Fic recs, April 22nd: Jordan179 edition

Once again, though a good bit late, I bring it upon myself to memorialize an author via reviews of their stories. Though this time, it's different, as I had no connection to Jordan179 and only learned of his passing (three years ago this month, coincidentally), from this post

Another post about video games and Youtube and stuff

If I'm going to waste time watching shit on Youtube, the least I can do is tell people about it. :P

Ceave is a crazy Austrian with a love of video games and a head for philosophizing about them. Plus he really, really hates coins, no matter how tasty they may look.

Do you like video games? How about philosophy?

I like one of those things for sure, but no one combines the two better than a Youtuber named InfernalRamblings, a former professional game developer who now creates hour and a half long video essays about the meanings of video games and how they relate to the world today. Here's a few highlights, since this is now basically my only

Intense Lesbian Subtext? [episode spoilers!] · 4:44pm Oct 11th, 2017

So begins the first of three impending blogs about the leaked episodes. @_@ I promise to post no more than one of them a day.

"Season 7" should become fandom shorthand for "unparalleled clusterfuck of uncoordinated release schedules". You know that Mage Meadowbrook comic I reviewed not long ago? It came out a week before the episode. I think the same goes for the comic that ties in with this episode. And since I read and reviewed it already, I've spoiled the entire conflict for all of you, if you read that review. :B It's season 7: you're welcome.

Where to even begin? This is one of those episodes where what's happening around the plot is more interesting than the plot itself. I mean, how much do you care that Pinkie cares about whether ponies like her pie? That's how much you'll care about the plot. Rainbow Dash learns a lesson about not sparing others' feelings so she can continue being a shithead, the end.

I don't know how to feel about her in this one. On the one hand, usually she wouldn't need an excuse to be a dick to her friends, so the fact that she was trying to spare Pinkie's feelings gives her points. (I mean, if she hadn't, then Pinkie would have been like "But have you tried my pies?" and we would have gotten the comic.) Those points are immediately taken away when its found she's being a really bad pet owner (Fluttershy, what have you done?), although I can kind of mitigate that with the fact that Tank seems to enjoy the pie, and animals will eat anything regardless of whether it's good for them. I mean, doesn't absolve her completely, but that's tortoise abuse. :|

Really, I find Dash to be considerably more, well, considerate in this episode than she tends to be, which means I was really able to enjoy the heaping helping of PinkieDash. Like, I hope this results in an insurgence thereof. :D That ship's been painfully missing from the fandom since S1.

But the rest of it? All the jokes and stuff were amazing. For an episode that calls back to a line from Party of One with its title, all its other callbacks were hilarious! Applejack wondering how to get out of the party cave? Classic. (Gotta love her sass mastery at the end, too.) Shoeshine getting the pie and being all "It's not even my birthday!" The chocolate thing. There's even a fart joke, I mean, oh my god!

And then there's Evil Dash. What a treat! Rainbow rarely gets ridiculous turns like this (and the less said about the last time she got one, the better), and this was just so hilarious. The design, the overblown dialogue, the eye lasers. XD I had to pause the episode because I was laughing so hard, and then I designed a Sentinels card for her. :B

But yeah. Like Hoofball Season, this is a highly substanceless episode that feels like something we would have gotten 5 years ago, but it's also extremely entertaining. I'll take a lot of laughs over large canon reveals when the medium they're baked into has no particular problem otherwise.

It's better than the comic, is what I'm saying. :B

Sounds about right. I’ll take the “Season 2 Refugee” episodes as long as they can still be funny.

:rainbowhuh: Pinkie, I'm sorry, I don't even like eating pie.

:pinkiegasp: Who's been eating my pie then?

:rainbowdetermined2: Everyone. Everyone in town, all of the wonderbolts, the foals at school, and my pet turtle.

:pinkiehappy: you got everyone in town to eat my pie?

:rainbowwild: yeah, they all love it.

:pinkiehappy: Eeeee! I know, how about I just eat your pie from now on?

:rainbowhuh: Well, I mean, that works I guess...

After so long in the fandom, I'm afraid my first thought was "you mean there's a lesbian SUBtext as well?"

I scrolled down without reading cause i don't wanna be spoiled, but I do like reading your thoughts on the episodes as I watch them. Would you mind doing reminder blogs with links back to here or something when the episodes actually air?

I mean, how much do you care that Pinkie cares about whether ponies like her pie? That's how much you'll care about the plot.

I think lots of people care about plots related to Pinkie's pie, and who likes eating it, how it tastes, ....

A bit like the part of last week's moral related by Cadence, this was something where maybe it's applicable to Rainbow Dash in this particular situation, but not really generalizable. White lies, graciously accepting things you don't really want, stuff like that's normally perfectly fine and an important way to avoid pointless friction. The only reason it comes out different here is because of how it interacts with Pinkie being Pinkie and flooding her with this stuff constantly. Which isn't something that applies to many people, really.

Also if anything seeing this made me thing the comic was worse than it already was, because it has Pinkie doing the same thing all over again and looking like a huge dick as a result. On the subject of things coming back from Season 2: Pinkie being entirely unable or unwilling to take no for an answer.

:rainbowdetermined2: ... but remember, nobody loves eating pie as much as you do, so sometimes you may need to eat your own.

Well, based on the rope stuff that shows up from time to time, there may very well be lesbian subs in the text...

I was really able to enjoy the heaping helping of PinkieDash. Like, I hope this results in an insurgence thereof. :D

Yes plz. YOURE MAKING ME WANT TO WATCH MORE EPISODES PP.

/me makes note of episode now.

Always, Humor > Canon

Really, there's not a choice. Funny trumps every card in the deck. :)

Text: fast horse doesnt like eating her partner's pie
Subtext: Fast horse doesnt want to go down her partner

What's the name of the episode?

Yeah, if you think S7E23 has an intense lesbian subtext, wait until you see the intense harem subtext of S7E24.

Ditto. I've never been too shy on watching leaks, but marathoning these (if I can even find them anything) would just feel like reckless indulgence. Two hours of glee to extend the next hiatus by two months.

The actual lesbian text is in the books now, it would seem. :B

They do make bookmarks for that! :V I suppose it wouldn't be too hard to slap links on Pipe Land blogs, though!

Honey, that ain't subtext, that's a battle for who gets to be on top. :V

4695065 (hint: Not Sunburst).

4694783
So yeah. Was going to say that... well... one of the problems for me with this one is that to the extent there's that lesbian subtext (sooo goddamn much, which is the best part of the episode on its own)... that subtext translates almost one-to-one into rapey/sexual harassment subtext. ._.

I think Pinkie is now probably a serial harasser (general, if not sexual). (See Donkey, Cranky Doodle.) And if we're honest, would anyone be surprised if she is a cereal harasser as well? :P

Just saw it. The interesting thing is that it wouldn't really work in the earlier seasons because it needs years of buildup, and as we saw in "Griffon the Brush-Off," prior to Nightmare Moon's return, Pinkie and Dash weren't really close enough for the latter to be inducted in the Pie of the Whenever Club.

In any case, some fantastic shenanigans and accidental innuendo thick enough to need a pie server, though I am a bit disappointed that they didn't do more with Soarin' in such a pie-centric episode. Dash has a handy pastry disposal unit on par with Tank at Wonderbolts HQ, and she just throws one in the trash? Shameful.

Oh, and it's nice to get confirmation that ponies are biologically specialized to handle ludicrous amounts of sugar.

Yeah, Soarin was really wasted in this one. D: I was all but shouting at the screen "SAY SOMETHING, YOU ARE THE PIE EXPERT" :B
