he's got both and why they at least both partially work made perfect sense to me. Even before reading the note at the end. It made me wonder if you'd found a case of hermaphroditism that had more overlap than what I'd seen.
4198134
Yeah, I kinda saw that as reasonable, but some people didn't. Ah, well.

It's awesome to hear you say that, because I did a slew of extra research after your comment from last time. All that really changed was that I went into a lot more detail, but either way. It's a huge relief. Based on what I found, it stands to reason that such a thing could happen, but it would be exceedingly rare. Thus the description added as collateral.
I didn't find a specific case of that exact thing, although I found a few that bore resemblance, so I let those influence Mac's status.
Why doesn't AJ ever gets her ass kicked for things like that in all those RainbowMac fics?
Protective or not I think the girls are a little too close to each other for the typical "If you break his/her heart..." speech.
Could be from Dash, why not? She's probably a better fighter.
4200168
Cool.

Well... they've shown pretty conclusively that AJ is a lot stronger than Dash. It works out about like this: if it's based on how dexterous and coordinated they are, Dash will probably come out on top, if it's about raw power and force, AJ's gonna win.
Fighting's a bit different though as both routes work.
From the fighting we've seen them actually do (mostly against changelings) then the winner for best fighter is Rarity.
AJ's strong, Dash is quick, but Rarity looks like she has some kind of actual fighting style training. The kick she delivers when one of them gets near Tom while she's under Discord's spell and the stance she falls into right afterwards are pretty clearly martial arts based.
Sure, it was probably done for the sight gag, but it's the only thing we've really got to go on.
But between AJ and Dash, my money would be on Applejack. Sure, Rainbow has got speed and they've looked evenly matched in the few tussles and competitions they've had, but in an actual fight AJ's the favorite because she's just built to take more abuse. Dash is the only one of the mane six we've ever seen injured, and she's hurt herself more than once and had it affect her in a very noticeable way. AJ's only injury wasn't really an injury so much as it was extreme sleep deprivation.
So, yeah, my money's on the farm pony.

Didn't expect this bit to be the one to be discussed but ok.
Dash is, for all we know, the only one to have learned how to fight and continues to train in all kinds of physical activity not just one, giving her the versitality. A proper momentum nullifies the advantage Applejack has in her hind hooves (the matter of their front hooves is debatable) as witnessed in LZ or SiP and as long as she doesn't lose the control she can't be harmed no matter how destructive the attack (again LZ).
The biggst chances one has to defeat her is to take advantage of her lack of any long-range attacks (can't count on the lightning to be precise) or to somehow disturb her focus similar to the way you can defeat a unicorn. Make her angry or something. If she uses he weather control powers it's a lost fight but she prefers hoof-to-hoof, which can be helpful to her opponent. The best way to do this is to finish her off really quick. I assume her fight with a unicorn would also be really fast and could go either way. First reaction wins.

I get where you're coming from, but what I'm using as the best gage I can for what they can do against something they know is coming is from Mysterious Mare Do Well. Rainbow tries to stop the cart rolling down the hill and is unsuccessful, while AJ is able to bring it to a standstill by catching it from in front.
Rainbow definitely has speed and agility on AJ, but durability, power, and stamina are going to win in the long run. Rainbow will likely get in a bunch of hits and get back out of the way before AJ can counter, but one good shot and she's done, and with AJ's skills from fighting chimeras and dealing with stampedes and other dangerous tasks - she's just better situated to endure.

In the series we've witnessed the Earth ponies' strength, thankfully outside of MMDW and I don't even know what happened there or during its production. Anyway that's beside the point. We've seen it in other episodes.
Earth ponies are more sturdy while pegasi are more all-around powerful. So they're very strong, not fragile. Probably to survive eventual flight accidents. Just like their sharp senses. At least with "traditional" pegasi like Dash. And of course they come from a race of warriors. Perhaps this is why Dash worked to earn her black belt.
I actually had to look up to see what was the original point. So, Dash Vs. AJ. I don't know if perhaps Rarity would be a better candidate. I suspect she at least knows the basics of martial arts.
I firmly believe that in a fair fight, when you have one significantly stronger guy (but without much experience) and the opponent, who knows how to fight and is not a weakling, this fighter will probably win. Even if we assume that unicorns or pegasi won't use their special abilities.
Simply put: the writers recently focus on their future careers. Dash's is connected with physicality, athleticism and apparently military. With AJ it's business and growth (cultivation I mean). They really downplayed her other activities such as rodeo but it seems that she's "gained" sculpting ability.
I'm not sure what to think of the scenes like the one from SiP, when Dash effortlessly cuts down several trees with a single kick. Or razor-sharp wings. Something dishonest about it. Like they want something really edgy and cool. Not that it's a particularly consistent show But regardless I'm ready to change my opinion but right now I just don't have any reasons to.

Where are you getting Rainbow having a black belt? I don't remember anything about that.
And as to the Pegasus as a warrior race, that's a stretch. All we've got is that they were at one time lead by a military leader. There's no evidence at all to suggest that their whole society was based around their military. In fact, the mythology established only really sets them as the weather controllers. And even if it were a military society and not just the government, it happened a really, really long time ago.
Celestia and Luna freed Equestria from Discord's rule and became its leaders over a thousand years ago. The country had to have been established well before that.
Other than that, there's no real mention of military endeavors except for the Wonderbolts - which are more of a performance group rather than a military order.
And on top of that, we know that there wasn't any royal guard before Luna became Nightmare Moon - which suggests pretty well just how little military Equestria has.
Plus it wasn't just the Pegasus that helped form the guard after Luna was banished, but all three races.
There really isn't any evidence whatsoever to suggest the Pegasus are any more geared towards combat than any other race.
And as to Applejack being just a farmer? Have you ever worked on a farm? Good gravy, it's like a 24/7 workout. There's a reason farm boys do so unbelievably well in basic training. Saying AJ's farm work isn't on par with Dash's physical training is extremely laughable. It's completely out of touch with what kind of power and endurance you build. And AJ's rodeo stuff can't just be brushed off when she's good enough to finish in the top five in pretty much every single category in a national competition. Sure, somebody else won each event, but Cherry Jubilee puts it into perspective when she says she's never seen anyone win so many ribbons - AJ's not just good in one event, she's good in all of them.
You can't really discount any of that as being anything less than being equal to Dash's workout regimen. And, realistically, AJ's is more demanding. That's why she's got the endurance that Dash doesn't. Just ask the simple question - between the two of them, who's more likely to stop and take a nap when there's work to be done?

We see Rainbow having a black belt back in Season 1. And some of her moves in the show clearly refference that. Pegasi are a proud race of warriors as mentioned in HWE. Based on Spartan Greece. That's all I want to say.
I can't help but think this song is perfect for when the clop scene comes.(from Big Mac's POV)
This chapter felt a bit rushed... but other than that, it was outstanding, once again.
First, I’m confused. What’s the problem here? Dash isn’t in heat, right? Is it that Mac’s own pheromones would drive him to rut her? He explained that he wants to rut himself kinda, but what does that have to do with her? Is it that heat pheromones in the air, regardless of their source, make stallions horny for any mare? That must be it.
Second, Applejack isn’t contrite enough. Seems like Dash is the first mare to appreciate her brother for who he truly is. That should make her happy and very grateful to her friend. She should be mortified that she jumped to conclusions and resorted to violence. Dash herself should be offended That Applejack thought so little of her. (UPDATE - I see that you addressed some this in the next chapter.)
Third, how has Mac, a pony who walks around completely naked, been able to keep his hermaphroditism a secret? He even has a shorter tail, which doesn’t make it any easier! AND he’s tall, so most ponies’ line of sight is pretty close to the height of his extra genitalia. It’d be a VERY hard secret for him to keep.
