When Sunset came to, the entire room had begun to spin. She closed her eyes, feeling nauseous.
She then realized there was a warm pressure on her stomach. She opened her eyes - slowly - and saw a familiar green and purple dog staring at her with large concerned eyes.
"Hi." Spike said, smiling gently.
"....Hi." Sunset replied, her mouth feeling like it was full of cotton. She tried to pet Spike, but it was hard to do with thick gauze wrapped around her palms, so she settled with gently patting him on the back.
"How are you feeling?" asked a voice on her left. She didn't need to turn around to see who it was.
"Could be better." Sunset said thickly. She turned to her right deciding to gaze out the window. "What are you doing here?"
"Flash wrote me. He said something about how he had 'effed up'" Sunset imagined Twilight making quotation marks "and that you were in trouble."
Sunset gave a small snort of laughter. That was certainly one way of putting it.
"Of course, I was thinking about coming anyway." Twilight said, her voice becoming more serious. "If for no other reason, then to see if you weren't dead."
Sunset sighed, knowing where this was going. "I've been busy."
"So have I. But I still made time. Actually, I take that back. You did write me that one note." Sunset heard the sound of Twilight digging through random objects, and then pages turning. Twilight cleared her throat as she read the passage aloud:
The real Anon-A-Miss has been found. My friends know it wasn't me. Everything's fine.
Sunset flinched as she heard the book snap shut. She could feel Twilight's glare on the back of her bandaged head. "That's it? No details? No names? Did you really think I wouldn't get suspicious?" Silence. "Sunset, would you look at me?"
Sunset squeezed her eyes shut. "Twilight, can we please just drop this?"
"No." Sunset felt a hand grip her cheek and her head was forcibly turned around. Twilight Sparkle glared at her, unshed tears shining in her angry and hurt eyes. "You don't get to do this. You don't get to just...ignore me, and shut me out for two months, making me think you were hurt or dead, and then when I show up and find you bleeding from self-inflicted wounds, you lie to my face and try to tell me everything's ok. You don't get to do that." Twilight's voice began to shake with emotion. "Because it's not ok. You're not ok. And you know it!"
Sunset's lips trembled as she struggled not to cry. "I'm sorry I was such a burden to you...."
Twilight sighed, releasing Sunset's face, then slumped back in her chair, her hand covering her face. "That's not what I meant....."
A single tear slid down Sunset's cheek. Spike reached out his paw and wiped it away. Sunset gently grasped the paw in her hand and gave a shaky smile.
"Sunset....why didn't you tell me all this was going on?" Twilight asked wearily.
Sunset went back to patting Spike absentmindedly. "You would've tried to fix it. You can't fix this."
"I could've listened." Twilight said softly. "I could've been a sympathetic ear. You wouldn't have had to carry this around all this time."
Sunset said nothing.
"Of course, maybe I could've fixed it." Twilight said, running her hand through her hair. "If I'd figured it out-"
"Twilight." Spike stated. "This isn't. Your fault."
Sunset furrowed her brow, confused. Spike told her about the Gabby Gums incident back in Equestria. Sunset just shrugged and slumped back against the bed. "He's right. This isn't your fault. And it wouldn't have mattered; they wouldn't have believed me if I told them, anyway."
Twilight tried to protest, but fell silent, knowing she was right.
"It never changes." Sunset said, her voice shaking. "No matter what I do, it's never enough. Nobody cares...."
"I care." Twilight stressed, grasping Sunset's hand, mindful of the bandages. "It's enough for me. You know that, right?"
Sunset didn't answer. Slowly, she withdrew her hand and turned her head back to the window.
Twilight's shoulders slumped, and she bowed her head in despair. She stood up and stuffed her journal back into her backpack, and Spike, after one long sad look at Sunset, jumped of the bed and climbed into her backpack.
As Twilight's hand wrapped around the doorknob, she tried one last time. "I spoke with Celestia after the Fall Formal. I told her what happened. In Equestria, your punishment for your actions has been officially written as exile, until she sees you fit to return."
Sunset said nothing, but Twilight knew she had gotten her attention.
"Sunset, as far as Celestia, Equestria, and myself are concerned, your sentence has been served. You can return to Equestria anytime you wish. You will be welcomed with open arms."
Silence. And then, softly, ".....I'll think about it."
Knowing there was nothing left to say or do, Twilight open the door, and walked out.
I was expecting the confrontation with Sunset and Twilight to be longer, but I still enjoyed it regardless.
I do wonder how this story will play out now, will Sunset return to Equestria, will she stay in the Human World?, I have no idea. It's like the Human World is her home, but at this moment, it isn't.
But Sunset didn't even get a hug!

I always figured that the only reason why Sunset stayed in the Human world after the 1st movie was because of her "Friends"; otherwise, she probably would have ended up taking her chances back in Equestria sooner or later.
If she doesn't have any strong bonds left with any of her "friends" then the logical choice would be to jump through the portal with Twilight, either permanently or until she gets her head straightened out.
If Celestia found out what happen she come running thru the portal stumble fall and get up and rush to Susnet side and hug her bawling her eyes out.
Oh boy, I'm really invested in this. Sunset is so sad and it's a horribly relatable sadness which makes me sad.
There's nothing to think about, Sunny.
Just grab your belongings and return home, to your true friends, to your mentor.
7490547 I agree, for ones I like to see a story where she goes back to equestria
I could literally feel the emotion when read this part, super sad.
i'm kinda hoping to see Sunset stay in Twilight's world, away from the Humane 5. feeling for her

Poor Sunset. Figured out that the reason why they had her as suspect number #1 cause her actions of the past lingers on them and they refuse to (the title of that catchy Disney song that; IMC, shall forever remain nameless).
But, hopefully she follows her heart and makes the choice that it tells her.
...go home Sunset. There's nothing for you here...
7496300
......Right now, Sunset feels like there's nothing for her anywhere.....
7496303 Hitting close to home. School does that to you, or rather the people there. Perhaps is relatability that keeps me coming back to Anon-a-miss fics.
Will she return home?
Or perhaps... stay?
We shall find out next time!
Good show
Hella bread
So in the end, it was Twilight Sparkle who was truly wronged! The one person who is completely blameless in all of this!
I'm still picturing Celestia running through the statute yelling "where's my baby!?" in a deep demonic voice
8929109
Omg yes I would pay to see that
8929109
Celestia in Daybreaker form would be flipping terrifying
8998613
Omg 😲 I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THAT
I think I was premature a couple chapters ago. We've gone off the rails a bit.
It's so easy to apply our own perceptions about justice and repercussions to situations like this. It's easy to forget that the whole message of the show is ultimately one of understanding and forgiveness. I mean, look at the end of the first movie. Sunset had just finished trying to kill them. It was an actual, honest attempt. And what does Twilight do as Sunset crawls out of the crater? She offers her a hand to help her out.
This story, and others like it, seems to have forgotten that message.

What YOU seem to have forgotten is that the Humane Five forgot this message in the comic this fic is based off of. How do they expect the audience to take their message seriously when they can't even practice what they preach?
9450107
You're right. They didn't practice what they preach.
Be better than them.
9449652
Forgiving a group of people who threw you away at the first hint of you returning to your former bullying self, even when you've shown no interest in doing so and the hint is incredibly flimsy and is an obvious framejob? Not going to happen.
Unlike the demonic possession and deadly magical beams, where the assaulter had her mind corrupted and wasn't thinking clearly, the five so-called 'friends' were thinking clearly, had their rational minds, but decided on their own to disregard all logic and believe a bunch of lies - thus resulting in them betraying Sunset conclusively. In reality, forgiveness would be hard-earned and trust would take time to regain, if ever.
Sure, the source comic was flawed - which naturally flows into practically every fanfic based on it - but surely the main cartoon's better, right? Surely that actually preaches rational forgiveness and making up for one's mistakes, right?
Well, no. A Canterlot Wedding. Despite the third episode of this season, Lesson Zero, having Twilight's friends learn to take Twilight's worries seriously, that mysteriously vanished completely during the first episode of this two-parter - not a single one of them believed her or trusted her, when she told them the bride was not the mare she practically grew up with and was using brainwashing magic on her brother. To make it worse, not even her beloved mentor, the one being she would never ever want to disappoint, Princess Celestia believed her.
Twilight had her spirit utterly crushed, and the show thinks it could be healed with a simple apology from only Applejack? Bullcrap; the same thing Sunset's going through in this fanfic should've been what Twilight went through - utter distrust of her so-called 'friends' after they betrayed her conclusively, especially after the Smartypants Incident when they had said they had learned not to do this.
Then the MLP Movie, where Twilight ditches her friends, betrays the Seaponies and tries to steal their national treasure, but was caught red-hoofed in the attempt. A foreign member of royalty tried to steal a nation's national treasure. No amount of understanding or forgiveness would cover that one, and yet it's conveniently swept under the rug because a full-on war between Equestria and the Seaponies would not be conducive to that supposed 'message'.
While most of the show does preach understanding and forgiveness, it isn't at all perfect either - it sometimes "forgets that message" too.

To be honest - Twilight literally had no choice in the Movie. Tell me this - You presidend and vice president are captured, and your country burns. Will you take "small favor", whatever it is, or will you go all in? If my country was at stake I wouldn't want a small favor. It sound like a lift back to the surface, maybe. MAYBE small escort back to border. I HATED the movie with how they made Twilight the bad guy, when she wanted to steal an artifact in order to save her country. If you are not willing to go all out for your people - you are a traitor.

Not to mention that she was under a LOT of stress, and it's been previously established that the more stressed she is, the less likely she is to think rationally (seriously, Twi, did you REALLY think that the Queen would just leave such a precious artifact unprotected?)
Not helped is the fact that her friends acted like they didn't take the whole thing seriously. Yes they have technically fought off far worse threats and succeeded, but it doesn't make the Storm King and his army any less of a threat.
That, said, Twilight was still in the wrong. Just because she had good intentions does make what she did right. Her actions could have been taken as an act of war, and thrown Equestria into a conflict that they could not afford to get involved in. Not only that, but she dragged her friends into her scheme by flat-out lying to them and using them to distract the Sea-ponies, meaning they also got blamed for her actions.
We do not speak of the emo travesty.
10268008
Call me a traitor. I'm an American, and this hole can bucking burn and be rendered a Sunset Satan-esque crater, for all the "patriotism" that I have.
(Whatever amount of disgust you heard over "patriotism" wasn't enough. Put in more Essence of Vitriol and a dash of rattlesnake venom.)
10268280
Well the only reason I think that a possible war was avoided was storm king dead because of ponies and since he was their enemy Well getting rid of him made it equal. And her friends weren't helping despite twilight saying be careful they kept throwing caution to the wind and putting them all at risk.

“Not helped is the fact that her friends acted like they didn't take the whole thing seriously. Yes they have technically fought off far worse threats and succeeded, but it doesn't make the Storm King and his army any less of a threat.”
Thank God, somebody else gets it!
I figured this was the case but Anon-a-Miss has broken Sunset to the point that not even Twilight can fix things.
But in all seriousness, Sunset will likely need a therapist since it looks like this is a problem out of Twilight's league to solve. Sunset needs professional help to have any hope of overcoming her hurt and pain.
I wouldn't be surprised if Sunset doesn't believe Equestria has anything to offer her. She's more than likely doubting that Equestria can give her anything in her current mental state.
Sad to see that Sunset doesn't even trust Twilight right now. I hope this doesn't cause an end to their friendship.
