The Art of Weather Reporting · 7:05pm May 24th, 2014
Dear Rainbow Fans
My new Rainbow Dash story is now out:
This is my depiction of the world of Equestrian journalism, pegasus weather management, and the story of Filly Dash at summer flight camp. This is based on old ideas which I developed for The Art of Rainbow Engineering, and (as I mentioned in my last blog post) Rainbooms and Rationality, but then didn’t use for those stories.
After finishing Rock Farms and Nuclear Reactors, I was feeling like that I had eaten an large amount of sugar leaving a sticky sweet taste in my mouth. So I resolved to take a break from Pinkie Pie. My next story would be about Rainbow Dash. The thought of a nice clean, high altitude adventure, swooping among the clouds was very appealing. (As it happened, Maud Pie managed to force her sister back into my repertoire sooner than expected with Domestic Rock Science - you just can't escape that pink pony). Among my notes I had some ideas about industrial action at the weather factory; and the history of the sonic rainboom...
This one is a bit experimental – as far as I am aware no one else has done an epistolary pony fic quite like this – so comments are especially welcome. If anyone has any technical issues with the very large images, let me know. I was actually quite pleased with how it looks on my screen - credit to Knighty for good site design - but I don’t know how well it will work with lower resolution gadgets. I’m also curious to know if this works as a story, instead of just a collection of articles. I guess you can’t judge that until I upload the rest. There will be eight chapters in total – I aim to get another two published today, then the final two instalments tomorrow.
Something I thought of for a story--weather-related-- is that lightning is caused by a difference in magical potential in the sky vs. on the ground. Pegasus magic infuses the clouds, and earth pony magic soaks into the ground. The longer it is between storms, the more pronounced the lightning.
Well, I'll admit I haven't really noticed any narrative thread yet. Maybe the new chapters and/or a second read will help, though.
