Twilight stood in front of Celestia’s office. She had been called in after school for something very important.
“What if she wants me to leave the school? What if she no longer wants me to be her student? What if she banished me from Equestria!?” Twilight said as she paced in front of the office door. She shook her head and faced the door.
“Whatever Princess Celestia has in store for me, I’m sure she’s right.” Twilight reassured herself. She opened the door slowly and cautiously. Celestia looked up from her desk and smiled when she saw her star pupil.
“Ah Twilight, come in.” Celestia said kindly. Twilight hastly aproached the desk. As she sat down she heard...... growling?
“As you know, you are my star pupil. You are above all of you’re classes and hatched an owl egg when no one else could.” She started off. Twilight smiled at her praise.
“I have a very important task for you that I cannot trust anyone else with.” Celestia continued.
“Yes Princess, what is it?” Twilight said eagerly. Celestia’s horn glowed as she levitated a small dragon from behind her desk. Twilights eyes widenened and her jaw dropped open.
“I need you to take care of him. He is alone and is to young to be by himself.” Celestia explained. Twilight looked at the dragon who was glaring at her.
“I don’t mean to be rude Princess, but why must I take care of a dragon. I'm only thirteen, I don’t think I’m responsible enough to take care of a child.” Twilight said.
Celestia chuckled at Twilights response. “I am far to busy to watch him and I trust you enough to watch him.” She responded. “His name is Spike and I packed a bag with things that he needs. If this doesn’t work, then you can bring him back to me and I’ll relocate him.” Celestia instructed.
Twilight looked Celestia wearily and let out a sigh. “I respect your choices Princess.”
Celestia smiled and handed Spike to Twilight. He wore a yellow backpack. Spike let out a growl and backed up to Celestia’s desk. “It’s okay, she won’t hurt you.” Celestia reassured while pushing him back to Twilight. Spike glared at Twilight, clutching onto Starry protectively.
Twilight levitated Spike on her back. Spike sat down stiffly, obviously not trusting her. Twilight made her her way out of the office.
“Have a wonderful spring break!” Celestia shouted before the door closed.
Okay, stay calm. I only have a week until I can give him back. I can just tell the Princess that it didn’t work out and she can send him back were he came from.” Twilight thought to herself. She looked back at Spike, who was still glaring daggers at her.
Twilight shuddered as she felt him stare. “This is going to be a long week.”
Twilight walked in her house, closing the door behind her. “Mom, Dad I’m home!” Twilight shouted making Spike flinch.
“I’m in the kitchen!” Velvet responded. Twilight put Spike on the floor and made her way to the kitchen. Owlicious was perched the counter as Velvet chopped carrots.
“How was your day sweetie?” Velvet asked.
Twilight hesitated before speaking.
“Today was great but...” Twilight trailed off.
“If it’s those bullies again, I will take them down myself.” Velvet threatened.
“No it nothing like that. Princess Celestia gave me a... mission. She wants me to take care of a.... a dragon.”
Velvet dropped the knife on the counter in shock. Owlicous feathers fluffed up in fear.
“A-a dragon. Aren’t dragons big, violent creatures.” Velvet asked nervously.
“He’s only five and he’s all alone.” Twilight explained. Velvet let out a sigh.
“Well if Princess Celestia trust you with this task, then I trust you.” Velvet said.
“Would you like to meet him, he’s in the living room.” Twilight asked. Velvet nodded her head and made her way to the living room. Spike sat on the floor while playing with Starry.
“Hello.” Velvet said softly. Spike turned around and growled. Velvet took a step closer, making Spike hide under a nearby table. Velvet walked over to the table, crouching down to his height.
“It’s okay, I won’t hurt you.” Velvet said softly. Spike hissed and swiped his claw. Velvet flinched and moved back.
“You’re father and brother will be home any minute, they'll handle this.” Velvet said as she walked away from the table.
Twilight nodded her head in understanding. Owlicous flew next to Twilight and rubbed his head against her hoof.
“I’m sorry I’ve been so busy lately.” Twilight said while petting Owlicous head. Everyone’s ears perked up when the front door opened.
“We’re home!” Night Light shouted. Shining Armor stood next to his father. Spike growled and moved farther under the table. Night Light and Shining Armor jumped back at the sudden noise.
“What heck was that?” Shining Armor asked in fear.
“That was Spike. Princess Celestia assigned me to watch a dragon.” Twilight said in a exasperated tone. Night Light and Shining Armor slowly backed away from the table.
“Well he is full of... energy? I guess.” Night Light said, trying to be optimistic. Shining Armor glanced at Spike who was glaring back at him.
“Do you even know how to take care of a dragon?” Shining Armor asked in a concerned tone.
Twilight looked over to Spike. “No, but Princess Celestia gave me a bag with all the things I need.” Twilight said in a ‘’matter of fact’ tone. Shining Armor looked around as if he were looking for something.
“And where is that bag?” Twilight looked around. Her eyes widened in realization. “It’s with Spike.”
Everyone turned to Spike, who was still growling softly. Twilight carefully walked over to him and slowly put her hoof out. “Is it okay if I just...” She said as she tried to grab the bag. Spike hissed and swatted her hoof away.
Twilight flinched back and cradled her hoof.
Shining Armor rushed to her side. “Twily are you okay?!” He asked with panic lacing his voice. Twilight tested up a little bit.
“Y-yeah I’m fine it’s just a little scratch.” She said reassuringly.
“I’ll go get them bandages.” Shining Armor said while rushing out the room. He glared at Spike on his way out.
Tears rolled down Twilights cheek at her hoof throbbed in pain. Spike felt a pang in his heart as he saw her cry.
Shining Armor walked back in the room with a bandaid. He levitated Twilights hoof and put it on.
“There all better.” He said proudly. Twilight smiled at her brothers enthusiasm. She felt a light tug on her tail that made her look back.
Spike stood there holding his bag up to her. His eyes didn’t meet her gaze. Twilight smiled.
“Now we’re making progress!”
I haven't jumped into it yet, but the prose looked pretty decent. One thing I noticed however were the number of times the paragraph started out with 'Celestia...' Seriously, the first four paragraphs. I thought it was amusing.

I realized I have a bad habit of starting a paragraph with someone’s name
So... Should this story be called "What if Spike had a spine"?
She would.
That was a rather rushed transaction. Not a whole lotta consent involved either.
"You wanted to see me, Princess?"
"Yes. Here's a dragon, I want you to take him home and foster him. Won't the rest of your family be surprised!"
"What!? I guess I can, but--"
"Good, now shoo-shoo, outta my office."
"Okay, but are you sure this is--"
"Enjoy your spring break, byyyyyye!"
Two suggestions. One it’s best to avoid the phrase “as you know” because it signals that what follows is going to be exposition that doesn’t make much sense for the character to say unless it’s part of a presentation. Two Celestia would come off as less negligent if she was giving Spike to Velvet and Light, and then Twilight was excited by having a chance to help, or study a baby dragon up close. As stands Celestia is giving a child capable of violence who has trust issues to a group of people with little to no introduction, and while Spike hasn’t shown any major abandonment issues, this is the kind of thing that could lead to them.

- And this just became less of an AU! I like it!
- Should be "too young".I
- Why did you find down her hero-worship like that? Not saying there might not her a good reason, I am curious.
-You don't actually seem to have Celestia mentioning any specific time period. Maybe you edited Celestia's words and forgot to fix this to match?
-I'm seeing a weird line-wrap problem here that don't showmup.when I quote it.
- meet
-She isn't a mistress of telekinesis yet? Or would that be something she would consider aggressive compared to using her hooves and/or mouth?
