[REVIEW] Equestria Girls: Spring Breakdown! (SPOILERS) · 4:32pm Mar 30th, 2019

In which the girls get some fresh new looks and a week-long cruise on a luxury yacht, Rainbow Dash makes a massive ass of herself, and R63 Applejack happens out of fricking nowhere.

Applejack is seasick.

Everyone is looking forward to a week of relaxation...except Rainbow Dash, who's looking forward to some epic shenanigans involving a sea monster or something. Rainbow is so determined to engage in heroic derring-do that she disrupts the other girls' enjoyment activities with her antics.

Hey, Lily Pad is on this cruise!

Rainbow VERY nearly took a faceful of Appleyack.

:facehoof: Flash? My dude? There was no need to burn Trixie like that. Really.

Trixie wants Rainbow to help her...SHOVE things, huh...? :trixieshiftright:

Rarity meets a guy with an atrocious accent. Who just so happens to look like a male Applejack. (Nice nod to the fandom, team!) Meanwhile, Twilight learns that her friends are all bummed out because Rainbow Dash has been ruining the cruise for everyone. Sunset tries to have a talk with Rainbow, telling her she needs to tone it down.

The girls are about as impressed with Ragamuffin's accent as I am. Especially Fluttershy, who gets in a good snark.

New Rainbooms song!

Rainbow talks the girls into ponying up and making "rainbow lasers" during the stage show. Their magic blows out the ship's electrical systems AND engines somehow, and with heavy clouds overhead, Rainbow is convinced "It's about to go down!" Her excited shout starts a mass panic, as their classmates think the ship is about to sink.

Twilight rushes off to try to get the ship back on track, while Rainbow has a fight with the other girls about whether or not Equestrian magic is at play. Meanwhile, Solid Pie squares off against her nemesis, Spatula Ocelot, and Rarity goes searching for Ragamuffin, only to find him dancing an Irish jig in the theater.

Seriously, dude, pick a culture and stick with it.

Rainbow, meanwhile, finds what she thinks is evil magic lurking below the waters, and drags Twilight off to help just as she's about to get the power back on, Pinkie just as she's about to have her cake, and Rarity just as she's about to have HER "cake". When Rainbow drags the girls up to the deck to show them what she found, there's nothing there, which only makes the girls angrier--especially Twilight, who has one hell of an argument with Rainbow.

Rainbow finds herself standing alone, leaving her friends feeling miserable. Meanwhile, the ship is still adrift without power, and a huge storm is brewing. Twilight decides she wants to make peace with Rainbow, and she and Sunset go looking for her but can't find her, and the winds are getting worse.

Sunset and Twilight set off to find Rainbow Dash in a lifeboat while Applejack works on the engine and the others do...stuff. They follow Rainbow to a spooky jungle island full of potentially dangerous animals. Poor Twilight takes a little bit of EVERYTHING to the face while exploring the jungle. When they finally find Rainbow, she's trapped in quicksand. Just as Rainbow finally admits there's no evil magic and she ruined the cruise for nothing, the girls are attacked by a random giant plant monster.

Yeah sure why not.

While trying to save Rainbow, Sunset realizes the quicksand is a portal--to Equestria! She shoves Rainbow Dash into it, then tells Twilight to jump in with her. The three girls fall into a dark place, where Sunset reveals they've turned into ponies.

FINALLY! RAINBOOMS! IN! EQUESTRIA!!

Sci-Twi has the EXACT SAME FREAKOUT Princess Twilight had the first time. :rainbowlaugh:

"ALL MY THINGS ARE HORSE THINGS!" Oh my GOD. :rainbowlaugh:

Rainbow and Twilight calm down and take an interest in their situation. Meanwhile, the other girls are having trouble back on the boat, because the storm is getting worse and is clearly not normal--and the lightning keeps flashing the Storm King's emblem.

Sunset and the others sneaking around Ponyville is hilarious.

So, over the following montage, we get classic memes, messy Sci-Twi, an out of control yacht, and basically everything going to hell in a handbasket for the Wondercolts while their displaced friends relax at Twilight's castle over fondue. Princess Twilight relaying the story of battling the Storm King gives Rainbow Dash the clue she needs to figure out what happened on the boat. Princess Twilight realizes the Storm King's unchecked magic has become a magical maelstrom that is threatening the lives of their friends in the human world and has a major freakout. Rainbow Dash, however, is excited because this is exactly what she's been waiting for.

Oh, and Sci-Twi has an ironic realization echo moment.

The girls go back to the quicksand portal with the staff that contains the Storm King's magic and suck up the storm, saving the yacht and everybody aboard. Except for the whole "the ship is still sinking" thing, anyway.

The Rainbooms use their magic to get everyone safely off the ship.

Ewww, Pinkie, don't eat that, it's soggy with sea water! :pinkiesick:

Ragamuffin reveals his accent was fake all along. Meanwhile, Sunset Shimmer leads all the stranded CHS students back home...by way of Equestria. :rainbowlaugh:

Oh god, that's gonna be a million fanfics right there.

So, this thing? 10/10. I'd knock a point off for tired old memes and Ragamuffin's accent, but I just really loved this one, so...yeah. 10/10. Can't wait to watch it again.

Not sure if I'd give it ten out of ten. It's an improvement over "Rollercoaster of Friendship" but that's not really saying much considering the former sucked. It'd be more surprising if they somehow managed to do worse.

Can't wait to watch it again.

That's what DVR's are for.

I'm still left wondering why Sci-Twi has wings when she pony-ups. The fact she's a regular unicorn when she goes to Equestria just further highlights the fact she shouldn't have wings.

I do wish they could've toned down Dash being terrible in the first half, but this was still fantastic.

Yeah I really enjoyed this, Forgotten Friendship is still the best but I would definitely put this above Rollercoaster (Even if I do enjoy it for the RariJack fuel). More Equestria stuff would have been nice but what we got was good and totally worth it for that hilarious ending. I'm gonna go ahead and guess that a lot of the stuff we saw in the promos are gonna be shorts similar to the beach time shorts. Also good luck to all the people trying to nail down a timeline as this apparently happens before spike gets wings.

Overall a nice appetizer before the main course that is Season 9 next weekend.

I can't wait to watch it -- for the first time. Yeah. Got interrupted and missed about 60% of it. Luckily, I recorded it and can watch it in its entirety later. From what I saw, this may be the best EqG since Legend of Everfree.

Meanwhile, Sunset Shimmer leads all the stranded CHS students back home...by way of Equestria. :rainbowlaugh:

Well, it took six years and seven movies/specials, but Sunset Shimmer finally managed to invade Equestria with her CHS army. :trollestia:

Rainbow talks the girls into ponying up and making "rainbow lasers" during the stage show. Their magic blows out the ship's electrical systems AND engines somehow

Honestly? I think that was the storm itself. Their usual power-up didn't really seem that strong...

Okay, I really want the rest of EQG season 2 to be just the EQG cast interacting with their MLP counterparts!

At least show Princess Twilight interacting with Flash! This is literally the first time in several movies these two got to see each other again!

I guess that when she's "ponying-up", she's tapping into the magic of her counterpart, Princess Twilight, and has wings only for this moment.
And I'm satisfied with this. Useless wings? No, but pointless.

5035187
That isn’t hard since Legend of Everfree was the worst. But this special sounds awesome! Too bad I ended up missing it when It aired but I’ll just watch it some other time.

I guess it’s a good thing timber wasn’t on the boat cause then they would have to navigate a timber wolf threw the castle

Dunno if I should "rant" over this special.
Of course it was better than Rollercoaster but far from Froorgotten Friendship, but I'm talking about details that aren't only about the scenario, and where this franchise is heading.
But you do this better than I (explaining facts and details with your won opinion, making jokes, etc.) ;)

All I have to say it this...rainbow dash you winged heffer

5035179
Alas, a DVR is the one thing I don't have. The equipment plus hidden service fees would drive my cable bill up too high.
5035181
Yeah, things like this are frustrating.

5035183
It was her turn to carry the Jerk Ball, after all.

I called that Ragamuffin's accent was fake (before the Irish jig, which is appropriate as Rarity's accent is also fake - you can hear it slip occasionally when she whines) and that they were going to "shortcut" through Equestria (as the makeshift lifeboat was moving away from the ship.)

Also, WOO, FINALLY the humans go to Equestria. I liked how Dash didn't fold her wings properly and just let them hang.

Everything I ever wanted from EQ :pinkiecrazy:

But it's interesting that the pony/human transformation automatically happens and has nothing to do with the mirror.

5035244
Aww that sucks. But the good news is that it will more than likely be spread out over five episodes on YouTube in the coming weeks

5035179 Pity we don't have one.

Or access to Discovery Family, for that matter.:raritydespair:

5035271
More to the point, it'll be on Netflix in a couple of months.

Am I crazy, or did Rainbow Dash summon the storm? She has this big thing in the first half where apparently them using magic attracts Equestrian magic, and then the Storm King's storm starts up the second she ponies up. So that storm was Rainbow's fault right?

5035290
Summon, no. Attract, yes.

5035181
5035200
I have a little headcanon on why Sci-Twi only has wings in the human world but not Equestria:

The wings that pop up in her human form are actually a leftover mutation due to the fact that the first time she "ponied up" it was as Midnight Sparkle due too unstable magic.

Since she was transformed into a pony through a normal process with stable magic it turned her into a standard unicorn instead of an alicorn.

5035359
That makes about as much sense as anything.

My major complain would be that the first part dragged too long, definitely the part were they go “four legs good” was the start of the high point of the special

Rainbow was really looking for trouble. And it must've been really awkward for everyone to go through Equestria at the end.
