Even more than smiles, there is one thing that Pinkie Pie wants more than anything in the world. Twice she has tried, and twice she has been brought to the precipice of success, only to see everything ripped from her at the last moment.

Nightmare Moon has been defeated, Princess Luna has returned, and young Twilight Sparkle is about to begin a new chapter in life. But, as she prepares to move to Ponyville, she's still not sure whether she should go at all, or what she's supposed to learn when she gets there. How can she solve a problem with no clear definition? If she does find an answer, will she even recognize it when she does?

An expanded and revised version of my entry in the August Minific Writeoff, which carried the prompt 'Famous Last Words'.

Her show rejected and her reputation in ruins, Trixie returns to Canterlot in search of one more chance to prove her ability as a unicorn and showmare. But can she swallow her pride long enough to accept an offer from the one pony that she never expected to see again?

Flight. A common part of life in Equestria, yet something that only the pegasi truly know and understand. Twilight has spent years watching her winged friends from the fields of Ponyville, and gazing at the stars from her balcony. But for one night, Twilight trades her notebook for the clouds, and her telescope for the stars themselves.

Twilight already knows what flight is. Tonight, she'll learn what it's like to fly.

There are two sides to every city. There's the one that the tourists and the magazines see, but there's another, much darker side, that lurks beneath the surface. Pinkie saw that darker side on full display in Manehattan, and it has changed her view on a lot of things. After returning to Ponyville, Pinkie goes to her family's rock farm to have a talk with her sister, Inkie, who has a new cutie mark on her flank...

...and Manehattan's lights in her eyes.

They say that the apple never falls far from the tree. As the only member of the Apple family to forsake the family's agrarian ways, however, Applejack is perhaps the lone exception to that rule. Instead of returning to Ponyville, Applejack found her calling in the bright lights of Manehattan, and has called it home ever since.

She may be an Apple by blood, but she is about as far away from the tree as she can get. And she likes it that way.
