After her mother contracts a fatal illness, Charybdis, a young unicorn filly, ventures into the foreboding, malevolent forest of the Gloomwood to retrieve a cure. Coming with her is her "cousin," a kindhearted, book-loving changeling named Skia.
Thoraxis has become perfectly happy and content with his life in Ponyville, in the months following his "small" misadventure. His daughter, though, senses something missing, and sets him up on a blind date. With who just happens to be a wyvern.
Just a few days before Hearth's Warming, an unnatural blizzard lays siege on Ponyville, bringing a strange character into town with it. Serendipity, Thoraxis and Petra's blind daughter, and her visiting friend, Charybdis, decide to investigate.
