The Height of Ponies Confirmed · 2:07am Apr 10th, 2017

Check this pic out, it's pretty neat.

Although it might destroy some head canons on how tall ponies are, so proceed with caution.

Not my pic, found it in the writing help channel on the fimfiction discord server. There's a ton of nice folks there, and you can actually reach knighty if you have a serious question about an issue with the site.

4490369 Yeah, that's definitely another good one. To be honest, I had always assumed they were around four feet tall or so. Kinda cool to find all of these different size comparisons now that I'm actually looking for them.

I don't think it would be to devastating to most peoples headcannon as most people seem to put ponies around waist height, which would be around 3 ft.

this is the chart I was shown and I know of 3 authors that use this chart.

3.bp.blogspot.com/-Tq_cz8wV0Q0/U0jztYgNECI/AAAAAAABv2Y/AGbGhZ17pA8/s1600/my-little-pony-%D1%84%D1%8D%D0%BD%D0%B4%D0%BE%D0%BC%D1%8B-mlp-art-696908.png
PS you may have to open the photo in a new window as it is a bit large.

4490384 Looks like Celestia has been eating too much cake again.

Bitch is huge XD

to me they have always been around the size of a medium sized dog for average ponies, Luna and Cadance are about small-ish big dogs, then Celestia is the size of a Great Dan.

4490380 or some put them around the height of cats for the average pony.

4490384 Celestia is not a pony she's horse! lol

assuming thats how big an apple is

It's about where I picture them. I think of how if they rear back to stand bipedally that they would reach about 5 feet tall or so. Means that Lyra could be among us wearing a trenchcoat and we'd never know. :trixieshiftright:

1 apple = 4 inches. anyone familiar with equestrian terms will know that 4 inches is one hand. the official definition of a pony is any horse that is 14.2 hands or smaller. a horse is anything over 14.2 hands. the thing is, whoever did this forgot to realize that measurements are taken from the withers, not the top of the head. so, the actual measurement for their height is like two feet tall, or six hands, not 3'4", or 40 inches, or 10 hands. by that measurement, if twilight's withers come up to celestia's chest, which they do, according to this image and a ruler held up to the screen vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/mlp/images/6/69/Princess_Celestia_%22it_must%27ve_been_difficult%22_S4E01.png/revision/latest?cb=20131125154949 also, looking at that picture, celestia and twilight's barrels are about the same size. the only difference is that celestia's legs are twice as long as twilight's, with twilight's legs being the approximate height of her barrel, again, found out with a ruler to the screen. that would make celestia 3 feet tall at the withers.

these ponies are tiny.

4490401 If you measure them on a 21 inch computer monitor, then measure them again on a 60 inch TV, you're gonna have different measurements, though.

4490384 I can see that working.

4490380 Oh, I know. It was a bit of an exaggeration.

Ponyfinder's height charts tend to work well enough for me.

About what I'd guessed.

I was going by the size of Iron Will's goats, though. Apparently the show is shockingly consistent on this matter! :pinkiegasp:

4490369
But those aren't humans -- they are mutants with out of proportion limbs. They make for a horrible measurement system.

just going to way in here the show is could 'my LITTLE pony', not just 'my pony'.

jxj

That seems about right. There's a scene where twilight specifically calls out the height of something and you can set up ratios from that. I don't remember the exact values though.

There was also height speculation and measurements based on a barber shop pole way back when too. They're fucking tiny.

jxj

4490461 yeah that was it

4490384 Not a fan of that one. I think the ponies should be about six inches shorter, but it's not a bad scaling.

Sounds about right

But there's the always popular (I made this bullshit up) that could be different sized as compared to what we're used to. I'm tired I probably have no idea what I'm saying. Sorry.

This is assuming that equestrian apples are the same as earth apples, and that earth pony magic wouldn't yield larger apples.
Still, cool theory.

4490461 That gets us 3 ft. 5 inches for Fluttershy's height, counting her bouncy hair, compared to 3 ft, 4 inches for Applejack, and she is the same height as Fluttershy, so I think the candy-cane system and the Apple system are delivering the same result, give or take a single inch. Even the 3rd version used by 4490369 here has the top of Fluttershy's head at crotch height of her human counterpart, just as the candy cane version has the top of Applejack's head at crotch height with the default human male. All three methods of estimating pony heights seem to be delivering results that are almost identical to each other, which only reinforces their accuracy.

4490487 Totally the perfect snuggle size.

4490405 yeah, scale is a bit different, but if you base everything on a constant, in this case, the height of the apples being 4 inches, the ten stack of apples will always equal the same, whether or not it's a 60 inch tv or a 21 inch tv.

4490369 considering that's not a full grown human, yeah, that's tiny.

Most headcanons put then at 3-3.5 feet in height. Though the apple test isn't as good as the candy cane test.

I kinda like this. Nicely done

I've stood next to a miniature pony with dwarfism before. Her head came up to my knee!

Yes, the overriding problem with the Apple Theory is the base assumption that one apple is 4". If they are 5", then Applejack is 4'2". if they are 3", then she is 2'6"!
This is why I prefer the chart presented by 4490384. It is harder for me to notice flaws in their reasoning because they haven't shown their work, thus I avoid that nagging voice in the back of my head. :pinkiehappy: The other benefit to that chart is that is demonstates a pony's bulk. Big Mac is shorter but may still outweigh a fully grown adult human.

4490741
the rule of thumb I normally go buy is a pegasus is about 380 lbs and as Big Mac is a draft type pony that would put his weight around 700 lbs give or take a bit.
this is a rule that my self and the before mentioned authors use, this is in know way candid or conformed.
this is all based on the factor of height and the fact that I have personally razed and bread pony's for years.

4490746
Well, those numbers felt high to me, so I asked myself, "How much do you think they should weigh?" I came within about 100lbs of what you've got. (For the record, I was estimating based on volume.) That is close enough for me to say that I agree with your rough estimates.

It still feels high, though. Of course, my age is higher than it feels it should be, as well. So, I'm somewhat used to the feeling.

4490950
age :pinkiegasp: age :facehoof: lets talk about age I am 53. and have razed pony's and horses for over 30 years.
ok this little rant of mine is over.:scootangel:

4490384
The comparative size of Celestia's head vs. mine makes me uncomfortable. :rainbowderp:

I always put them between 3-4ft tall.

Why?

Dick sucking height.

4491389 Perfect dick sucking or clit licking height.

4491389
I like that answer, or if Celestia is facing away from you. lets just let you finger in out from their.

Definitely one way to tell the height. I wonder how many ponies tall a dragon would be since, y'know, it'd be multiplied.

4491081

have razed pony's and horses for over 30 years.

You MONSTER! :pinkiegasp:

How about something with less guesswork?

Like... none.
