The next Pandemic story · 12:51pm Jan 26th, 2018
I wanted to make a brief update that I have started some work on the next story in terms of writing down ideas and notes. The creative process for me in approaching a new story is to simply jot down ideas as I think of them, usually of the ilk "wouldn't it be cool if ...". This can include some pretty wild stuff with no particular direction until I get deeper into it, then things start to take on more focus. At this point, I go back to those original ideas and decide "yeah, that would be cool" or "yeah, maybe, but not for this story" or "no, that's a dumb idea, forget it."
Some details can't really be thought of until I actually start writing, so at some point I have to decide whether I have enough material to start a first draft of the first few chapters. This generally tells me if I'm moving in the right direction or not. Often the first attempts are scrapped. The original Pandemic story underwent this process three times before I was happy with the results. Second Chances, Many Changes saw me get as far as six chapters into the original draft before I scrapped it and started over. I generally don't start posting chapters until I am satisfied with the direction it is taking.
I will be bringing back some of the characters from the first story, though not all of them. The remaining characters will be a mix of minor characters from the original story elevated to a more major role plus brand new characters.
I can't predict exactly when I will be ready to start posting for the new story, but I thought I would let everyone know that I was actively working on it.

I am getting closer to sitting down and writing something for the Pandemic universe. Nothing major, just the experience of someone/pony else elsewhere at the time of the first story. Most likely won't be more than two or three quick chapters, though things do tend to end up longer than I planned when writing. I have the basic plan for it, but still trying to determine how I want to deal with certain aspects of it.

Throw-away thought that I had while finishing reading the last few chapters of Pandemic: Humans like to study and figure things out, and while not quite as likely to do so, the ponies do as well. There is now working trans-universal portal technology that the humans are going to want to dig into and study. Similarly, Twilight Sparkle is likely to want to see what she can do with her discoveries. This will lead to opening the door to other, parallel universes.
Hot take: Imagine the reaction when the portal opens to the canon EQG universe, or any of an infinite number of universes where Sunset Shimmer, a.k.a. this universe's version of Pony Hitler, is the hero.

Seconded, she was my favorite character from the original followed by Sarah and our few bits with Heather.
I would love to know how the Crystal Ponies are going to fit into this new world. Yeah, they had a big purpose in the original, but going forward they seem kind of the odd ponies out. They don't have the same connection with growing things as the Earth Ponies do, and the need for them to amplify or redraft magic is at least centuries away.

Maybe they can grow crystal fruit that only they can eat? Have an uncanny ability to grow different types of crystals and are very protective of their farms? Or they just stand around making all the humans jealous of their natural beauty and are secretly taking over the world through beauty pageants... Somehow?
I wanna see that last one.

I would like to know about some of those pockets in the South that were mentioned near the end of Pandemic. As a southerner myself, I am awfully curious how and where these communities would spring up.
The pegasi near the coast will have their work cut out for them, I expect...
Can’t wait! If you happen to need some random background characters, you could use my OC Rainstorm Cloud. In my head cannon, she’s the head of the Dangerous Weather Department in Cloudsdale. Maybe she could teach the new earth ponies a thing or two 🤔

That would make for a very interesting side story especially if Twilight and Sunrise/Laura run into the heroic Canon Sunset.
