State of the Horizon: March 2019 · 6:35am Apr 3rd, 2019

First things first: A reader who wishes to remain anonymous has created some unique fan art inspired by Quiet Boy and Moon Horse! It's a Christmas ornament [1] [2] honoring the beautiful dark winged unicorn who pulls the moon across the sky. I can almost hear the sound of distant crickets.

Now, to follow up on last month's post about all the exciting things happening on the Horizon front!

The tl;dr: Well, March was a month that happened. :unsuresweetie: I got derailed pretty hard by the need to kickstart my job search into higher gear, and by a period of two weeks in a row where a bunch of crazy stuff happened back to back (including a Search & Rescue callout I didn't get home from until 5 AM, and helping a good friend through the discovery that his father has late-stage lung cancer), and I couldn't find a single free evening to go coffeeshopping. But I still made some progress on my ongoing projects -- and I think I'll do better at them if I get in the habit of progress reports.

So, what's been going on?

1. The Bronycon book project

There's a lot of behind-the-scenes work that goes into turning stories into books!

Most of that work's still to come, but the things that need to be figured out up front have been hashed through. The list of stories has been selected, and the title "Songs of the Sisters" has been tentatively chosen. I'm working with Nadnerb for cover art.

2. Devil May Care

Has been finished and run through prereaders, and now I just need to give it a little more polish based on that feedback and I can queue it up for the book (and later FIMFic publication).

3. Time Enough For Love

I pushed on from 25k to 27.5k, along with cleaning up the section around the Luna confrontation, and then hit a block when I tried to pick it back up after The Dead Weeks. In order to keep some semblance of momentum up, I shifted sideways to a different project; I've had some time to think about the corner I wrote myself into, and I'll go back to it with fresh eyes in another week or so.

4. Hard Reset 2

So, that other project I shifted sideways to? Yeah. :pinkiehappy:

I'm now up to three chapters (14,250 words) finished and banked (as well as some ninja edits to the final published chapter which I'll push and announce right before restarting publication): "Back in the Saddle", "Twin Prime Conjecture" and "Wait Training". About 2000 words into the next one, which hasn't been named yet but includes a tasteless joke about Mage Meadowbrook.

5. Back When Tigers Used To Smoke

Nothing to report. It's kind of taking a backseat to writing and jobseeking for the moment.

So, overall, certainly not the most productive month, but at least all the effort that got put in went into the important things!

[1] They first gave me a shout-out about it in January, but it took a while to get some good photos of the ornament assembled.
[2] I tried to use the built-in FIMFic [footnote] tag here, but it put the footnote in the summary it uses for the sidebar. So, back to manual entry. :-p

HARD RESET 2!!! YES!!!!!!!
:pinkiehappy::raritystarry::yay::twilightsmile:

Sounds exciting! I know that picking up a copy of TEFL will be among my top priorities at BronyCon.

I wish I could be even half as productive as you have been! (In the writing arena, at least.)

Are you going to BABS or EFNW?

That's nowhere near as high a bar as it sounds. :derpytongue2: Even if I count all the not-yet-published things mentioned in this post — and the 60k of anthologies posted to my account — your FIMFiction wordcount is higher than mine!

Someone didn't read the post tags :raritywink:

I will be at Babscon! Unfortunately, EFNW is the same weekend as BLFC and I'll be getting my furry con on. :( I'll also be at Bronycon though!

Guilty as charged :twilightsheepish:
See you at BABS and BronyCon. Have fun in Reno you furry weirdo. :rainbowwild:

If Smoking Tigers is back-burnered, you might want to post something there to at least let people know it isn't dead.

Fanart is always good! :yay:

HR2? Oh, that’s exciting! That’s probably number one on my list of stories I most want to see resurrected.

Now I'm wondering if HR2 will be the explanation for why Mage Meadowbrook went from being an eastern unicorn known for her eight magical items to being a Louisiana earth pony known for her healing concoctions. Clearly this is the work of time shenanigans!

"Time shenanigans" is to explaining plot contortions what bacon is to cooking. :ajsmug:
