...quite good, really. Note that I'm British and so "quite" is akin to "fairly". It wasn't as good as the movie, it wasn't as good as (much of) FiM, but it was well above the "this is a total disaster" threshold. I've recently rewatched "What About Discord?" so I feel I have a fair idea of what a truly bad piece of Pony is like, and Make Your Mark was not that. I enjoyed a decent amount of it and I'm looking forward to the series proper in September.
I had middling expectations, which were exceeded by a fair degree. I too am looking forward to the new 3D episodes.
BTW, it seems that Tell Your Tail, Make Your Mark, and the IDW comic are all coordinated to a fairly close degree. That's unusual, and I don't yet have a feeling about whether or not it will be a good thing.

Somehow I had not watched S5 E22 before. I must have been working that weekend and never got back to it. It wasn't that bad. Fairly heavy handed on the 'you had to be there' trope and the lesson about accepting jealousy, but there were episodes I liked less. For instance, where Rainbow Dash lost all interest in cheering and in another episode where Twilight ditched friendship and cooperation in the name of competitive Trivial Pursuit.
I found the Make Your Mark special/pilot/episode 1 to be a bit lack luster. Like it was written by a committee interested in moving game pieces toward a goal of building cohesion between all ponies but not having a clear idea on the mechanism or motivations. Like, what in twisted inbred Equestria would drive Izzy, Zipp and Pipp to leave their comfortable homes and move in with Sunny? Earth ponies should have had magic from the get go as a motivation to give peace with unicorns and pegasi a chance. Pipp as a pop princess turned hairdresser is silly. Izzy doesn't have a life. Neither does Zipp, until this 'where did the
rummagic go' intrigue gives her a reason to shirk royal training.As for the animation, I am not keen on these 3D models. Sure they move and they don't always look bo-tox stunned, but is it art? I think I saw a nice environmental shot in there somewhere... Lip-synch tends to be off. They've taken holding sticks with hooves to a whole new level of
unbelievabilityuncanninessunworkabilityhoof-stick stickingness... magnetic improbability! Izzy's nasal voice might be pony tradition, but it is jarring. That lantern restoration produced something that looked nothing like the one Sunny's father had made. Continuity error with the toppled mailbox in front of Posey's house! (And why roses? Why weren't there poseys?)So, how soon before Sunny finds out that they're living in some sort of a simulation in a gigantic domed habitat? With pony-snatchers that come in the night to remove older ponies that know too much?

I wasn't really sure what to expect, but I was happy enough with what we got. I was pleased with Zipp getting more screen time, and the glimpse of an actual villain in particular. I haven't been following the G5 comics I'll admit, but I was warned not to watch the latest TYT until I'd seen the special, and a good thing too!

It's partly personal memories from a long time ago: I absolutely hate people deliberately taunting others with in-jokes and then refusing to explain them (as best they can), and my heart melted for Twilight as a result. Yes, there are some pretty poor episodes in S8/S9, but I don't think any of them upset me as much as "What About Discord?" does.
I've seen a few people complaining about the hoof thing. Honestly? It didn't bother me one little bit. I suppose I just put it down to "meh, latent magic" or something.

It didn't help that Twilight also learned that the 'in joke' taunting is an offensive weapon that she then immediately turned on Discord.
The hoof thing is anatomy. It's like drawing people with backward feet and hands twisted like sea lion flippers, just to get the heart-shaped pads right-side up.

Look, it didn't bother me. FWIW back when I was in the furry fandom I had a rabbit fursona, and it didn't bother me (generally, much) when people drew rabbits with paw-pads and button noses either, neither of which real rabbits have. What you said to Super Trampoline ("I guess your mileage may vary") also applies here. I'm not going to be told (or have it implied) that I should be annoyed by it when I'm simply not.
