    Update (Without excuses this time!)

Guess what? I'm done writing the next chapter of Manifesto.

I just need to give my prereaders a day or two to look over it, and then it'll go up.

Until then, here's Despacito being played on a guzheng.

    Hey, everyone.

I've somehow gotten out of the habit of posting updates. Oops.

Anyway, you've no doubt noticed that I don't post as often as I once did in the past. This is largely because improvements in my life situation mean I have the wherewithal to engage in hobbies other than writing fanfiction.

    Update.

Goodness, it's been a while, hasn't it? You're probably wondering why my pace has slowed down on Manifesto. Well, there are several reasons, but the most relevant one is that I find myself rewriting large swaths of this chapter as I zero in on the best plan for Sunset to take. I'm basically going back and forth between two ideas that can't really be combined into a single one, and for

    New Story Incoming

In case you missed my last blog post, I'm taking a break from the adventures of Celestia and Daring Do to write the next Petriculture story. At this point it looks like it'll be fairly short -- about two chapters long -- and I recently finished up the first chapter, which will be posted once my prereaders give it a final once-over.

I'm currently cleaning up the first two chapters for EQD. Unfortunately, I ended up with a prereader who is apparently unaware that written English has two different sets of rules regarding the use of quotation marks, and is insisting that I use the British style, which looks completely unnatural to me, since I've been using the American style my entire life.

To wit, here's an example of the feedback I got:

"...all ground-level clouds fall under the category of ‘fog,’ regardless of their origin." / Misplaced comma.

It took me several minutes of searching on Google to figure out what the problem was, since most of the results I got said that commas and periods always go inside quotation marks, regardless of logic. (This, incidentally, is how I learned that there was more than one set of rules.)

Oh, well. At least they didn't ask me to overhaul everything I've written so far.

I've said it before, I'll say it again: They take this stuff way too seriously. I got in trouble for spelling "Analogue" instead of "Analog". Fun times.

This is why I like the Canadian way of doing it, we either write it the UK way or the american way. That way we can blame the other group whenever we choose the wrong way.

Seriously, sometimes I don't know if I'm writing UK or US english. Same goes for spelling

Pretty stupid if you ask me.
It's like asking someone to replace all instances of colour with color or vice versa

Just don't even bother with those EQD pricks; too much time and energy wasted for the same thing FimFiction will give you.

Just ignore it. I think most of us have stopped paying attention to EQD for fiction at this point, so if they feel like being stupid you can just ignore them and move on.

I just got a rejection saying "rejected due to systematic grammatical errors" or something. I didn't get any strikes though. However seeing as I have no clue what that means, I wont be submitting it again any time soon.//dl.dropbox.com/u/31471793/FiMFiction/emoticons/shrug_Derpy_Hooves.png

Just use commas on the inside and the outside. Keep all your bases covered.

As long as the style you are using is based on an actual rule, all you need to do is reply with the evidence and they will have to drop the issue.

Although, I would personally put that comma outside the quotes.

Ahh, the joys of arbitrary grammar rules

I try to keep my criticism of the EQD prereaders to a minimum, because, quite frankly, they've voluntarily taken on an ugly and thankless job that seems to earn them nothing but hate a lot of the time.

But that... that's a bit overly picky.

Just to clarify, I don't have a huge problem with EQD's nitpicky tendencies. It's basically a relatively mild frustration. If I didn't think it was worth the effort, I wouldn't have submitted this story to them in the first place.

396379 - Eh, it's not that bad. It'll just be easier to avoid the issue in the next chapter (they'd like me to write another one before resubmitting), which shouldn't be a problem, since I don't plan to spend a lot of time dealing with legalese, which means I can use more indirect quoting.

...

Hell, I got called up on my misuse of semicolons in the first chapter. Hit control eff and you'll find that the only one that exists is in the comments.

396410 Wait, The Saboteur? You mean I wasn't the only one to play that game? We can form a club of people who played it, it'll be me, you, the artist, and the reviewer at 20th Century Conflict.

It's not just the editors from Rightpondia. Many technical writers and coders prefer that method, and the standard American way just seems Wrong.

The problem is that aside from being super nit-picky over grammar and editing, they really don't have anything of substance to stand on and point at when they deny something. What really gets me though, is that I've seen writers with MUCH worse grammar and editing that HAVE made it, and guess what, they were still perfectly fine stories!

That's why I've just resigned myself to seeing how many denials I can rack up. My goal is to hit 50. :rainbowdetermined2:

>commas and periods always go inside quotation marks
Er, no. If the comma or period is not part of the quote, do not put it between the quotation marks.

396719 You know what's funny? According to the stats, I've played it for 136 hours. That's a lot of days, and yet there are still two achievements I need to unlock. Sometimes I think I should get some new games.

396735 - Yes, that is the British style, also known as "logical" quotations. The American style (most notably used in The Chicago Manual of Style) does not do this, unless you're writing non-fiction.

It should be noted that there are British publications that prefer the American style and American publications that prefer the British style, however.

I will never/very unlikely to attempt to write fiction for that reason alone. It is also the secondary reason I had a friend write a speech-to-text program for me. Because my written English is nearly worthless and my spoken I would judge to be fair. Otherwise put: English is the language that I best read while my native language is the best I understand the rules. Even then that understanding is tenuous at best. :twilightblush:

I only go one EGD to look up the really famous 'fics and for the "good" pony art. In either scenario that will happen once a month at best.

Eh, even speaking-to-text, none of the above came out well...

I prefer British style for commas/quotation marks myself. It seems to make more sense to me.

As for EQD, don't be surprised if they keep gigging you on things, even when you've fixed 'em.

since they want you to use English rules, use old English rules, or should i say 'ye olde English rules'

Eh, I've never been one to have much sympathy for someone doing a job badly, regardless of it being voluntary. You elected to do it, do it right, and if you do it wrong, fix it.

I prefer the "British" style for scare quotes, myself. I think it makes more sense that way, but I'm a computer programmer and I like to terminate my delimiters in the correct order.

But yeah, griping about that is pretty dumb.

In what strange bizzaro universe does punctuation go outside of quotation marks?
