It's time ladies and gentlemen, it's time. Godzilla: King of the Monsters 2019 is just around the corner and is easily promising to be one of the biggest events in the entire genre. So far reviews have been mostly positive and the marketing hype train very strong. But let's also lament the road we took to get here. After Godzilla: Final Wars in 2004, we were told the series was going on hiatus with the possibility of another American production somewhere in a decade-long gap. A decade at least until we even had a chance at another Godzilla film. There were some things in between to help hold us over. We got a decent Gamera movie, that was sadly a standalone, for a time Cloverfield looked promising and was even briefly speculated to be the prophesied American production but that fell away, a few games and a few comics, but as time wore on it looked like the Big G wouldn't be making a triumphant return to the big screen. The speculated "Godzilla: 3-D to the Max!" IMAX feature that had been talked about briefly since the early 2000s was confirmed canceled, which seem to be the final nail.... Until it wasn't.
Around 2010 some word finally came out. Godzilla: 3-D to the Max! was indeed canceled, however elements of it and the production crew were being refitted by Legendary Pictures for a big screen, full on theatrical movie. After initially planning released in 2012 or 2013, in 2014 it finally happened. And it happened with roaring success. Godzilla 2014 was made to be a standalone film, but it's success despite some flaws inspired a new age for the kaiju genre that had up until then largely been on life support outside of television in Japan. Not only was Godzilla getting at least two new movies from Legendary with Toho's blessing, but Mothra, King Ghidorah, and Rodan were going to be the first Toho kaiju outside of the Big G to jump the Pacific and be in an American production. And, also called out of retirement was another legend. King Kong was back in the saddle and the moment people heard Legendary and Warner Bros. were handling it, everyone knew what was coming. Time for a rematch...
So let's appreciate all that has happened so far to get us here!
Disclaimer: Last streams we had a lot of people with mics chiming in. This is all well and good, in fact I loved the conversation. But I do have to ask we save big conversation to the spans between the movies, that way we don't have to try and understand what someone is saying and what the movie is saying at the same time.
