Hey everyone, sorry for the delay in releasing a new chapter. I got busy with school stuffs.
I'm about 70% though writing my next chapter, but in the meantime Kaidan offered to submit this chapter for you guys. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did
Twenty-eight trillion humans? Almost four thousand times the current world population? At that level, pretty much everywhere on earth would have the population density of Manhattan. There wouldn't be any rural areas left. The entire planet would be baking in the heat output from the required cities. But, it's a site about colorful magical pastel talking ponies, so physics can be suspended. So the moon and Mars colonies can keep humanity going while they try to terraform a dead earth back into something livable, perhaps, and Equestria gets spared...
Cool story but there's something that doesn't make sense
No probe that landed to take surface samples has returned.
we must adapt to this radiation.”
One of the students raised a hand. “What kind? Alpha, gamma? Is it lethal?”
“We don’t know yet,” the scientist admitted.
You’re here today to see if we can find a volunteer to undergo a radiation therapy, using the samples we’ve gathered from the planet.
So they don't know what kind of radiation it is, and don't have any planetary samples, but then use planetary samples they don't have to irradiate him?
This was far more misanthropic than I would have liked to read. As well as having an impossible set-up. The human population is predicted to cap at 9 billion by 2050. We only grow enough food to feed 12 billion. There is no way we can get to 1 trillion, let alone 28. At that population, we would have 7 times the population density of Manhattan, on every square kilometer of land. And that is without using any land as farmland. Also, assuming current human population growth, it would take over 700 years to get to that population. By that point, something almost certainly would have to make overpopulation a non-issue. Then there is the waste heat and garbage that would be generated. As well as the extreme global warming that would be happening due to carbon emissions. And then there is the problem with the radiation, how they could even figure out how to produce it, as well as the effects on the human genome. When radiation hits DNA, it tends to cause random mutations, emphasis on random. I am not a geneticist, so I may not be right on this, but the transformation would be extremely slow. The rate at which your body rebuilds itself, in fact, which can be as high as seven years for your bones. Of course, at those speeds, you would probably become horribly deformed before dying a painful death as a half-human, half-pony hybrid when the new and old tissues end up either not connecting right, or rejecting each other altogether.
On the other hand, the TF was done brilliantly. I just think the story could have done with a better, less misanthropic set-up, as well as using magic instead of science for the changes.
Hot damn, this chapter does this 'humans fucked up their own world' thing so much better than most stories and dat transformation! Those are perfect representations of overthetop scientist (prbly real representations too). Also, the part about the horse vet, why did he need to shove his arm up into Pen's V I mean, why would he expect Pen NOT to orgasm?? and then the soldiers, such pussies and still have the balls to insult Pen?! This fic = representation of assholes. Last thing, didn't Pen consider that maybe things were too perfect? I mean, 500K for signing on and how would he know his family got the pay? Why didn't he question the lack of volunteers? Why didn't he question their plans if the experiment failed? Just because the others turned into seemingly normal horses, why didn't they send them to the planet, what about intelligence tests? ugh...mmmm cheese 4.bp.blogspot.com/-7joCyy7z6jk/UchobSJFeaI/AAAAAAAAABs/l6VITcWI6L0/s400/cheesy.jpg
I told myself I probably couldn't read more of this, and yet I come back for more. I feel like I have Stockholm syndrome with you and Kaidan sometimes. You've captured my imagination and however horrified it might be it keeps making me come back.
A pretty interesting Sci-Fi horror approach. I was cool with the scientist and soldier being callous ass hats, as it takes all kinds, but with how the Veterinary was depicted as a decent person, I felt him not speaking out in horror at those "revelations" of the groups doings while in the stable left him out of character. More than anything, this chapter had a lot of hilarious segments too it, so well done on that front! I think my favorite was the "A few months in cryo-sleep far away from fat fingers is what I really want right now." Hilarious.
3941611 As our population grows we've continuously invented new and improved methods of producing food. Be it fertilizer of genetically modified plants. In this story, they already switched away from using trees for oxygen to manufactured/produced oxygen. There's no reason to assume they don't regularly eat artificially flavored protein paste that grants a person a balanced diet without being field grown food. As for waste, we have a lot of waste because we live in a time where people can be wasteful. Given this scenario, it's not unreasonable that a totalitarian government (possibly a world government at that point) would pass crushing laws on free enterprise and the general public to control waste. They're also warping through space so your analysis is completely disregarding the possibility of other technologies being developed to deal with the waste matter, along with all the other "issues" you listed.
It's Sci-Fi with advanced tech being talked about so that needs to be kept in mind when reading this sort of thing. Also, this is hardly the first future story detailing a worst case scenario for man kind where morals become ambiguous. As a species of flexible ethics, it's not entirely unreasonable either. "Desperate times call for desperate measures" includes morally shady business.
“Your planet is incredible. It reminds me of the holo-videos of Earth before the last of the forests went extinct, and humanity switched to manufactured oxygen. I just can’t believe how perfect it is.”
Twilight walked over and put a hoof on my shoulder. “It must be a lot of pressure, trying to save your species. What are you thinking?” “Oh, nothing really. Just trying to figure out how to word a letter back that explains how terrible and scary this place is.”
remember treat your test subjects with respect if you want accurate feedback
though if it were me O’Neill would have two hoof shaped holes in his skull i'd like to see him not orgasm with something that big in his pussy

Ok, I'll admit that in the future, humans would probably be able to take all our waste, and turn it into new materials.food. However, there is still the problem with energy and waste heat. Feeding the 28 trillion people will require more energy to produce food than the current worldwide energy production.
700 years from now, we would have run out of fossil fuels and all sources of nuclear fission, so we would be reliant on nuclear fusion and renewable energy. Now, if we covered the entire planet with hyper-efficient solar panels, we would produce about 10% of the human population's energy needs for food alone. And that's not counting everything else we would need energy for, like keeping warm. And since all other renewable energy sources are replenished by the sun, the only other possibility would be nuclear fusion. We may be able to figure out a way to get more energy out of fusion than is put in.
It's Sci-Fi with advanced tech being talked about so that needs to be kept in mind when reading this sort of thing.
That still doesn't mean things can be handwaved away with terrible technobabble.
Also, this is hardly the first future story detailing a worst case scenario for man kind where morals become ambiguous.
And a liar is hardly the first person to tell un-truths. Your point?
As a species of flexible ethics, it's not entirely unreasonable either. "Desperate times call for desperate measures" includes morally shady business.
If we were to go down this route, we would almost certainly create one-child limit laws, such as in China, far before population would become such a big issue. There is no conceivable way people would allow the human population could grow that large if we had a government like the one you are suggesting.
Agh, dang it! I want a sequel to see this as more than just a one shot. Even if it's just one more chapter, or even the message Penny sends and the reactions!

NEW CHAPTER!
And done by Kaidan! Good job, buddy! I liked it a lot.
...
Why don't we have this technology yet?!
I'd risk the ferality. Totally.
That is the perfect ending. Thank you Kaidan
Take your time mate, and good story.
Perfect ending
i like it. humanity can fuck itself before it fucks up equestria
now i go back to listening to loyalty

I'm pretty sure they're lying, like with this one being the first test.

I think the "probe not landing" meant they could land any rovers or anything like that to go down and film the ground.
They could still detect the radiation from orbit though, just as satellites over Earth right now monitor the radiation coming off Earth
And as for 'we don't know the type, but we'll shoot some of it at the test subject' Eh, sciencey magicky wishy washy timey wimey... complicated stuff.
So... this is basically Project: Sunflower?
Meh, whatever. I liked it.

I had the damn thought that this chapter actualy needs t be an story of its own its pretty interresting.

Project Sunflower. Go read it. (I think this is based on that anyway.)
So this is what you've been up to while we've been waiting for Five Score
In retrospect I'd probably do the same. After seeing how perfect it is. I wouldn't want humanity getting an inch of yah place.
Agh, dang it! I want a sequel to see this as more than just a one shot. Even if it's just one more chapter, or even the message Penny sends and the reactions!
4064035 I agree we need a sequel
I would say nothing. Fuck those idiots back at earth.
Ok, now I KNOW Kaidan is the one who watches Stargate.
When I saw that reference in Five Score, I was skeptical. Do you watch it too, Spectrum?
THOSE STARGATE REFERENCES
Edit: after reading the comments: How did NOBODY else notice those???
And we've found a successor to Trollestia
This just sums up my reaction to this chapter/story.
Wait... The main characters name is "Pen"? Talk about coincidence
