Well damn I'm glad you noticed cause this is taking Hella long for a side story. This is more like a whole Prequel then a side story. Oh well good story though.

The story does what the story wants, I just write it.

The best stories are always like that

To paraphrase Tolkien: "The story grew with the telling."
Something this chapter has made me realize, is how Tempest and Rose have gradually switched places over the course of the story. Once upon a time, Rose would be the one having a breakdown over the hopelessness of their situation, while Tempest remained stoic and unflinching. Now, it's the opposite. Tempest has gradually warmed up and opened herself emotionally towards Rose, while she has started to close herself off even more.
They might still be on the same side, and still partners, but the fact that all Rose feels as Tempest hugs her and weeps is disappointment just speaks volumes about where she is mentally.
I felt genuine disgust upon reading this. Here's this pony showing vulnerability for the very first time in ages, letting the mask slip for just a moment to express weeks worth of stress, and all Rose feels is pity. Not empathy, not understanding, just pity and borderline-resentment. It's the first time I've felt actual, real anger towards Rose this entire story. All the other cases of her being an ass-hat, I merely felt bad for her. This? I feel anger. Well done, Remedy.
Somewhere in Ponyville, a train has just arrived, a colt has lost his brother, and the end of this whole mess has begun.
She has no idea how right she is. Death and monsters are going to follow those two right back to Cloudsdale. It's great seeing these little moments that carry over into the main story.
It is my hope that at the end of all this that Tempest makes it and Rose doesn't. But i don't want Tempest to help the Storm King either...
Poor rose is so delusional, that she doesn't realize, she gave into that darkness the moment she murdered Parade.
They're all dead because of you Rose. Parade is dead because you murdered her, Bulwark is dead because you killed him, and your captain as well, you killed them because you literally flew to close to the sun. And that window but the point still stands, that your actions are their cause of death. At least when Icarus did it he had the courtesy not to smack Daedalus on the way down.

No if you reread AHF, Spitfire was thinking about how she missed him in cloudsdale.
I can only imagine what details and ideas will carry over to the sequel. Perhaps it would be Rose leading the Storm King's forces instead of Tempest, her deluded and broken mind believing that the best way to save Equestria is to destroy it all.
I still remember when at the end of one of the first chapters you had written "This story would have a maximum of 75,000 words", I knew that was a lie, but I will not judge, I will just enjoy the rest of this story
At this point, I foresee three scenarios:
1st Scenario:
Ponies will see the Storm King as a Viable Alternative to the Alicorn Diarch rule. Ponies will then rally to the Storm King in order to overthrow Celestia and Luna.
2nd Scenario:
Ponies will see the Storm King as a great threat to Equestria and so they will unite (including the Unicorns) to defeat him. Whilst bloody this will have an unexpected effect of mending the bonds broken by the plague.
3rd Scenario:
Equestria fractures into separate warring states. One will be held and governed by the Storm King. One will be held by those who remain Loyal to the Alicorn Diarch. One will be held by a faction made up mostly of Earth pony and Pegasi that will exclude Unicorns. There also is a possibility that Twilight breaks away from Celestia and Luna to reconquer Equestria under her idea of Harmony. I also haven't discounted the possibility of Foreigners taking (Directly or Indirectly) Equestrian territory in order to recompense what they've lost.
Iām still curious if the turned unicorns have any biological imperatives at all besides sleeping. Youāve shown them sleeping, but besides that, it seems that they donāt need to eat (other than occasional non-unicorn cannibalism), drink, excrete, or metabolize in any way at all. They can withstand the extreme heat indefinitely seemingly without needing to replenish fluid or find shade to regulate their body temperature. As far as survivors are concerned, theyāre immortal (though not invincible, since they can be harmed or killed with the use of force).
Iām surprised Tempest, at least, doesnāt raise these points with Rose, as establishing these details is of paramount importance if the Storm Kingās invasion is ever to succeed.
What was Bullionās end game here? Would the world simply be populated by monstrous unicorns in perpetuity? Do these creatures have a drive to reproduce, or would the same set of creatures simply live in the burned out husk of Equestria forever?
Yep Iām calling it she gone full cult follower mode

Why not kill them both?
11752284
Explain please?

Huh, Iām interested in 1st and 3rd one but I think mostly third since it does combine them all.
But still āwe rise from the ashes to protect those that remainā
And now we know what caused the fall or one of the things that caused cloudsdale to fall.
And now I blame spitfire well a little bit but still for not having a back up plan in case they were spotted by two biological walking nukes with wings.
Still blame most of it on rose though
Well yes but actually no but mostly yes sort of
