My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic - Season 8 Episode 10: "The Break Up Breakdown" (SPOILERS) · 4:01pm May 19th, 2018

In which mixed signals nearly blow the S.S. SugarMac out of the water.

It's Hearts and Hooves Day.

The O&O Gang returns...to speed up the baking of a pie. Big Macintosh is trying to send Sugar Belle a H&H gift (he's sending a pie through the mail? Seriously?) and it's taking forever to bake, so he and Spike call upon Discord to microwave it.

...did...did Big Mac bake a card into a pie?!

Spike tries to convince Discord that H&HD isn't total BS. Derpy turns out to only be a small cog in a massive WHEEL of postal incompetence.

Thanks to the pony post, Big Mac's pie is delivered to the CMCs, who mistakenly think it's meant for Sweetie Belle since the label was completely smudged. This leads them to thinking Sweetie Belle has a secret admirer.

Meanwhile, Sugar Belle has arrived in Ponyville unexpectedly, and Spike and Discord overhear her planning some sort of H&H surprise...probably. They decide to go warn Big Mac.

While Spike and Discord are spying on Sugar Belle, Big Mac comes along, sees her, and gets all hearty-eyed. He jumps into the bushes with the other guys so Sugar Belle doesn't see him, and the three of them overhear her talking to Mrs. Cake. It sounds like she's trying to figure out how to break up with Big Mac, which...well...breaks Big Mac.

Spike desperately tries to cheer Big Mac up. Big Mac is drowning his sorrows in cider and blubbering like a giant red baby. Discord tries a more invasive approach, calling an "Emergency Guys' Night" and leading a crash course in Douchebag 101.

Meanwhile, the CMCs, having finished decorating the barn for Big Mac, are now pestering every colt in town, trying to find Sweetie Belle's nonexistent secret admirer. Button Mash makes a return appearance. Best moment is the "pleasesaynopleasesayno" mantra when Sweetie Belle questions Snips and Snails.

Back to the guys: Discord tries to cheer Big Mac up with an O&O session, but Big Mac is just too far gone. This leads to Spike's last-ditch effort to fix the situation: "If you hide from a problem, it can't find you."

While doing that in the hay in the barn, the guys overhear the CMCs gushing about how awesome Big Mac is for surprising Sugar Belle. With Discord whispering in his ear and twisting words around, Big Mac's heartbreak turns to anger, and he decides to break up with Sugar Belle first.

Only...Sugar Belle was never planning to break up with him at all.

Big Mac breaks up with Sugar Belle, leaving her in tears and with no explanation. He then mopes around Ponyville.

The CMCs get caught in the middle of Big Mac's roaming sulk, he snaps at Sweetie Belle, then clears his head and runs off to find Sugar Belle and talk it out. Once he actually talks to her, he finds out she was never going to break up with him--she's going to be in Ponyville, and she was talking about her wacky cousin who's going to be looking after her shop while she's apprenticing with Mrs. Cake.

The CMCs finally find out the "secret admirer pie" was actually for Sugar Belle, and have a big laugh about it.

And Discord and Spike...wrap the episode up by duding out together. And Spike, uhh...

Um.

Let's just say Spike has more in common with us bronies now. :twilightoops:

What else is there to say? This episode was AWESOME. 10/10.

Discord's Necrophiliac Dating Service

Treading a well-traveled road in terms of sitcom plots, but still enjoyable.

... Huh. It's not every day you like an episode more than I do. :applejackunsure:

Also Lyrabon moment ftw.

This is honestly one of my least favorite episodes of the season.
I'd much rather watch Non Compete Clause

Very nice episode.

Good to see the Coco Bongo and "Mask" Discord back, like the Lady and the Trump reference and also it seems Hasbro officially coupled Lyra and Bonbon.

Let's just say Spike has more in common with us bronies now. :twilightoops:

What do you mean by that?

well people certainly disagree with you.

Me as well.

non-compete clause: Rainbow and Applejack acting like idiots, puts students in danger and generally acts dumb whole episode in a non-funny way.

Break up breakdown: Funny and excellent characterization for spike, Discord and last, but not least, Big Mac.

And this is coming from someone who hates romance episodes in general.

also do I detect small hints of Fluttercord from the writers?

Because I fully approve of that ship.

It's an established fact that superfun's tastes in pony episodes are the exact opposite of everyone else's. We've all learned to just ignore him.

Non-Compete Clause: A low-key, but amusing enough episode, with the students being excellent.

Break up Breakdown: Painfully predictable, with the CMC being pointless, but enough comedy to make it good.

I get the feeling that two of the next three episodes will prove that statement to be VERY false.

II'm still kinda iffy on SugarMac, but this episode was cute for sure!

'amusing'

I mean... if you enjoy watching two main characters act out of character and be idiots, then the episode is ideal for you.

I'm mostly referring to the nature walk.
The two of them pretending to get along was the best kind of cringe comedy.

As a romantic episode, it was tolerable.

I expected a little more Three's Company style antics, but was pleasantly surprised. I would've been fooled by Sugar Belle's words. They certainly sounded like a break-up.

Big Mac's drinking spree is so redneck.

The funniest part of the eppy came when Sugar explained the whole situation. I actually laughed out loud when Mac said, "I gotta tell Spike!"

The CMCs were... a distraction. Yeah, not much added value there.

Discord's certainly changed over the past few years. Pre-Tirek, he probably would've messed with Big Mac throughout without much thought. He did show some heart by providing the catalyst for the make-up.

Overall, not terrible, but not an episode I'll be rushing to re-watch.

P.S.: I'm a little surprised DiscoFam didn't rerun A Royal Wedding this morning because there was an actual royal wedding at the time. I happened to be up for the couple's vows because the dog had to go out.

I just wish Fluttershy was in this episode.

If I had to guess

Spike: Ogres & Oubliettes? I thought you'd never ask! Oh, and... just wondering. No biggie, but... is Skelenor gonna be there?
Discord: Spike, she's an imaginary one-dimensional paper cutout skeleton.
Spike: Well, nopony's perfect.

Because after all, people who babble about being in love with imaginary two-dimensional cartoon pony characters ain't perfect, don't ya agree?

Bon Bon and Lyra confirmed OTP.

It was a little cringie the first time I watched it. But I have enjoy watching it a couple times more. I think the reason I didn't like it the first time was because I was really afraid that they where going to have Big Mac and Sugar Bell breakup. After I found out they were not going to breakup. I really enjoy the episode.

Lotta classic, funny, lovable Discord here, as well as funny Spike. I thought it was cute with Big Mac and Sugarbelle making up. Discord was a troll here. I found it funny that Spike wanted to date an imaginary paper cutout Skeleton who had student loan debt. Loved the shoutout to Fluttercord shippers.
