Nightmare Night has again arrived, and Princess Luna, to honour a promise long made, visits the town of Ponyville and tells stories to those gathered. There is one pony which whose story has been requested over the years: Howard Fillip Lovecraft. Though Equestria is certainly a land of general happiness for all can gain purpose with confidence, the evidence ever present on the flanks of those that find it,but , this pony, the brother of Fluttershy, is crushed by his worthlessness in the world due to his lack of purpose. He is only left with the seeking knowledge in an attempt to mitigate his feelings. The need to find this sends him out over the lands, his only correspondence with that of Princess Luna through letters. However, the gaining of this knowledge is not necessarily what was desired.

North of bountiful Equestria and beyond the Crystal Empire lies an icy land of cryptic mystery. Its inner reaches have never been explored, but a Canterlot University expedition is set to change this. The plan is simple: penetrate the unknown depths of the Uncharted North and discover its most hidden secrets.

It's a noble undertaking, but a dark cloud looms on the horizon. Princess Luna's dreams have revealed a great but shadowy threat. To minimise the danger, Princess Celestia requests that her most loyal student, Twilight Sparkle, join the expedition and keep everypony safe. With the aid of her number one assistant, Spike, and mailmare Derpy Hooves, Twilight will attempt to do exactly that.

On the day of Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash's wedding, Princess Celestia left Twilight a message saying that she should prepare herself if something happens. The next morning, Twilight awakens to find that all of Ponyville has succumb to a blinding fog. She must now travel a monster-filled town in search for her teacher and friends and try to return Ponyville back to the way it was.

When Lance Strongshy's medical career is endangered due to relentless nightmares depriving him of sleep, his daughter Fluttershy once again overlooks the horrible past she suffered at his hooves and enlists the help of her friends to cure him. But, when the only sufficiently expedient solution turns out to be a certain spell that Twilight was instructed to never cast again, it becomes uncertain if their efforts will save him, or utterly destroy him.
