So, my PC has died. · 2:35pm Jun 1st, 2018

Yeah. My hard drive has given up the ghost, and has all but stopped working. I managed to save all my fics and plans for them, but now writing is going to be impossible until I get a replacement hard drive.

I'll keep you all posted.

you live by the cloud you die by the cloud, place all stuff you need on a cloud service to avoid problems like this

Yeah I hate when my hard drive fails as well. One thing I can suggest is maybe get a solid state drive. My computer has a solid state and it boots up incredibly fast. It’s also reliable for me. I also have a hard drive for my games. So maybe get a solid state drive for the C drive and a hard drive for larger files.

The only good thing about the cloud is that it's driven hard drive prices down. Setting up your own NAS is fine, but entrusting your data to a company of crooks and scammers is dumb. Cloud services are all beyond worthless.

Computer tape reels aren't dead yet. Just stick your archives in a firebox or safe deposit box.

It's often more about your needs and what best fits your usage. Cloud is all well and good for cost and scalabilty but not so great if your internet access is unreliable. Redundancy is usually good. A good technologist friend of mine says if it doesn't matter exist in 3 places, then it doesn't exist. Theres some truth to that.

That being said, if you need tech support for your issues, always happy ta' lend a hoof.:ajsmug:

Except when your solid state drive borks.
Mine did 5 years ago. Recovery from a solid state is nothing like a platter and head drive, which I used to physically repair and recover as part of my work in the early - mid 2000's.

But the insanely fast transfer rate does make backups very quick, and therefore no excuses when the drive does fail.

i have over 40TB of hard drives in my house and some work on snapraid for redundancy, but! documents, pictures etc... they sit on my GOOGLE DRIVE folder and synced to the cloud for the simple reason that i can access them when i travel and in case shit happens i have an online copy.

Tape backups are ok.
Unless you are a certain Australian bank....

The Commonwealth Bank has admitted a supplier lost two magnetic tapes in 2016 containing backup data on almost 20 million customers.

The bank said in a statement that the tapes “contained customer names, addresses, account numbers and transaction details from 2000 to early 2016”.

The bank ultimately decided not to inform its customers about the massive data loss..

Well there is a saying: nothing last forever

What will happen with my computer soon..... Except that it's probably the RAM or the processor, or both, that will kick the bucket. :ajsleepy:
I hope you can get back on track soon, "Soaring on Little Wings" sounds like a very promising fic and the views already confirm that.

My cellphone died today, I feel your pain. Somewhat.

I wish you luck tom
