Fic recs, April 22nd: Jordan179 edition

Once again, though a good bit late, I bring it upon myself to memorialize an author via reviews of their stories. Though this time, it's different, as I had no connection to Jordan179 and only learned of his passing (three years ago this month, coincidentally), from this post

Another post about video games and Youtube and stuff

If I'm going to waste time watching shit on Youtube, the least I can do is tell people about it. :P

Ceave is a crazy Austrian with a love of video games and a head for philosophizing about them. Plus he really, really hates coins, no matter how tasty they may look.

Do you like video games? How about philosophy?

I like one of those things for sure, but no one combines the two better than a Youtuber named InfernalRamblings, a former professional game developer who now creates hour and a half long video essays about the meanings of video games and how they relate to the world today. Here's a few highlights, since this is now basically my only

HOLY SHIT THEY MADE A GOOD WONDERBOLTS EPISODE

My only complaint about this episode is really more a complaint about PPOV: they weren't doing Just for Sidekicks-style foreshadowing with the flight camp reunion! But then, it probably would have just been a ripoff of the Flutterdash friendship comic anyway, so I think we're better off without it.

Instead, I had a minor OH NO IT'S NEWBIE DASH TWO heart attack during the locker room scene, and then Spitfire decided to be adorable, which she hasn't done since... Ever, actually. <.< And from there on, everything was amazing.

It's best ship, they were able to dump a bunch of OCs on us and have me care about them, the central friendship conflict was something new, best ship was in it, I love Angel Wings because she's dumb as bricks, Vapor Trail looks adorable as fuck in the Wonderbolts' trainee uniform, Sky Stinger was a good character despite falling somewhere between Quibble Pants and Zephyr Breeze on the jerk-o-meter for most of the episode, Twilight was in top form, and it stars best ship.

(God, I hope someone gets the reference in the title.)

But seriously, I've hated Wonderbolts episodes since Wonderbolt Academy, with the minor exception of Rainbow Falls, and even that helped contribute to an overall loathing of the characters, at least one of whom I used to really, really love. And now it's like none of that ever happened. :D This is a rare feeling, and my only question is "is it better than Viva Las Pegasus?" Because it's certainly on the same level.

OK, English is not my mother language therefore the reference has been lost on me. What ship does the episode start/reinforce?

HOLY SHIT THEY MADE A GOOD WONDERBOLTS EPISODE

Basically sums things up, doesn't it?

This was good. I saw Sky Stinger, went "Whelp, here comes our jackass antagonist," and got one surprise after another. The gags connected, I loved Angel Wings' voice, and the friendship problem was a fresh and interesting one. The new characters brought fresh quirks and a more believable, natural friendship than what we usually see on the show. We finally got to see a fun side of Spitfire, and Rainbow and Twilight's classroom shenanigans were entertaining.

Delicious, delicious, good slice-of-life. How I missed you.

... Pretty much all the Wonderbolts eps have been great.. aside from Rainbow Falls.

Seriously what is with all the hate from so many people for them? Nothing has failed to make sense, and it all works amazingly well together.. aside from Rainbow Falls, but that episdoe screwed over every character in it to some extent.

And yeah this one was also awesome and did a lot really really right.

I loved it, too. But there is one burning, unresolved question left in my mind by the very last shot: Are Fleetfoot and Twilight simply laughing at Dash's pain... or did they just prank her? :rainbowhuh:

Yeah, I don't think I've ever found Spitfire as funny as I did here. And the new characters could not be more of an obvious couple if they try. I can only assume their child will have an important role to play in the balance of harmony. Why else would the Map care?

Of course, one could ask that question about several map episodes... which only offers further possibilities for interesting answers. :pinkiehappy:

Presumably Twidash.

Spitfire decided to be adorable

Most of my laughs came from Spitfire herself. That's never happened!

The Wonderbolts may be off the hook, but Fleetfoot is not. >:V She is still alpha asshole!

That doesn't answer your question, but you can probably come up with something.

4250483

Yeah, I don't think I've ever found Spitfire as funny as I did here.

Most of my laughs came from Spitfire herself. That's never happened!

I KNOW, RIGHT

Yep, this is my favourite 'Bolts episode ever, too. (And I liked "Newbie Dash".) Given the weird scheduling, it's also effectively the finale, and I can live with that. I'm not sure this quite dethrones "Testing Testing 1, 2, 3" as best Twilight/Rainbow episode, but it's close. Lewis & Songco have a pretty good record now -- "The Hooffields & McColts" is the only one of thier episodes that I haven't liked -- so I hope they'll be back next season.

4250473

The vast majority of the Wonderbolts episodes paint all of them except Soarin' as arrogant idiots who then turn out to be absolutely useless every time they're clued on to do something that isn't racing.

4250534 No... not seeing that.. aside from Rainbow Falls, which, again, screwed over every character it touched in some way or another. Every other ep has been really great. Most of the complaints I keep hearing simply do not work or are totally missing what was going on, cause... they really have not been portrayed as that in the slightest.

Is this then the last episode of the season? There aren't any more hiding in the wings somewhere? Because I can't keep track. c.c

4250547
Their performance in Secret of My Excess is what usually gets referenced in these sorts of arguments.

4250640 Eh true... that one was one of their less stellar outings. Just shows they are really bad at fighting dragons. But at least they tried?

Yeah..... they aren't exactly the greatest when it comes to combat, but as characters, don't get all the derision.

4250640 If there are, they're hiding from me too. No more till spring now.

4250519 Does Fleetsy still have that vicious speech impediment? Because that would be supes fucking annoying

4250728
It's the only thing about her I ever found endearing. :B And I dunno, I wasn't paying that much attention, so it might have lapsed/been cured.

4250749 I don't like speech impediments. Or really any kind of impairment. They distress me in real life and feel like a cheap way to have a character be loved in media.

Watching the episode, oh this is awesome like PP said earlier, it's like a 10/10, this is a pretty good season with the episodes we're getting- TOP GUN quote!!!

Seriously, the one thing Wonderbolt Academy was missing, and this episode redeemed it! 11/10!

Dang, that really was pretty great.

What a great effective end to the season.

I still don't get why "A Heart's Warming Tail" is ranked so high

Huh.

Is it weird that I specifically referenced liking her voice a lot more than the norm, and then learn she's not at all a professional?

I don't get why people don't like it.

4251799
Knowing this makes me like her even more. :)

4251437 Maybe because it was a lot of fun and had probably the most consistent song quality of any musical episode so far?

4251932
4252145

Because "a Christmas Carol" has been told a million times before and been a musical at least a thousand times before, it didn't even do anything new

Also, I'm still hoping that Jeff Williams and Casey Lee Williams to make an epic song for MLP

I'm in the camp of "crossover with pony = new content". I apparently haven't seen A Christmas Carol to death like everyone else in the fandom, either. >.>

4252597 That statement can apply to 95% of MLP episodes.

So great. Twilight is a lot more fun when she's Bookhorsing instead of Princesshorsing. RD made a good counterpoint to Sky Stinger in that she's really full of herself (and wants others to succeed, even if she wants to prove she's better too), but consistently put in the work on the flying side of things. Vapor Trail really was adorable, and seeing her develop independent ambition was great. Sky Stinger himself I think benefited from not having all of the focus on him, as was the case with Zephyr Breeze. On the whole, I thought his part was the weakest, and it's easier to see how Vapor Trail goes from where she was to passing the individual trial than him, but it all worked together.

It's funny that a week after lying is bad, mmmmkay? we get repeated assertions that it's vitally important to hide the truth from people.

Oh, and I love watching Spitfire love her job.
