Meh.
It's time we got to season six's core theme of "Explore Equestria!"
...by going someplace we've been a couple of times now: Manehattan.
Rarity's apparently doing VERY well in Canterlot, because she's opening a third boutique in Manehattan.
Cold open has a repeat of a visual gag from a while back.
Getting off the train in Manehattan, Pinkie and Rarity run straight into Maud. Hi Maud!
So the Pie Sisters have a tradition of a "Pie Sisters Swap Day" where they swap random gifts. Pinkie always "loses" PSSD to Maud, so she wants Rarity to help her pick the perfect gift for Maud.
You know those eps where Pinkie is REALLY annoying? This is one of them.
Okay, the parody of "Big" made up for the rest of this episode. 
...that and Maud's "Boulder says they're all too stuck-up."
Anyone got flashbacks to Fluttershy and the tomato vendor here?

Okay, so let's get it out of the way:
This is not a good episode. I'm sorry, it really isn't.
It's a very forced rehash of a very old story that's been done to death.
Maud's antics and Rarity being...REALLY WEIRD for Rarity almost saved the episode, but frankly, it's just a weak episode.
Episode had Maud, I can at least enjoy that.

It's better than last season's third episode, but when you title your episode after "GIft of The Magi" you look really stupid when you only do half of the plot correctly.
Pinkie? annoying?
I politely disagree, I found her antics hilarious and her faces funny as ever.
It's an okay episode. Yeah the moral of the story was easy to see a thousand miles away. I think what could have made it great would be if Pinkie got arrested for all the public disturbance and the fact she more or least assault a cop.
Otherwise nice portrait of the big city smuggler, very stereotypical, but effective nonetheless.
I think it's okay.

Yeah I know. I should have written "more or less" but I've heard it mispronounced so often, I'm writing it wrong.
As for smuggler. I know it someone who practice in illegal import/export activities, but I kind use it personally for about anyone who is in any kind of shady business. And besides, calling the pony a crook or a bandit from get-go wouldn't seem correct since there was nothing to tell him.
Though sometimes I wonder if I should switch to US English dictionary, rather than staying on my British English dictionary when I type on this site.
This will probably not make most critic's Top 10 episodes of S6.
But bonus points for "Maud Sense." I am curious to know what "Marble Sense" and "Limestone Sense" will turn out to be.

Poor pinkie had to sell her party cannon . Human pinkie made hers so she can at least make a new one but poor pony pinkie lacks the hands to do so

I felt the fact that they didn't do the standard "Gift of the Magi" plot, but instead added a bit of a twist to it, to be refreshing.
Heck, I enjoyed it a LOT more than the other two Manehatten episodes.

3844444 How would it matter either way? Whether or not Pinkie made it herself, a pony made it just like ponies make everything else ponies use.
3844552 if pinkie didnt make it herself then theres a 1 in 3 chance a unicorn made it which would mean they used magic that allows much more control and access to small spaces than hooves. Not only that but one of the many creatures with claws like gryphons, dragons, etc could have made it which again allow more control than hooves

3844602 yes they've built alot of things that don't have many small, carefully arranged parts without magic but the firing mechanism on the party cannon is probably more complex than hold it up and nail it down unlike the examples you gave and could have alot of small carefully arranged parts that would be quite difficult to build by hoof due to hooves being too large to place in one part without accidentally moving another part out of place

3844675 you win with the party cave since I couldn't see the mechanism beyond the ice cream cone and the piano since the size of hooves should hit like 3 keys at a time but Time Turner seemed to only have knob, button, and lever controlled machines in his lab, all of which are easily used by hoof, and most of the string instruments we've seen use bows to play except guitar and harp but for harp Lyra is a unicorn and with guitar applejack seemed to use the corner of her hoof to strum but I have no idea how her other hoof didn't hold down every chord

None of what I just said goes against the argument that it would be difficult to build a firing mechanism with hooves but I'm done. Im wondering how pinkie loads that cannon though since it can set tables and launch confetti with enough force to do damage yet it does no damage to ponies at point blank range
3844796 Maybe because it's a cartoon about magical talking horses who can do things with their hooves that real horses can?
Maud's wink made me laugh out loud, so the episode had that going for it.

Who knew Maud could be so intimidating with that "fiery gaze"? I'd hate to see her on a bad day.
And I thought it was a fuzzy little ep, though they could've done a bit better with the gift part.
These new writers aren't wowing me so far, and they've been given multiple episodes to write for season 6...yeah.
