A logistical nightmare and a lot of compromises on both sides, to be sure. And a lot of ponies upset on everyone's behalf on both sides of the river.
At... least a month. There's four current chapters that need to be pretty heavily rewritten and may involve breaking up two massive 12k word chapters into four ... possibly 8k word chapters by the time I'm done (I just know how my brain works.)
And some current time Carnation uh... er... RIGHT NOW! *poof*
The end is interesting. It looks like Celestia didnt just have Carnation sitting around. She put her to work.

I'm not going to go into the backstory of why she did in story, so I figure it's okay to share here.
A part of it was her need to do something in her post-exile life. A part of it was Celestia recognizing a source of intelligence and a pony familiar with both sides of the river who could give context to Firelight's reports, as well as reports from other assets she has in place. Celestia, over the centuries, has lost touch with the culture of both cities as it's grown up and diverged.
Carnation is an opportunity to reconnect and gain perspective now that a ruler in at least one of the cities has ceased hostilities, she might actually see the end of the war in the four and a bit centuries it's been active. Since she was a spy for Lace, she's familiar with both sides of the conflict.
It's still weird to think that for all Lace is behind the decisions our foursome is making, she's still super awkward around romance stuff. ...Dapper is gonna make so much fun of her, isn't he.
Evil Horse Mom would fight the freaking Sun from rising if it wasn't controlled by Celestia and would get her laser blasted to space.
These poor kids never get to celebrate anything. :(
God, poor Rosewater...to finally be free to feel that kind of sadness...I can't even imagine how good and terrible it feels.
Hmmm...talk about complicated. I do think Carnation being a Mom to Rosewater is more important (because....well, the obvious), as she needs that stability more than anything. But being seen as a co-parent probably also helped more than she thinks.
But! Hopefully now that one big step has been taken, the Road to the Gala can really be run!
