very nice filler really show morens struggle and regret
So Mourne's suffering begins. This pleases me. I doubt Ponyville will be very accepting to a zealot who attacked one of their own.
Oh the sick feeling of irony, I guess Mourne can see where he fell from now. On another note can we please find out more about BB's actions, or at least what he plans on doing? The thing that bothers me is what can he do? Hope to remove his own aunt from power, blackmail the situation or what? I think he's grossly overestimating himself but that does sound like him.
You have once again taken my expectations and dashed them on the rocks like a freighter in a storm.

4123306 Nice profile. I wonder what Derpy did to them?
4123461 Patience, young grasshopper. :) I haven't forgotten about Blueblood and Red Tape.

Oh, grand master, I seek to know how the self-entitled prick's plan shall self-destruct. Somewhere between Luna frying his sorry @$$ (literally) or Celestia disowning/revoking his title as nephew and prince.
Suck it, prick
meh. hopefully I didn't miss anything skipping the clop chapter.
...but this chapter.....ha.
One tries to pity Mourne- but can't. He got off pretty easy.
That, and he's a jerk. (and a bit obsessed?) tossing aside everything and all that...
Mourne got off incredibly too easy. If a regular pony had done the same thing, they'd be in jail for a long time with many charges against them.
I know I'm wrong, but I like to pretend that Mourne's sister faked her own death and is now Derpy/Ditzy/Gray+Bubble+MailMare+SideCharacter living a better life in Ponyville and that when Mourne shows up in Ponyville high jinks will ensue. Good chapter btw.

I'm pretty sure the bubble pipe says it all.
4124478 I know. I mean what acts did she perform to make Celestia look like that and to make Luna ashamed!
4123742 I've still got the Sherman idling just in case. Plus, I might need it with Blueblood. I need a loader, if you're interested. I've already got a gunner and a driver.
4123574
I worry that you're underestimating Blueblood in this. He actually can take the throne if he plays his cards right.
As Mourne proved, Luna is perfectly capable of slipping back into madness with the right provocation, and his plan to attack Big Mac is just the thing to push her over the edge. Luna's banishment the first time destroyed a good portion of the Royal Guard by turning the populace against the bat ponies and effectively crippled Celestia for a time because of her loss.
That's not to say that I think he'll actually succeed, but the fact remains that with the right push in the right place, he could prove Luna incompetent, make the population of Equestria distrust the Royal Guard, and take effective power from Celestia while she's grieving. The nobles are constantly looking for ways to increase their power as it is, so they would only stand in his way for the purposes of taking the position for themselves. And if the populace at large is turned against both Luna and the Guard, he could easily wind up with the political power to get some very, very questionable laws past Celestia simply because she wouldn't be able to say no without becoming the tyrant she always claims that she's not. If he plays his cards right he really could go from being a prince to a king.
4124496
Some things are best not known to mortal minds. Anything that could make the Princess of the Night ashamed is probably illegal in several countries.
4124533 That is true about Blueblood.
Also true about Luna. She's probably seen it ALL in dreams, so it must have been pretty messed up. (Probably had to do with 2 mares, 1 container.)
4124533
Out of everything that has been stated so far, I believe that BB's one major line of weakness is his ego. He does have the brains to pull of that type of plan but he thinks he's invincible. The nobility can believe that they have power but the princess is still a princess, she's the one with the lion's share of the power in her kingdom. She can revoke or dissolve any titles or powers. I would enjoy to see as to how Blueblood would make an attempt for power, it would show the rest of the nobility the extent of their actual power. Which would be smaller than they will ever admit.
4124590
I definitely agree that Blueblood's downfall will be through his arrogance and pride, but politically, the nobles really are as powerful as they think they are. Celestia isn't a monarch in her own mind. If the ponies of Equestria (the general populace, that is, not just the nobility) ever believed that she wasn't fit to rule, she wouldn't pull rank to keep herself on the throne. If Blueblood, or any other noble for that matter, gets enough public support, Celestia won't be able to do much by her own choice rather than any kind of actual inability to act.
Tricky wordplay and legal loopholes she can deal with endlessly (as long as she's thinking clearly), but without public support she's politically powerless simply because she won't force herself onto the throne if her ponies don't want her there.
I think Mourne will be a hero, but either he will save Mac, or die protecting him. I only hope things are better for him.
4124721
The general opinion of Celestia will be hard to corrupt but I do agree with you on the fact she wouldn't continue to rule if her subjects wanted her to step down. However, for that to happen it would need a large amount of support. The nobility could drum up unrest but as we've seen in the show so far, the local populace truly adore her and it would be very difficult to tarnish the princess' image. Right now it would be easier to hurt Luna which in turn would hurt Celestia but I don't doubt that since Mourne gave her a warning about BB that she's already taken measures against said actions. It will play out as Llyander writes but I expect BB getting to caught up in the moment that he'll misstep his boundaries in terms of political power. Or better yet, Big Mac wipes the castle floors with him and drag him along the train tracks.
4123788
If you think about it though, look at all the crap Discord did and he was forgiven. This world's justice system is obviously not like ours, it seems to focus much more on Rehabilitation and Reformation

Poor Shadowstep she didn't deserve this.
While I know that this is supposed to mean that he's finally learned his lesson, I can't help but despise him even more with this chapter.
He is a monumental Jackass of the highest order, a self-righteous twat with the mental capacity of a civet and not an ounce of common sense to call his own. He's a hypocritical little crank and his sob-story motivation only makes him an emotion-driven fool. His delusional grandeur of martyrdom and how he still doesn't take full responsibility for his own actions, even now in this chapter of recompense, serves to showcase how truly selfish and inconsiderate he really is. He is still a worm, and my opinion will not change until he has shown some true humility. Perhaps working on a farm can fix that - having grown up on one myself, I can attest to how an agonizing day of hard, manual labor can break even the hardest of egos.
Until next time, I hope the best.
I don't know how I would respond to making such a mistake...
I guess once I understood the full extent of it I would proceed to fulfill the duty of protection then just leave... fly to the top of a mountain and let the snow cover me. Such an error is beyond redemption in my opinion. Even with death in service to a noble cause or to save a life. It would show to me that I am broken beyond repair. That I was missing both wisdom and Self control. That I was a harm on all those around me. It's sad. I'm not sure going on is the right option.
i wish could help Mourne I've in a situation similar to his before where it feels like your standing on the pile of ashes from all the bridges you've burned. I know its hard but though harder than before those bridges can be rebuilt if you put in the effort and they're willing to forgive you but you can regain what you lost and come back better than before.
okay had to get that out of my system. I love when this happens to a character in a story cause i know that when they recover they come back stronger keep up the awesome work. I can't wait to see wait happens next.
Can't wait for more.
..I don't think Shadowstep should get badly punished..i understand a slight dock, maybe a bit of lower-level assignments for a time..But, for all she did? Even a relocation seems a bit much.
4125596
We've got room for more on the wagon XD
Or rather, the tank were driving to threaten said worm.....
4124909
As much as I thoroughly enjoy the mental image of Big Mac doing that to him, I doubt we'll get to see it. Unless Blueblood threatens Luna while Mac is around....then all bets are off. Nobody messes with the Apple family, and since that now includes Luna, our least favorite ego-maniacal prince might be in trouble.
But I think Celestia is going to try to look into Blueblood, and end up failing to catch him in time. He's pretty canny in this story, so I have a feeling he'll be able to stay ahead of Celestia long enough to cause more problems than we would like. We already know that he's digging through the Apple family finances to try to make both him and the princesses look bad by finding proof of preferential treatment. And now that he knows about what almost happened to Luna while she was in Ponyville......
And on an unrelated note, I totally want to see Big Mac teach Mourne the art of Zen. It would be fabulous.
4124533
While you make some good points about Blueblood's political machinations, don't confuse authority with power.
4127394
I wonder how they keep track of bits, the thought bothers me. Your entire currency is in coins so I wonder how hard it would be to keep the amount without fudging the numbers. I wonder if Equestria has checks or different valued bits. The banking situation makes me wonder how hard it is for a bank to just lump coins together, the vault probably looks like Scrooge McDucks.
4127397
True, Celestia could turn Blueblood into a gooey smear on the wall, but the point is that she won't. Her personal power is restrained by her morals, and her political power lasts only so long as the ponies she governs support her.
4126239 He made a huge error of judment... and you consider his reaction should be suicide? How would that FIX anything¡ Then he would have done the same thing the nobles did to his sister, and what his sister did.
Yes, he made a pretty big mess of things, but having to live with the concecuences of ones action is the biggest kind of punishment. Knowing you have, by your own hand, nearly destroyed your life and of those around you... one can build bridges, but the "what if" eats at you.
4131456
I have considered many responses to you. All of them fell short of describing the full extent on my reaction and thoughts. If you know someone who has killed themselves understand that I do not think suicide is the right option for the vast majority of people. Emotions should not drive such a decision.
In his place I would finish the assignment then cut all ties. Either I'd serve in some high risk place or live as a hermit. I would not seek redemption, because redemption cannot be gained. I would not seek happiness because I would no longer deserve it. I guess what I'm saying is I could not forgive myself. There are no right choices for him anymore. He has burned his bridges. His choice is made.
This is an emotional reaction honestly.
4135323 Well now that's amusing. That's my pic. :) I'm not the actual artist, but that's a pic I commissioned specifically after starting this story!
Hah. Didn't realise it had made it out to file sharing sites like that one. There is another porn pic of the two of them that I commissioned as well, but I'd been planning on sharing them further down the line.
Poor Shadowstep, will this be the last we see of her? I hope not, well another excellent chapter, can't wait for the next one.
You changed the title again? How will I make sexual innuendos involving Mac and his special relationship with Luna now?
One thing that popped into my mind here was in previous sections a great deal was made about Guards never leaving their partner, in an official capacity that is.
It's all very well to talk about Mourn guarding Mac, and advising him, but he is only one pony. If Luna is serious about him becoming her consort, he rates a heck of a lot more than one guard.
All this leading up to my desire to see Shadowstep blindsided by orders to second Mourn in his duties, and to keep an eye on him.
4124503 I'll be a loader! If there's no more room, I have an extra flamethrower
I didn't think some one still knew about that.
Though is miss leading. Some book we see to day as great pieces were once considered penny dreadfuls
You did a good job here sir.
He took a bomb to his life and now there's nothing left.
Well, Shadowstep SHOULD be kicked out. She knew something was fishy early on, and rather than coming clean about it she kept quiet.
Hell, she's the one that asked Mourne straight up why he didn't just kill Mac to cover his ass.
If that's the sort of moral fortitude of Luna's Night Guard, maybe she HAS failed them.
5396014 I think it has less to do with being moral, and more to do with calculated logic of the situation. Also she loved him so she hid it. She probably didn't expect him to be such an idiot. Also I'm pretty sure she said that in anger and would have stopped him from hurting Mac at all had she been there.
6466071
And why wasn't she there?
It's mentioned that Mourne and Shadowstep were supposed to operate as a team, and losing track of your partner is a fundamental error that "elites" like them aren't supposed to make. There's no particular reason to think that Mourne is so much better than her to give her the slip, and when he got back she clearly knew where he had been and what he had been doing. The idea that she and Mourne might be a thing makes it worse, not better; it's no credit to Equestria's military that their soldiers might be burying civilian corpses to cover for each other out of love. She was complicit after the fact if not from the start of their guard detail, and that should be more than adequate to have her removed from any duty of consequence.
Shadowstep tried to lay all the blame at Mourne's feet, and he WAS the cause of it, but she had the opportunity to redeem herself and she just kept her head down instead. During the lecture she gave him, she never once seemed concerned for the fact that Mourne had almost murdered an innocent pony beyond the fact that it got them in trouble. She lectured Mourne about his hypocrisy and for "hanging her out to dry", not the fact that his actions were completely immoral, illegal, and cruel. Big Mac's life clearly doesn't mean squat to her. All she cares about is her career and the partner that ruined it. Not exactly a model soldier.
