Apologies for the upcoming dump but the episodes airing right now are a total mess!

I really am surprised they don't bond more. They both have a strong attention to detail, both enjoy being the center of attention, and both enjoy being pampered. It seems like they would be rubbing off on one another more.

Finally! A lesson at the school that isn't "do the opposite of what you see here!" You guys had me worried for a second there. :ajsmug:

It's honestly really hard to properly articulate my thoughts on this episode. For what it's worth, it's actually not that bad. Rarity and Rainbow Dash play off of each other really well, despite how much the episode likes to hammer in the point that they don't interact that much.

Part of the problem stems from the fact that this is basically Look Before You Sleep with RD instead of AJ. Which, in all honesty, is a perfectly decent premise for an episode. And I didn't find anything wrong with the execution per se. It's just that halfway through the episode, I was scratching my head and wondering, "should this be taking place in Season 8 and not, say, 2 or 3?" And y'know what the crazy part is? I don't have a good answer to that question.

Would it be better as a Season 2 or 3 episode? Most likely. Does it still work as a Season 8 episode? Eh... kinda. I mean, insofar as nothing about it specifically screamed "this should not be happening in Season 8" for me. I dunno, I just found this episode weird. Enjoyable, but weird. :applejackunsure:

Eh... I wasn't terribly fond of the way Rainbow and Rarity were handled here. They were kind of quick to end their friendship over their differences, which would've been dubious enough without the contrived circumstances to turn the friction between their personalities into an actual rift. :unsuresweetie:

I knew Twilight was gonna set them up right from the start!

4921178
I don't think they were actually planning to end their friendship, honestly. People say a lot of stuff they don't mean when they let their emotions get the better of them. And as a perfect example to this, Rainbow Dash emphasized her loyalty by refusing to leave Rarity in the swamp. They were just angry and lashing out at each other, nothing more.

4921200
Fair enough. It's just that something about the writing rubs me the wrong way. Feels a little ham-fisted at times.

I feel like this episode should have been in the earlier seasons.

On the lore side of things we get quite a few things. Like a new creature.

The name and effects of a magic artifact, not to mention the fact that Twilight keeps some artifacts for Celestia. Although I wonder if she usually keeps them at the school or if she only had them there for the set up and normally keeps them in her castle?

The fact that Rainbow Dash has attended a filly guide camp with Scootaloo.

The fact that Rarity tried to open a shop in Cloudsdale, and absolute confirmation that unicorn cloud-walking spells do ware off.

Plenty of fun little tidbits all around.

As for the story… I know as a Rainbow Dash/Scootaloo fan I tend to be more strict on my analysis on episodes with one or both of them, but…

Mostly I was disappointed because I thought the whole episode was a wasted opportunity to cover the idea of ‘proxy friends.’ That is to say, we’d never be friends if left to our own devises, but we are friends with the same person/people, so we hang out with them from time to time anyway.

Or even the true Rainbow Dash answer that she didn’t bother to give. Stuff happened, so loyalty demands I respect her even if I wouldn’t be her friend had those forced, shared adventures never happened, and she hasn’t betrayed me badly enough since to justify revoking that loyalty.

…And even accounting for my higher standards with such episodes, this one was riddled to way too many logic errors for me to even get close to calling ‘good’ or even ‘average’ for that matter.

So one minute the ace flyer is afraid of getting her wings scorched, despite the overtly clear location of the geysers, and the next she has no problem flying up to them and making cloud from the spray.

We have detective Rarity and her attention to detail and Rainbow Dash who alternates between being super perceptive and oblivious, yet nether of them notice that the path of sparkles went up…
Or that the crest on the door in the forest was the same as the one on a building they both work at…
Or the previously mentioned mention loyalty answer to the ‘why are you friends?’ question…
Or that past episodes have made it clear that Rainbow Dash has grown to like hanging out at the spa and that’s something both like now.

So yeah… a sub-par, repeat story line (friends get mad, friends make up) that fails a ton of logic checks. Forgive me if that doesn’t strike me as a skillful example of good storytelling worthy of praise.

Anyway, until next time have fun out there.

edit seeing as it hasn't technically aired in the US i guess I'll add the spoiler sections for now.
Edit 2: it's aired everywhere now so removed spoilers.

I'm more expected and Odd Couple episode to be with Pinkie and Rarity.

DAMN people are critical. This was a good episode, folks!

I liked this episode.

With how different the mane characters are, you'd think this lesson would come up more often. Then again, the very first two-parter demonstrated that characters could combine different skills for common goals.

It was okay.

4921373
Seconded.

Then again, maybe I just like it on principle. Who knows, really?

I'll put all this under spoiler just to be sure.
The students were unsufferable in this episode. Geez, you really think that you must like the same things to get along? Speaks the carnivorous griffin friend with ponies and the most different creatures...I understand they attend a 'school of friendship' after all but everytime the whole idea bugs me a little. Can't you guys think with your own head? The students all know what their teachers have done for the world and even if they happen to see them disagree shouldn't be so quick in questioning their friendship to one another.
Another point: Twilight puts all those precious artifacts inside a chest like a bunch of toys? Bah.

Still, I liked the episode, it wasn't anywhere near boring even if as someone said before, certain details didn't make so much sense, like the door with the school's symbol that both Rainbow Dash and Rarity fail to notice and also Rarity's boots. Why? She's a fashion designer and buys something that loses glitter like cheap clothing?

I had to say it, sorry.

From the minute Twilight concocted that fake mystery with the 'missing' item, I lost interest in the episode. I hate knowing exactly what's going to happen next in an episode, as once again we get a manipulative solution to a problem where a more straightforward resolution would've been more interesting. Still, apart from that it was alright.

There have been a few episodes this season that feel like they've been brought forward from S1 or 2 and attempted to modify to the level of S8. Some have kinda sorta worked, like Non-Compete Clause (Yes, I really think so), others really haven't, like Horse Play (I'm so getting lynched for this). This was easily the best of them. It also almost feels like a shutdown of that critic in Fame and Misfortune who claimed it wasn't believable the mane 6 would be friends. Yes it showcased how distant RD and Rarity's connection could be, but it also showed how well they click without even realising it. Smart call on using one of the rarer pairups too.

Yes, it felt more like a season 2-4 episode. More importantly, it felt like a good S2-4 ep that remained good up to today. Fourth of eighteen for the season so far.

Now I just have to hope we see the even more elusive Twilight/Applejack pairing before the show ends.

4921876
That would be interesting, Twilight and Applejack are a lot different from many points of view...well, just like Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie, the quiet one and the loud one. Long story short, they are a heterogeneous group of friends that in the end blend well together. Isn't that the moral in MLP: Fim after all?

I'm not really a fan of episodes written by G.M. Berrow, but I think this was one of her better episodes that she has wrote for the series.

Relationships develop more from experiencing things together compared to interests is what I got from this

You have people with friends and partners with vast differences yet can get along regardless.

This was an okay episode. Good, but not great. It was pretty clever of the writer to point out how few major interactions Rainbow Dash and Rarity have had over the years.

And it was ironic how Twilight trying to use them as an "example" of friendship almost caused them to break up their friendship entirely (even with Starlight trying to reconcile them). But at least they managed to rekindle their friendship in the end. With a little help...

ALL HAIL HYPNO-TOAD!

4921951
A Twilight/Applejack episode would play out exactly like a Rarity/Applejack episode, only with Twilight's managing to be even more snobbish and dismissive because the staff don't know how to write her and don't care to learn.

Probably for the best we don't get one.

What if Rarity and Rainbow Dash's friendships did break up completely beyond repair?

4921875

I hate knowing exactly what's going to happen next in an episode, as once again we get a manipulative solution to a problem where a more straightforward resolution would've been more interesting.

You mean like seeing a therapist?

4922121
They did see a therapist. It didn't work.

4922136
Yeah, that's what I figured. It's not so much "Oh, they just need to like each other even if they have nothing in common" so much as it is "Oh, they just need to appreciate each other for their common interests". It's why I liked this episode, going on a fake adventure and such.

4922058
I personally don't see Twilight that snobbish anymore. She hasn't even fully accepted her title yet -yes, she calls herself 'princess of friendship and is proud of that, still wouldn't let other ponivillians call her 'princess'. She doesn't seem snobbish to me.
Applejack instead, seems snobbish; like in that episode when she and her family spend heart's warming eve at Pinkie Pie's and she doesn't accept her friend's traditions. I know it's an old episode, it's just an example.
Or when she judges Rarity's trainees.
Back to S1 when she thinks she can go to the Gala with her working suit. Girl. Please.
And the rivalry thing with Dash is still going on.

I liked this episode. Kind of surprised it's taken 8 seasons before they made an episode about how it is that RD and Rarity are friends despite having almost no hobbies in common. I liked how they worked together to help find the artifact thingy, and I figured Twilight and Starlight were behind its disappearance to get RD and Rarity to be friends again. Also interesting seeing that giant frog-like creature. Another good episode for me.

4922296
Not only was she accepted the title (despite hardly deserving it), she lets her friends (like Sunset) call her by it, and has started collecting more. Like "Headmare," with which she has had no trouble at all. Again despite being an utter failure at it.

And it is impossible for Applejack to be snobbish. Dismissive, yes, but snobbery is a dismissiveness that comes from being upper-class, which Applejack is not.

4922359
They are opinions I guess :)

4922387
Is that an admission that you can't make an argument refuting them?

4922390
Chill out, I'm just trying to be polite and didn't want to go off topic any further. This discussion is about the episode and I spoke my mind enough.

I've already said that Twilight's way of teaching is a little off and regarding to be snobbish and dismissive it's only a little squabble between synonyms on my part. Sometimes Applejack mistakes being honest with being dismissive, it's ok if I say that? At least, she widely proved it in the past.

4921876
What? There are definitely episodes of applejack and twilight.*Checks all of the episodes on the wiki* Wow your right, one episode out of eight seasons.

I am a fan of G M Berrow. 'The One Where Pinkie Knows' is one of my favourite episodes. Her books are good at telling a story from the characters perspective.

This episode was pretty good I mean RD and Rarity rarely have must interaction the story is predicable . I mean I saw it was a set up from a mile away.

This episode was rather enjoyable.

Good episode about an underrated duo.

"We've been friends for years and we just realized we have nothing in common."

4929704
Don't overthink it. That's how this episode got kicked off in the first place. :ajsmug:

OK, Imma point out the elephant in the room:
Rarity Investigates Exists!
Thank you.

4923033
Rockhoof and a hard place had them with some together screentime
Which is good 'cuz I need for a PMV ;)

4962446
I'm not counting that, that happens a lot in season endings and beginnings. I'm talking about a full episode of twilight or Applejack working though a problem. The closest to it was the time Luna and Celestia got kidnapped by everfree forest.
