[NEW FIC] Back to writing ponies! (...sorta)

tl;dr - I put ponies in another fic, but only for a few chapters

So, real quick, minor confession...this fic is actually one of my oldest, and it's not on this site.

Hey, easy, easy, let me explain.

[UPDATE] It's like being nibbled to death by cats

This chapter is a straight up continuation of the previous chapter, and there's literally zero time skip, unlike most of my chapters in this fic. So much so, in fact, that what had originally been two separate chapters (Gilda fights Sunset, sleepover happens) had to be combined into one because the "Gilda fights Sunset" chapter was going to be too long. It was during the

[UPDATE] Yes, you saw that right, new chapter

Not much to say about this one that the notes at the bottom of the chapter itself don't already say. Obviously, my health is much better and my sleep is improving to the point where I'm not having to take medication for it nearly as often. Work is going pretty good (I'll post about that at some point, it deserves its own post) and I've gotten HYPER into The Lost Tomb, which if you haven't read it

[UPDATE] When you get medical confirmation...

So I've said in my rather sporadic updates that I've been going through a lot, and I believe I've mentioned that the things that have been happening have been rather more draining on the ol' spoons than I otherwise expected.

    [UPDATE] Egad, some activity?!

Yes! I am still plugging away at [REDACTED], it's just somewhat slow going due to life reasons. I'm starting to accept that I'm just never going to be as outlandishly productive as WandererD or n7punk, and I'm working on being okay with that.

[UPDATE] Epilogue 3 in progress · 4:38pm Jan 22nd, 2022

So we're nearly done. I had been hoping to wrap everything up in time for a Thursday release and do the first-time-in-over-two-years Fanfiction Friday, but my day job had people calling out sick (at least a few diagnosed with COVID-19 in one variant or another) in increasing numbers all week with no appreciable decrease in the workload, so by the time Friday rolled around, I hadn't had any of the extra time I usually would have at work to do the non-writing tasks associated with being an author and nearly 50% of the team out sick, which meant that I only got about 3/4 of the epilogue done. I am MUCH happier with this one, and it's going to be quite a bit more light and fluffy than Epilogue 2, with at least two moments that (I hope) will make you laugh out loud.

This weekend is one where I have my daughter, and at the same time we're getting a new bed and dishwasher, so I'm not really likely to get much writing done before Sunday night. I can easily imagine the worst-case scenario being that I get the epilogue done by Monday evening, my prereader gives it a look by end of day Tuesday, which will mean I'll be able to post it no later than Wednesday. I'm going to go ahead and take the week to get ready for Fanfiction Friday on the Fourth of February (as alliteration is awesome and always appreciates as adventure anecdotes amass), and I'm definitely going to do the thing a bit differently. More details on the day of the first FF of 2022, but combined with the execution changes to the voting plus the 1.5 weeks+ between posting the finale of Empire and starting whatever the new project will be, that should give me enough time to bang out the rest of "On the Subject of Bug Horses and Friendship Lessons," a soft-canon entry in RuneSoldierDan's A Band of Misfit Losers Hunt the Undead that has a direct tie-in to Music Box Blues.

So if you haven't yet, go read the rest of that series:

Well so far it is really good but it sounds like in the story Celestia learned that her adopted daughter was her real daughter in a way and sunset was born a princess but abandoned and I'm wondering when did Luna spill the beans because last I knew outside the princesses she was the only one who knew about sunset.

Waiting with bells on... :raritywink:
Have not read RSD's stories yet. They are on my must read list, just need to bump them up.

More momlestia on the next project?

Sounds like a touch of confusion, which is fair given the presentation of the story and the (very) long writing period. Principal Celestia has no children due to the necessary organs being accidentally hamburger-ed in her youth. Princess Celestia gave up her biological child (Sunset) for adoption. Principal Celestia adopted Sunset but does not know she's Princess Celestia's biological daughter. Vice-principal Luna learned the full truth of Sunset's origins from the princess, but (as of the end of Empire) hasn't told anyone else, and neither has Princess Celestia.

Absolute must-read, as is the other stories I reference in Music Box Blues. I list them all with some small amounts of commentary in my author's notes on the chapter here. Enjoy! :twilightblush:

Heh, it seems as though the choice of what I'll be working on next will be a choice between The Swarm (fans of my changeling-focused fics Lost Little Wolf and Hive of Queens) and the Momlestia works.

And as for that, you'll have a choice:

  • Voice of Rage and Ruin - Direct sequel to My Empire of Dirt
  • The Last Little Unicorn - Action-adventure divergence AU. The mirror portal leads not to an alternate Canterlot City, but Seattle, WA, USA in the Urban Fairytales universe. Sunset flees Equestria after being banished, only to return to Equestria 30 moons later to beg Celestia for help in stopping the ultimate threat to the human world. Princess Celestia recognizes the ancient threat as one that tried to destroy Equestria prior to Luna's banishment and returns to the human world with Sunset to meet Sunset's new friends, her girlfriend Twilight, and Celestia's own counterpart General Celeste.
  • Gently Strains the Sunbeams - Slice-of-life romcom drama AU set a couple years after the events of Sunset's Backstage Pass. Principal Celestia has adopted Sunset prior to the younger woman's graduation from CHS, but life moves on and Celestia is exploring an adult relationship that she is considering revealing to Sunset, but since her partner is polyamorous she's concerned Sunset won't take it well, not to mention some significant emotional baggage for everyone involved. Meanwhile, Sunset is getting ready to move in with her girlfriend, and she knows the human world has tremendously different standards for relationships than Equestria, isn't sure how she's going to explain to her mom that not only is she a "spoke" on someone else's polyamory "wheel," her significant other also happens to be one of her former high school enemies. What neither of them know is that their girlfriend Adagio has no idea that she's dating a mother and daughter, not because Adagio's intentionally deceiving them, but because it honestly never occurred to any of the three to discuss their relationships with others on the level of revealing names. When events conspire to force the full situation to light, all three find themselves forced to confront feelings, make choices, and examine their lives.
  • Crossing the Streams - Bawdy comedy (NOT clop!). Sunset let Pinkie throw a birthday party one weekend during their final year of high school on an arbitrarily chosen date just to make the party planner happy. The enjoyable but otherwise uneventful party passes without incident, and Sunset goes "home" to her not-terrifically-legal-housing-but-by-now-at-least-comfortable home in the abandoned warehouse, only to return to school on Monday to amused whispers, blushing stares, and nicknames that imply promiscuity. Internet video of Sunset performing sex acts on camera to celebrate her 18th birthday start getting passed around the school, and Sunset finds a surprising ally in Principal Celestia as they investigate who made the video and try to find a way to get it to stop.

You could wind up helping to pick the next one, and if you've never participated in one of my Fanfiction Fridays before, keep an eye on my blog in the next two weeks for more detail on that.

I’d like to see the direct sequel of Empire as well as the last little unicorn though I would also like to see the story with Queen Celestia and Sunset

though I would also like to see the story with Queen Celestia and Sunset

Ah, yes. Project: Fever Dream (very much a working title for the whole thing). There's some (obvious) Momlestia to it, but that series will be more focused on the differences between it and FiM/EQG. Sunset being present in-universe from before Luna returns from banishment is a big one, of course, and the "native" Sunset is Queen Celestia's daughter, but died in infancy similar to how I wrote for Principal Celeste in the magic-less universe.

Hmmm...you're actually giving me some food for thought, here; one of the problems I've been having with the writing of this is I don't like doing straight-up "rewrites with one minor difference," and the only major change to Feverdream has been, "instead of ponies it's humans, elves, dwarves, etc. in a D&D home-brew world." For our planned adventure modules and the like, that works great (we've got a wall-sized rough draft map of "Equestria" already made up, to give you an example of the material we're developing). But for a narrative to a single story or series of stories set in that universe? Doesn't make for compelling writing. Focusing on the largest difference is compelling, and also gives the audience something more than just a "hey, wouldn't it be neat if..?" I can't help but think how interesting a 'Captain Carter' series based on the pilot episode of Mavel's "What if...?" would be, not just because Carter is so different from Rogers in the same situations, but because her relationship to Black Widow (and everyone else) would be so fundamentally different.

Well, one way or another, I'll be dedicating about 1/4 of my writing time to Project: Fever Dream going forward (I did promise my roommate, who's one of my significant others in my polycule, so you know I'm gonna have to keep that promise :raritywink:), so you're gonna see more of that no matter what. Again, more details on future writing in the upcoming Fanfiction Friday blog post.

Okay the Celestia who I was talking about was the principal who adopted sunset whose sister found out that the child she almost had expect life was unfair is sunset and I wonder why Luna told her especially after she was asked not to say anything.

5630605
Luna hasn't said anything to Celestia yet. There'll be some discussion of that in Voice of Rage and Ruin as it focuses on Luna and The Sirens in a similar way to how Empire focused on Celestia and Sunset.
