Brooks & Warren on Showing & Telling · 5:16am Jul 21st, 2015

I say 1 A.M. Tuesday still counts as Monday. :derpytongue2:

I think I’m going to post part of the introduction to each chapter of Understanding Fiction by Brooks & Warren, 3rd edition (1979), to summarize their main ideas about fiction. This one is a digression, so you get it out of order. In the intro to chapter 3, “What Character Reveals”, they talk about showing versus telling while talking about characters.

"Show, don't tell" is sexist · 4:09am Mar 20th, 2017

My regular readers probably know by now that I am hardly the first person to cry “patriarchy!” However--and this seems incredible to me, owing to the popularity of the subject within the very den of third-wave feminism, English Literature departments--my Google-fu finds no other discussion of the issue, so it seems I am about to be just that:

“Show, don’t tell” is sexist.

The history of "show, don't tell" · 3:26am Mar 17th, 2016

I've collected instances of the advice "show, don't tell" from across time. Here they are, chronologically. I've blogged a couple of them before.

The Wikipedia page on "Show, don't tell" lists some more recent ones. (If you read that page, be aware that while Hemingway was a "show, don't tell" writer, "iceberg theory" is a claim about depth of backstory, not about "show, don't tell".)

Karaoke and Cannibals · 4:31am Feb 18th, 2018

I was going to sing karaoke tonight, but I got too drunk. Darn dang it!

In other news, unless I misheard, it appears that Twilight enjoys "Canterlot Cannibal", a series in the Restricted Section of the Canterlot Library. And who can blame her? Any pony would be interested in learning of the history of her capitol city.

Show vs. Tell in MLP songs · 1:39am Oct 19th, 2015

Back in 2013 and 2014, I wrote a lot of posts about showing and telling. Forget the subtleties for now. Here are the basics:

- "Showing" means depicting concrete actions, places, or things, or using poetic metaphors that are vivid and communicate more precisely than an equal number of words of literal description could.

Confucius on "show, don't tell" · 4:52pm Jan 20th, 2016

From "Confucianism and Chinese Art":

Confucius asked his students their ambitions. The first to answer said that he wanted to help weak countries get stronger. The second said he wanted his people to live a well-off life. The third said he wanted to be a master of ceremonies.

How did it become tradition for Yak cakes to contain vanilla extract in the first place when vanilla beans only grow in the tropics? Very suspicious if you ask me...

Writing: Show us the theme · 7:46pm Jan 16th, 2014

[I'm notifying people who favorited "The Corpse Bride" because I discuss it at the end.]

There is one part of every story that must be shown rather than told: The theme. If the theme is something that can be told better than it can be shown, then what you're looking at isn't a story.

A Dragon's Duality & SDT Revision · 12:42am May 22nd, 2017

Show, Don't Tell is still being revised, creativity simply had to come to me for me to start writing it.

A Dragon's Duality will be my main story for now, I simply enjoy the idea more than Show, Don't Tell. Whether once both are finished one is better is up to you.

SDT will most likely be a one chapter story that, as I said before, has a similar concept, but completely different outcome. It will be long and will only be as long as I deem it needs to be.

Happy reading!

FIRST COMMENT HERE WILL BECOME A STORY · 2:01am Aug 12th, 2016

Yeah I'm board and don't feel like writing my other 14 stories that I have (not submitted yet).

The first comment will be the plot, no matter what it is. Not smut or romance tho.

Second comment will be for the main character.

Third will be the point of view. (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc)

I will start writing tomorrow!

CHARACTER: spitfire!

We've almost gone full circle · 9:07pm Nov 4th, 2019

Short version: gonna work off the Writer's Rust and start writing off fan ideas starting this weekend. I got my own ideas but i want practice first so i want my watchers to post/pm me story ideas that i could write for them. If something sticks I'll write them a small private story. If something really sticks i may just make that idea they give me into an actual submission for the site.

What do you enjoy? · 3:32pm Aug 24th, 2015

Alright. Since there is now a 270% increase in probability that I'll soon be having complete (and edited) chapters out, I want to ask you crazy people who actually read what I write.

What do you enjoy in my stories? Which story of mine was the one that got you, which one do you like the most, and what scene would you say was the most memorable?

I am really curious, so please, tell me.

Also, I am sad that I got close to no responses to my idea for a Q&A chapter for "Hooves of ice."

The Power of Instrumental Music · 2:33am Jul 8th, 2017

The Power of Instrumental Music

I have found that in order for me to write the best quality first-drafts, I have to put myself in the most appropriate mood. To accomplish this, I have one simple strategy that often works more than not.

It’s actually a three step process, and it consists of the following required tasks:

1) Identify the genre in which I am trying to write

2) Find appropriate instrumental music that relates to what I’m trying to write

My thoughts after reading a very long book · 2:17pm Jul 21st, 2015

I just finished reading the first book in a trilogy yesterday. Devices and Desires, Book 1 of the Engineer Trilogy by K. J. Parker. The first book was a little over 600 pages long. It's not uncommon for people to take pride in completing things that, in the grand scheme of things, don't really matter. Finishing a video game, a TV show season, a really long book. Why do we do that, I wonder? Why do we sometimes push ourselves to finish something frivolous, even if we're not really
