Writing Equestria's Changeling Princesses and the Kinsbane Part 1: Background · 8:22am Jan 26th, 2020
So both to promote book 3 of the Alternia-verse and also just to talk about and record the process of writing this story, here are a series of… “Behind the scenes” notes where I explain the process of which the latest entry into the Alternia-verse came to be. There will be no spoilers.
Part 1: The Background
For background, Equestria’s Changeling Princesses and the Kinsbane began in development… around 2016 while I was publishing book 2: Equestria’s Changeling Princess and the Abyssal Empress. I’d already thought about the ending for book 2 and the original plan was to write a book 3 documenting Alternia navigating from seasons 3 onwards, Equestria and the new world.
Needless to say… that fell through for many many reasons. The primary reason was I didn’t see the point of the story. It was so Slice-of-Life, so focused on reacting to canon it would read either as a fix-fic, which I didn’t want it to be, and I felt that while there was more to say about Alternia’s development as a character, I’d wrapped up her major story threads quite well.
So I simply focused on life, finishing my Masters of Arts in History and just… finding a job for the next few years. Until 2017 December. I was having a conversation with my longtime artist friend Firimil, whose done a lot of fanart of the series. She was getting married. I wanted to get a wedding gift for her, and a long time ago, while I was still thinking of the “Book 3 project” she’d drawn pictures of Alternia’s daughters, whose characters were very solidified in my head. There was just a huge issue.
I didn’t know what to DO with Alternia’s daughters.
And then I had a conversation with someone. I can’t remember who exactly, but basically, there was a long long idea I’ve had in my head where Alternia’s daughters would get to meet Chamelia. I thought it sounded like a cheesy idea and then that person said… why not make it cheesy?
I was like… ya know what, let’s do that.
And so began the writing for Equestria’s Changeling Princesses and the Kinsbane.
Cheesy can be a lot of fun. I mean, this show we're all writing for was cheesy as heck. I for one am looking forward to cheesy adventures with a younger Chamelia and her grandaughters.
I like it so far. Usually I hate time travel, but my only exception WAS doctor who. I'll make an exception here too.
Think that someone was probably me since I remember discussing somethings you wanted to try with Kyria and Mirage

I feel that you were involved with it but for some reason I think Wanderer D was involved with it too... that’s why I say I forgot :P

Probably both of us. I just remember that you were bouncing ideas around?

Yeah XD it all happened around the same time.

:D Glad you're looking forward to it!

:D Time travel was one of the things I was struggling with when I was starting this... no spoilers, but I figured out how it should work and how it should be used.
I live for cheese and sap, so after re-reading the first and the second, onward I go.
