What the hell is this · 6:58pm Aug 8th, 2016

So I went to Walgreen's to pick up something and came across this.

Culinary science, you've officially gone too far.

I bet it doesn't even taste like schezuan chicken.

Lays in a nutshell:

if it were General Tsao's Chicken, i'd go for it

You should check out Japanese Doritos.

Tzatziki I can understand; it's the same basic principle as sour cream and onion. But the rest? :pinkiesick: No. Just no.

probably doesnt

4138926 Totally agreed. I'd try that one! On that note, I'll wholly admit I tried the Greektown Gyro flavor, given that I love gyros and was curious.

They were... um... interesting. They didn't make me think of a gyro at all. They were that sort of flavor that's "not bad and I don't think I like it but I don't dislike it either", if that makes sense. :rainbowlaugh: More of a gimmick kind of snack than a "I'll have a bag of gyro lays with my sandwich, as usual!"

[edit] Hahaha. Relevant: "I ate the new Olympics-inspired Lays so you don't have to"

Chinese Szechuan Chicken -- Oh man these are bad.

These take nothing like chicken. They taste nothing like Szechuan pepper. They taste nothing like any Asian food I've ever had.

It took me a moment to place the flavors, and my brain may be going nuts (possible), but here it is: These taste like eating a fortune cookie covered in lukewarm soy sauce, washed down with a porter-style beer brewed and chipotle peppers.

Greek Tzatziki -- These ones are pretty good. They have a nice creamy Greek yogurt aspect to them and a nice flourish of dill. It's almost enough to overshadow the fact that these are pretty much just a spruced-up version of sour cream and onion. Almost.

Are you people kidding me?

How can anyone see "tikka masala" on something and not be like, "f*** it, I need those chips"? Seriously, I think I may have to go shopping today.

4138948 Don't get me wrong! I love chicken tikka masala! I just don't trust the chips to do the flavor justice. :trixieshiftright:

White Chocolate Pringles are a thing. They're totally evil so I have enclosed a .gif that isn't evil.

4138907 that's what I was thinking

4138911 pretty much, yeah

4138913 I dunno, I don't trust those weird chip flavors

4138915 That explains so much. I'm never clued into these product promotions, probably because I don't watch television.

4138919 I'm not sure I want to...

4138923 I'm Jewish. For you it may be the holiest day of the year, but for me it was Tuesday.

4138915

To be fair, the Ruben one was actually alright.

4138954 See, now that sounds like it could be good. Like a chocolate pretzel good sort of thing.

Not... whatever schezuan chicken Lays are supposed to be.

4138964 You've never read The Worst Things For Sale's entry on them have you? It's certainly quite vivid. :ajsmug:

4138966 I can't say that I have, no.

4138957 Yeah, the last batch was a contest. This batch seems to be "inspired by" (i.e. capitalizing on) the Olympics. :raritywink:

4138960 I can believe it! Didn't try it. The idea frightens me, but then again, a Gyro chip isn't all that different from a Reuben (both are... hearty meats), so I'm not surprised to hear that!

4138973 That's certainly something.

4138979 Honestly I'd find it weirder if they didn't try to capitalize on the Olympics.

I just wish they wouldn't do it in such a gustatorially offensive manner.

4138979

I wouldn't say it was exactly like it, but the flavorings/seasonings they used were fairly close. Easily the best of them, though. (Can't for the life of me recall which one won out)

...Shit, now I want a ruben...

this just now reminds me that BBQ flavored almond bars are a thing

the flavors really don't go together at all.

does anyone remember when lays released Chicken and Waffles potato chips?

they literally tasted and smelled like unleaded gasoline, i shit you not.

i'm wondering how much worse the szechuan chicken chips could be.

ON THE MOOOOON!

Myself, I saw cheddar cheese cup o noodles yesterday.

4138915 I tried the New York Rueben and the Kettle-cooked Greektown Gyro.

My reaction to both?

Bleah.

My GF brought a bag of those home the other day. No they don't taste like Szechuan Chicken, but they're okay. However, I legit liked the Brazilian spice flavored chips (the green bag, natch).

My preference for chips, though, will always be plain Cape Cod kettle chips. 3 ingredients: Potatoes, Canola Oil, Salt.

4139492 - I actually liked those flavors, the former moreso than the latter. I hated the white truffle flavor.

4139886 I was just caught so off-guard by the flavor I read.

You have no idea.

4139886 Well, to each their own, no?

And I never tried the other two, actually.

And I mentioned the "Biscuits and Gravy" ones to my sis in passing when they first came out, knowing how much she likes biscuits and gravy whenever we eat at places like Cracker Barrel and IHOP.

HER response?

"Thank you, no."

Her exact words.

C'mon, Lays, give me a flavor I'll actually eat, not this.:facehoof: I'll just stick with classic, BBQ, and Sour Cream and Onion lays.

4139927 I tried the Biscuit and Gravy ones, they were actually fairly good.

DEFINITELY better than IHOP's service (though that's not hard to do, McDonalds had better service last time I went.)

DEFINITELY better than IHOP's service

don't even get me started

I had to wait three hours one time for pancakes when i was 10

two guys at the table next to me complained on my behalf

4140139 Really? Hmmm, I might have to try them if they're still around then.

And I hear ya there.

Although the service at the one here in Wentzville actually isn't too bad.

4140148 I've got one to trump that.

We went to one of our local Cracker Barrels for dinner one evening, and not ONLY did it take them FOREVER to even take our orders, it took us even longer to finally GET them!

And then on TOP of all THAT, they got half of them wrong!

Also, they took so long with EVERYONE that the people at one of the tables near us just got up and walked out after ordering their food.

So yeah.

An update:

I have now purchased the Szechuan chicken and tikka masala chips. They taste pretty much like you'd expect---like things with Szechuan and tikka masala seasoning, respectively.

I have no problem with this. I will probably continue buying the tikka masala chips to encourage their continued production. America needs more curry-flavored things.

Send me some and I'll tell you if they're authentic or not.

Majin Syeekoh

4141379 I didn't actually purchase them.

The price fell outside of my budget.

4141391
$1.50 is too much for chips?

Majin Syeekoh
Moderator

4141536 Yeah.

Sucks to be me, don't it?

4141557
I will buy you a bag of chips.

4141601 Oh shit.

I might have to take you up on that.

4141601 I'll pitch in 75 cents so majin can taste test them bad boys.

pics or it's not real.

They taste like over cooked barbecue sauce mixed with coarse ground mustard and paprika.

Don't ask why I know that.
